Ted Roof to Ga Tech...?

  • Sean Fitz ‏@seanfitz247
Ted Roof obviously tired of being mistaken for Graham Spanier.

    Good one Sean, lol.

  • Agreed. Thought the same thing. For our situation now I'd take the elite coach in Hixon but under normal circumstances I would take Engram.

Would you trade Stan Hixon for Engram? IDK... I like them both.

Hixon to OC and Engram to WR coach?

  • I'm not upset by this at all. I think losing Roof's southern ties will hurt a bit but hopefully he was able to hand off some of those relationships to other staff members in the last year. I'm sure BOB knew Roof wouldn't stay long. His hiring seemed like a major favor to BOB to help him get his feet wet as a head coach. I love Butler and this will ensure that we use these next few years of sanctions to cut the teeth of a new DC. He's young, smart and fiery and he did a good job coaching up a very overwhelmed group in last years secondary. I'm excited by this.

No, not straight up. I love Hixon and his recruiting ability.

Whatever Bobby puts his mind to he'd do well.

    John Butler the new DC

Wow. BOB has made it pretty clear that Vandy or LJ will never get the DC job here.

Nothing against JB, but how much more qualified are LJ and Vandy than him? I guess it makes sense because Butler is BOB's guy, but I'm not sure I'm a big fan.

As crtical as I was of Roof, I think we take a bigger step back defensively next season than we would have otherwise. He's very, very young.

  • Didn't Roof bail on UCF before accepting the job here? He did well, but it doesn't look like he likes to stay too long ...

It's one heck of a coincidence if this isn't connected to BOB's "power play." He specifically mentioned asst salaries in his press conference. Wonder if Roof was a specific example of an asst he thought might leave if PSU didn't pay him more.

Bob also mentioned that his coordinators need a chance to "move up." Interesting.....

  • This sucks! Roof did awesome with limited depth, 5 DB's etc. Just hope we keep the same philosophy on D.

  • I don't mind the loss of Roof.....he did ok...nothing special. However, I am concerned about LJ and Vandy, as long as they are happy then all is well...because i kind of like Butler. Hopefully Butler is as impressive a coordinator as he is a sideline guy!

Hixon has a much better coaching resume, but Engram seems like a beast at recruiting and I believe he would make a great WR coach too. It would also be nice to take Pitt's only recruiter.

  • Our lack of a nickel package was ridiculous at times. Way too much blitzing early in the season. I'm guessing Bob saw enough in meetings that JB was saying the right things, maybe challending teddy at times.

I like Butler but I would be pissed if I was LJ or Vandy. Hopefully they don't leave. I wonder why they were passed over?

They both get paid more than twice what Butler gets. The title is mostly insignificant. LJ and Vandy always had final say on their schemes under Scrap...which was an unpopular point with Roof. The scraps between Roof and Vandy over recruits & personnel weren't imaginary either. I won't lose sleep over this.

  • Millerlatte,

Does this have anything to do with assistants being fairly compensated. Which obrien even eluded to in his presser?

  • Most of the entire coaching staff that I coach with attended the PSU coaches clinic this past year. EVERY one of the coaches that spent anytime listening to Butler was extremely impressed and felt he was gonna be a big time coach.

Not at all worried about Butler as DC.

I agree diddy, while the on the field results were mostly good with Roof I don't think he particularly meshed well with Vandy and LJ. I think Roof might also be alittle butt hurt that neither LJ nor Vandy left after the year because Roof really couldn't assemble his own staff and may not have wanted LJ and Vandy on it. Personally I'd take LJ and Vandy over any DC. Just conspiracy theories though.

I am not too worried about JB IF we can keep Vandy and LJ. I think they could be huge in JBs development as a D-coordinator.

  • Jeez...just saw in Jeff's story that this is Roof's 6th job since 2007!! That's crazy. Makes me think the guy rubs people the wrong way or has some issues fitting in???

would have been interesting to see what he would/could do without Mauti, Hodges, and Hill.

No, a much as I like Engram I take the guy with NFL coaching experience over the guy that is just starting his coaching career. Regardless of the PSU ties.

I'd imagine Butler is gonna get a nice pay raise now that he's the DC, even if it's not this year.

If he's the coach people are saying he is we will have to pay him like that eventually.

    Yep.

I'd happily take Engram as a WR coach though.
