Ted Roof new PSU DC?

I'm an Auburn guy with PSU grad relatives. I just read that 247 Sports is reporting that Ted Roof will be the new PSU DC. That's abit shocing to me since Roof just "resigned" under pressure at Auburn and took the DC job at UCF. Don't get me wrong, Roof is a nice guy but his defenses at Auburn wasn't anything to brag about? I don't thnk he is in the same league as Tom Bradley.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I've heard Ted Roof's name mentioned about our DC job but personally I hope Ron Vanderlinden or Larry Johnson is appointed that title. We will see though.

Since I'm not a paying member of your board, I can't read your VIP responses That's OK, I was just sharing some info FWIW. As another point of interest, I understand O'Brien and Roof were OC and DC at Duke at the same time and have remained friends.

His defenses at au was horrible. He was told to find another job and did so before being fired at auburn. Wish you guys the best of luck.

PSUTimm....He was our DC. He was LB coach at Ga Tech before that. He and O'Brien were on the GT staff together as well as at Duke so their connection goes back a ways.

Where is 247 reporting this? I seen it mentioned on the Auburn board that 247 was reporting this, but I have yet to find any source or website on 247 reporting to Ted Roof is going to join PSU's coaching staff. He has previously been mentioned here as having connections to BOB, but I haven't seen anything close to definite.

I got that, was wondering if he focused on a position. Tom Bradley was our DC and coached the secondary.

is BOB going to hire everyone that he had ties with at either Duke or GT? Not sure i like this pattern...

Even in the NC season, his defense wasn't very good. Cam Newton won the NC...simple as that.

Auburn won the NC because of offense, not defense. If Auburn didn't buy Newton, it wins four games. The defense wasn't good. He has one or two good players on that defense. We don't have a Nick Fairley to bail him out.

Getting to the QB and making stops in the backfield isn't impressive if the opponent still puts points on the scoreboard, and AU had the #53 scoring defense in 2010 and #78 this year. If BOB is hiring Roof, I just home he makes LJ or Vandy the DC and lets Roof coach DBs.

Somehow I am becoming a Roof apologist...
I know the cumulative stats in 2010 still were not pretty... but when looking over the schedule.
They gave up 43pts to a pretty good Arkansas team, certainly not anything to brag about... and 31 to Ole Miss and Georgia... All 3 teams probably better than 11 teams on our schedule next year.
On the bright side in 2010, in the national title game, against a high scoring, high flying Oregon team Auburn held to 17 pts... after a first half debacle against Alabama in the Iron Bowl, they shut them out the 2nd half to win 28-27... again, held South Carolina to 17 in the SEC title game... and also held LSU to 17.
Certainly had a few clunkers in there, but in the National title game and SEC title game, they gave up a combined 34pts v Oregon and South Carolina
Also, though not terribly relevant , but in his one season in the Big Ten at Minnesota, that defense improved dramatically in all area's of national rankings.

Cam Newton was amazing that whole year. But Auburn held Oregon to 19 points in the BCS Championship game. Their defense shut down an Alabama team that jumped out to an early lead so that Cam could bring them back in the Iron Bowl. They had a top 10 rushing defense.
They were horrible last year... but they were also very young.
I am not saying that Ted Roof is a great hire. I am saying with coaches like LJ and Vandy behind him, Ted Roof can be successful here. He preaches physicality and agressiveness... something our defenses as a whole have lacked for some time now. Again he was hired by Chizick, rehired by George O'Leary... It's not as though he is homeless standing on the corner begging for work.
I am giving Bill O'Brien the benefit of the doubt.
