Ted Roof to Ga Tech...?

  • Roof isn't a major lose IMO. He did a solid job in year one but I don't expect this to hurt us defensively. The biggest plus to Roof was his recruiting ties in the south. As long as we keep the rest of the staff intact we are in good shape. Is it confirmed Ethridge is the guy to take over for Butler?

  • Long as recruits don't jump and players we are ok.... Will Roof recruit our team?

i highly doubt he would stoop that low to OB

Maybe if we had a different HC. But I HIGHLY doubt he does that to O'Brien.

    no, complete speculation.

They both get paid more than twice what Butler gets. The title is mostly insignificant. LJ and Vandy always had final say on their schemes under Scrap...which was an unpopular point with Roof. The scraps between Roof and Vandy over recruits & personnel weren't imaginary either. I won't lose sleep over this.

Butler’s quick promotion leads me to think this had been in the works for some time, although there are no indications that Roof was being forced out. There has been some question as to why Butler was promoted over Larry Johnson Sr. or Ron Vanderlinden. However, both coaches reportedly made it known last winter during the hiring process for O’Briens staff that they were not interested in an expanded role.

    This is from VBR...

  • Here's the big question: What's Trooper Taylor up to right now?

    ...heh.

It's one heck of a coincidence if this isn't connected to BOB's "power play." He specifically mentioned asst salaries in his press conference. Wonder if Roof was a specific example of an asst he thought might leave if PSU didn't pay him more.

    BINGO!!!!!!!!

Connect the dots. Roof gets an offer, talks to BOB, who goes to AD......sorry BOB, no more $$$. BOB gets pissed and contacts NFL teams via agent, stuff happens. Now Roof is leaving within a couple of days? Wouldn't be surprised to see one or more. Also, think Roof recruits the "commits" from down yonder???? I do.

I doubt Roof is getting much of a raise at GT. Its his alma mater and he loves the South, I'm sure that had more to do with it.

  • I'm with diddy. Not really going to lose sleep over it. He did well as our DC overall, but IMO there were some questions about his evaluation of recruits, not to mention the rumored spats with Vanderlinden.

The loss of southern ties does hurt, but in the end, not sure I see it hurting as much as losing some of the other coaches would.

  • Roof was the right guy for last year ... keep things going and don't get in the way of an already good system. But, I don't believe Roof is a guy who can build on a system or take it to new levels. Butler may be that kind of coach. We'll see.

  • Roof was the main reason we lost to Ohio and most people wanted him to get fired at that point. Now they are upset and blaming Joyner.

Give me Jordan Hill, our LBs, Vandy, and LJ...I'll do OK running a D. The man was supposed to be heralded for his aggression and blitz schemes. Yet, I saw little improvement in the pass rush and our 2011 strengths remained 2012 strengths. As the year went along, I do think we got much better production from the secondary considering the level of talent there. Hopefully, that was a reflection of Butler.

Ultimately, Roof got a shot to go back to his alma mater and home state. How long did we expect a southern nomad to hang around anyways? Not surprising or disappointing. I don't think that there is any financial conspiracy around this whatsoever. It's common sense.

I'm more worried about play calling than I am Butler's ability or potential.

We were going to struggle regardless, and a first year DC won't help us gel much sooner.

Zac denied it on his twitter... Said he had that status since the beginning. He's a GA, but does coach the DBs the most I guess...

Yeah, that's my main concern... Playcalling is a skill... Learned over time... This will be Butler's first year at it.... Concerning to say the least. But I love his hunger and his preparation from what I hear. I just hope he can learn on the job very quickly...

Eh. Beating up inferior opponents is not gonna really help him learn. But it could give our guys confidence...

I'd like to know how involved he was in last year's defense.

Preparation is great, but guys like Hoke and Meyer are good because they make great in-game adjustments. Hopefully he's a fast learner. Our offense should be able to keep us afloat for a while, but I'd be a lot more comfortable with an experienced DC, even if that DC was Ted Roof.

  • Hoke doesn't even wear a headset 80% of the time. I doubt he's drawing up any great in-game adjustments. If he is, I haven't really seen them in Michigan's games.

Coaches can still see things and make adjustments, even if they're not calling plays.
