Successful route/river crossing thread

What do you mean no way? It's gonna rain more today and tomorrow and now the tributaries are swelling again. I sure hope it doesn't get closed, but it's certainly not out of the question. The other thing is parts of 11-15 are going to flood shortly.

At street level on Front Street, the water is at 20+ feet when it begins to flood by the bridge. The George Wade is an additional 14+ feet above the ground. I don't see the river getting that high, especially there were the river is over one mile wide which is 1000 feet wider than it is downtown. I could be wrong, but I don't think it will close.

  • They're predicting 28+feet so that'd put it within 6 feet If I'm understanding all of this correctly. Not sure how close they'd let the water rise until they closed the bridge. Hopefully nothing worsens ie levies or dams giving way, and they should be okay.

  • There are three bridges open across the Susquehanna at Harrisburg. Harvey Taylor will likely close tomorrow, but it's open right now. Wade and the Pike and 83 will remIl open as they are high enough.

  • Just did the 81N to 15/11 up the west shore to 322 at Duncannon. Crossed over the river at about 9:30 PM.

No problems whatsoever other than the number of RVs here at the Seven Mountains Campground with Alabama plates. Lady at the front desk said she had never seen so many visitor RVs.

This way should be fine tomorrow due to the elevation of the 11/15 on the West Shore. There will be traffic if 322 is still closed on the East Shore.

Make it here people!! We need the Whitehouse to be rocking on Saturday!

So you actually made it over the river on 322?

  • Just updated this in the other thread...the PA Turnpike is CLOSED BOTH DIRECTIONS between READING and HARRISBURG EAST. The Bridge over the Susquehanna is still open, but there's a 40 mile stretch which is currently shut down. Traffic is being re-routed through Reading via 222, 61, 78, and 81. 222 South is also closed heading toward Lancaster, so the more direct route of 222, 30, and 283 is not available.

That's a promising report. I'll wait to see how things hold up once the Susquehanna crests early Saturday morning before making the call to head up that way. I still think I'm ultimately going to head up the safer route and not even bother with any of the major interstates along the river.

The George Wade(81), south(83) and Turnpike bridges (or route 30) WILL NOT be closed. If any of them are overtaken by flood waters, then you better know somebody named Noah. Just not gonna happen. Everything (close to Harrisburg) except the Susquehanna is cresting early Friday morning and will start dropping. Get to the TP at Harrisburg east or west and head to I99. Forget about 322 west of Clarks Ferry, that'll be closed till Sunday or Monday.

  • Yes but I came up the west shore of the river on 11/15. 322 is closed south of where 11/15 intersects 322. Once you hit 322 from 11/15, smooth sailing.

The west shore is a good 50 feet above the river between 81 and 322. The only problem tomorrow will be traffic because this is the best way to go. It is really the only way unless you traverse the mountain passes or go 2 hours out of your way.

NittanyBill...what is the deal with that 11/15 stretch? Red lights? Just a slow 2 lane road?

Sure am but we will probably head to the stadium tomorrow around lunch time so will just miss you. I will PM you if we change our plans.

Good luck getting up here. Hope it is smooth sailing.

When you exit from 81, it starts out 2 lanes for a bit then goes to one but generally moves quickly. Goes back to two just before you cross over the river to get on 322.

You go through a small town or two. I only recall one light but could be two lights max.

Best part is you are well above the river. The bridge is very high. It is one of those bridges I tend to not look down from the RV.

  • PA Turnpike has reopened from Harrisburg East to Reading exits. Road was closed due to a compromised bridge b/c of the flooding.

  • 80 and 76 are now open as well as 81 to 11/15 to 322. There's no reason most people shouldn't make it to this game. I can't wait!!

If 81 to 11/15 to 322 turns out to holds steady and there isn't any major problems with those routes, I'm planning on taking that route up to the game.
