  • I have to think that he calls to set up a visit in 5-4-3-2....

UNC football players flocked to suspect class - North Carolina - NewsObserver.com

Julius Nyangoro promised to teach a class that would meet daily. Instead, it was set up for independent study, requiring only a paper. Eighteen football players signed up.

  • Wow, what an embarrassment. UNC is a proud and prestigious academic institution but ever since they desired to have a powerhouse football program and bring in a guy like Butch Davis, its backfired in their face.

  • "The new information is more evidence that student athletes, particularly football players, were being steered to classes that university officials now say are evidence of academic fraud because there was little or no instruction. An internal review found 54 such classes ...."

I say death penalty, since that punishment is thrown around so loosely these days.

  • This happens all over the place to some degree. UNC isn't helping their own cause though with this potentially being HUGE news against the University.

no...this doesn't happen all over the place lol made- up classes with no instruction consisting of only football players as students?? yeah, don't think your finding that anywhere else.

Well, maybe not to that extreme but you can't deny that college football as a whole and making the football players eligible for the season calls for extreme measures.

yes...usually putting players in classes such as basket-weaving or something of that sort....but those classes also have other students enrolled in them as well and actually have teachers...not this crap.

  • Jeez, that's bad. Combine this with the benefits players were gettIng under Butch Davis and you might as well call them professional athletes.
Sadly UNC takes another step closer to a LOIC charge

Logic would say yes it will effect recruiting, BUT look at USC. The issues around their program haven't slowed down recruiting one bit.

But thats USC; USC will always recruit well with a coach there putting in te effort because its USC.

    UNC is no USC.

If he wants to visit we need to advise him the cost of a game ticket and most state college hotels require a 2 night stay on game weekends. He made his bed... if I am BOB I tell him no way- there are better recruits out there. I have a hard time wishing this kid well with the way he handled recruiting process. I get hes 17 he has a bit of an exscuse but the people around him were cheesey at best and wouldnt let the kid make a decision of his own they didnt like. He played Psu both privately and publicly with the twitter talk about being at psu with the other commits then blowing it off and letting his hs coach do the dirty work....sometimes its not whst you do but how you do it....But Psu staff has stayed the course and has really worked hard this spring in recruiting and the results are starting to show without Switzer. He came off like he was going to be 1st of many to abandon State over a non football issue and at the end of the day his posse led him to a situation thst may be as toxic if not more so.

  • I really like switzer and if he wants to visit again I hope BOB would allow it and make room

    PSU2525517

  • Switzer made this decision based off of his family, not because he truly wanted to be a Tar Heel. He isnt a Penn State type of guy after the way he handled the whole recruiting process. BOB has shown that he can get a replacement and he did in Will Fuller (who will probably be a lot better than Switzer anyway). We dont need him, but if he decides to schedule a visit to PSU after all of this I wont be upset, just wont respect the guy. I sort of feel the same exact way about Alex Anzalone.

    UNC is no USC.

I agree that the stature of the 2 programs don't compare. But my point is that it seems that there has been zero negative effect on USC with recruits due to the issues and sanctions. I just find that hard to believe but it's true. It surprises me that kids/parents don't look at what happened and say "I don't want my kid to be part of that", even if that group of kids/parents are a minority of the recruiting pool. One would think that if hypothetically 30% of the recruit pool decided that they didn't want to be part of a program in trouble that the total committed class would have at least a small drop off.

Part of what? The AD is gone. The coach is gone. They lost guys on the depth chart because of it and the sanctons are almost up. Not to mention it is USC and these kids grew up in their dynasty and many of their parents remember the USC of old. The kids no will never really see those sanctions, so it doesn't matter.

Unless I'm mistaken, USC's issues have to do with Bush receiving illegal benefits from agents not associated with the university. That is completely different than academic fraud involving the faculty and multiple student-athletes. Apples and oranges

All valid points, wholesale change in the program for leadership. The USC history in college football is a storied history. But no accounting for the stigma of what the program brought upon itself? I guess not. To me this is a good example of the memory of a gnat our general public has. They cheated to build that dynasty and all folks seem to remember are the wins. To me that is sad.

Pretty funny to me, actually. Most schools, even PSU, have majors or classes that are known to be easier than others, and some students are encouraged to enroll in those. However making a class solely for football players to achieve credits, not requiring any time whatsoever other than the two weeks before the end of the semester, is a joke. Wow. I mean, how stupid can you be?
