Support the New Coach

  • No matter whom the new coach is going to be we need to give him a fair chance. There are numerous examples of perceived homerun hires that failed and unknown or perceived terrible hires that have excelled. The last thing we need is to give the press another chance to smear Penn State. Just imagine what they would do with a video similar to Chizik's welcome at Auburn or Eagles fan booing McNabb at the NFL Draft. Whoever takes the job is taking on a difficult task not just because of the Sandusky crap but also because he is replacing a legend. He will need the support of the fan base. If after a couple of years it is clear he cannot get the job done then we can turn but at least let’s see what he can do before we judge. Remember that JoePa was judged and hung before all the facts were known, let’s not do that to our new coach.

  • If it's O'Brien, I'm not sure I can do that...

    Well, maybe in 6 months.

  • Hopefully we won't need to petition support for the next coach.

  • bono you really are starting to sound like philafan.

Anyway im hoping that assuming it is a mediocre (suicide) type hire that we can all take it for what it is and go back to just hoping for the best season after season and pray that we can be better than mediocre! Remember we all just thought we were mediocre before so who knows i mean clements and obrien are offensive guys at the worst it will CHANGE our HORRID offense as is. Lets just pray they salvage the D

Oh yeah. I'm all in on the philafan crack today. But only because of this O'Brien nonsense.

well ... as a PSU fan for over 45 years I will support the new coach whomever it is. In the end PSU is and will continue to be my team and my school. I have no choice but to continue to follow and cheer them and the new coach on.

  • I agree with the general premise of your post, and I am trying to keep an open mind about whoever becomes the HC.

    But...

Considering the circumstances of the past two months, coupled with replacing Joe frickin Paterno, coupled with the extremely dramatic search process...

PSU needs someone who can be immediately perceived as a successful hire. The whole university needs a morale lift. It needs it badly. We need one, just one, leader to emerge from this mess who the heavy majority of the fan base can support without a 2-3 year proving ground process. A hire widely perceived as underwhelming will be a damning nail in our coffin. People are teetering, simmering, and barely restraining themselves from jumping out of the boat. The ONLY solace that many fans still possess for the program is...'But we will land a big fish.' If that doesn't happen, the non-football aspects of the program are in deep trouble for a few years. People will jump off quickly, and it will take a little longer to get them to climb back on...especially with their wallets while their dollars are quickly spent elsewhere.

  • This video made me laugh back when Auburn hired Gene Chizik, but I think it shows not to make judgement until you see what the new coach can do.

Auburn Fans heckle Jay Jacobs over decision to hire Gene Chizik

5-19 at Iowa State. Someone at Auburn better have a crystal ball.

I think he's a garbage hire and got luck with an amazing player. I don't expect ANY long term success from the guy.

Pat, I do find the Chizik example a little misplaced. The guy had no track record for success prior to Auburn, and outside a one year anomaly highlighting a $200,000 player, he's had two 8-5 seasons at Auburn. Color me unimpressed.

Again, if Auburn didn't buy Cam Newton or his father, Gene Chidzik is spoken in the same breath as Randy Edsall right now.

Totally agree... the Auburn ship seems to be sinking. Malzahn leaves for Ark State, then Michael Dyer is rumored to be leaving for Ark State also. Then Ted Roof leaves for UCF... people seem to be bailing. Sometimes you just know a bad hire, not saying that occasionally perceived bad hired turn out to be wrong but I can think of ALOT more where the perceived bad hire was a bad hire, Ron Zook, Derrick Dooley, Randy Edsel just to name a few. I'll give whoever a chance but it will be a very half hearted chance if I don't think the hire is good.

  • I don’t disagree with anything said above and only used the Chizik example because it makes the fans look bad and I don’t want the media to spin it into another negative story against Penn State. We don’t need any more self inflicted wounds. I am really hoping for a homerun hire but it may be too much to ask for right now with everything that has happened.

Well said. If it is O Brien I almost feel sorry for him ahead of time. He will have to knock it out of the park very early on and have a huge PR cloud to overcome that I highy doubt his name alone can do. I think kids can look past the scandal and realize it was one guy if the new HC has a NAME that is recognized. There could be exceptions to the rule in terms of recruiting, but his battle would be uphill to say the least. Not to mention the timing of the hire...it would be a total head scratcher IMO.

Exactly. If it is O'Brien, Clements, Rowan, etc...a healthy portion of the fanbase will be out for his head from Day 1. There are enough internal and external challenges of this gig. An outraged fan base withdrawing significant financial support from the program will make their role nearly impossible.

I think the heavy donors will continue to support and be a little bit more reasonable when it comes to giving the new guy a chance.

As for the several thousand people that go to one game a year I imagine their support will fall off until the team starts to win again.

At the end of the day it is still Penn State and when August rolls around people will be ready for college football and we all (most of us) will be saying we can win it all this year with good OL/QB play.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

  • More blind loyalty, ya, that's exactly what this fanbase needs.

  • Replacing the Legend is more like chasing his ghost. The Legend of the 70's-80's-90's was long gone. Surely his standards for student athlete performance in the classroom stayed high, but the lowering of expectations, and the diminishing returns on the field, have made the job easier for the next guy.

My expectations have been lowered for some time. A new coach only raises my hopes for the future, no matter who it is (within reason). I for one will measure his success against the PSU teams of the 2000's. Part-time contender for the Big Ten title. Never a serious contender for the national title. If he maintains us at that level, it will be disappointing, but not unprecedented. If he can pick up the program and return it to national significance, awesome.

The bar is lower now guys. That was the legacy of the past dozen years.

Edsall was a great hire. It's not his fault that Fridge recruited a bunch of lazy thugs who quit when Edsall yelled at them to go to class. Maryland will be a decent team after a few more years.

Difference is...the program needs the $$$ from a lot of people willing to travel 3+ hours every week to watch games. People watching on TV and discussing on message boards doesn't help their bottom line. When not competitive, many kept doing it out of their love for Joe. With Joe gone, how many will keep doing for an unknown HC going through growing pains? If the process had been addressed differently, I think more people would give the benefit of the doubt. But again, after two months of secrecy at the heels of the largest scandal in University history, it's put up or shut up time for PSU. IMO, this decision is their final chance to save a lot $$$ from retreating.

Cant we say the same for the guy out in Columbus now?

As much as I'd like to...can't bring myself to say that. He's had success at multiple places - Chizik has just had one year of success.
