Ted Roof new PSU DC?

  • Hamilton Lion said...

Auburn won the NC because of offense, not defense. If Auburn didn't buy Newton, it wins four games. The defense wasn't good. He has one or two good players on that defense. We don't have a Nick Fairley to bail him out.

I think a lot of people would disagree with your assertion that Auburn's defense shutting down (holding them to less than 20) Oregon's high octane offense in the National Championship game. The offense was excellent and Cam was unreal... but to say that the defense had nothing to do with the Championship and the season would be to sell the players and coaches a bit short.

Our soft zone... keep everything in front of you defenses under Bradley were excellent statistically. But consider that we weren't exactly playing offensive juggernauts... When was the last time PSU held an offense the caliber of Oregon's (2010) under 20 points?

Getting to the QB and making stops in the backfield isn't impressive if the opponent still puts points on the scoreboard, and AU had the #53 scoring defense in 2010 and #78 this year. If BOB is hiring Roof, I just home he makes LJ or Vandy the DC and lets Roof coach DBs.

You are right. But for the past few years we have heard that a more agressive defense is what we need to play with the USC's and Houstons and Wisconsins of the world. Well being in the backfield helps with pressuring QB's into bad decsions, Turnovers, and helps your DB's s if they all alone on an island playing man-to-man. His stats as a scoring Defense were not that good... But most would argue that Offenses and Offensive skill players in the SEC might be a little better than the Big Ten at this moment. The reason our numbers have been so good is because we have been facing pretty weak offenses for a while now.

This whole coaching change is about new direction... I am not adverse to a Ted Roof led defense with Vandy and LJ coaching up the front 7.

Thanks, Trock. I'm with 12 - would be nice to have a guy who is either a really good coach, really good recruiter, or both. Just from comments made around here, seems like he's below average in both.

But as others said, I'm willing to give him a chance with two of the best position coaches around.

  • Oh, I get it -- we can just ignore statistics because "most would argue the SEC has better offenses" without actually offering hard evidence. Well, I guess we are also ignoring the stats on turnovers then, because Roof's supposedly more aggressive defenses were no better at forcing TO's than PSU over the past 2 seasons (better in 2010, worse in 2011), and Auburn got a few more sacks over that period only because PSU's pass rush was unusually weak in 2010.

Yeah, a new direction is good if it is an improvement, but it looks to me Roof would bring the same kind of new direction that Michigan got on defense under DickRod. No thanks.

what better options are out there for us to fill in relatively short time? No one is saying Roof is perfect, far from it. However, he has had success in the past and has had some good defenses. Let's not act like that Auburn team was built to be a defensive team in the first place, they sold out for an offensive team and filled the defense in with young guys and JUCO's. I'm willing to give the guy a chance and hope he reverts back to old form. Hopefully he gets after it a little hard recruiting though.

Who is ignoring statistics? Most people are wary of hiring Roof. Honestly, though, it's the first truly subpar hire I've seen so far on the staff. Would have preferred it not be for a coordinator position, but so be it.

I think a lot of people are hoping that players developed under LJ Sr. and Vanderlinden can execute Roof's defenses better than his previous players, including ones at Auburn. Honestly, who did Auburn have on D besides Fairley? I don't remember anyone else and I don't know that any of them are real legit NFL prospects. I'm sure some Auburn fans can come on and correct me. Just saying that I watched that MNC and don't specifically remember any real great defensive players.

  • I have to admit I really didn't recall what Roof looked like. So I decided to do a search. Is it just me, or does this guy really resemble a younger Graham Spanier? Or Ernie Els, but for our purposes Graham.

  • We'll have to see how he does. UCF finished 9th overall in total defense this year and PSU finished 20th. It doesn't mean much of anything due to the leagues, but the BT isn't exactly a great offensive league to begin with.

Kevin Gilbride from the New York Giants agree was probably sad to see him go. Woops... there goes Hakeem Nicks catching an underneath crossing pattern and taking it to the house through the middle of that defense.

  • Look through Auburn's 2010 to 2011 stats and you will find that the defense played very similar to the previous year after losing one of the best DT's in the country while the offense collapsed post Newton. Auburn's offense had 2600 fewer yards, 15.5 fewer points per game and 18% lower 3rd down conversion rate. When your offense is inept your defense is going to be on the field a lot more and look worse than it is (remind you of the season we just finished up?). Their defense only gave up 4 more points per game this last season.

That being said, while I would like a more aggressive defense I don't like that this guy has jumped from place to place as DC. Lasted 1 day at Louisville and 28 at UCF and 1 season at Minnesota (he helped them a lot it seems)? LJ and Vandy should feel slighted by this hire.

I'm an Auburn guy with PSU grad relatives. I just read that 247 Sports is reporting that Ted Roof will be the new PSU DC. That's abit shocing to me since Roof just 'resigned' under pressure at Auburn and took the DC job at UCF. Don't get me wrong, Roof is a nice guy but his defenses at Auburn wasn't anything to brag about? I don't thnk he is in the same league as Tom Bradley.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Wow Proud Tiger, that just made my stomach flop. All I can hope for is the best. Maybe teamed up with other assistants he will flourish???
