Successful route/river crossing thread

  • Since some people are probably making the journey today, thought it might be a good idea to get a thread going. If you were able to get to SC from the east, tell us how you did it. I hope to make a post tomorrow afternoon/evening. Be safe.........

  • +1 Great thread! If you have tickets, you GOTTA get there! We need the Whitehouse to be at record setting capacity!

Correct. Many rivers will not crest until tomorrow into Saturday. What is passable today may not be passable tomorrow or Saturday.

Unfortunately, the Turnpike Bridge may be the best bet for anyone making the trek to Happy Valley. If that thing gets water on it, the entire south central part of the state is in HUGE trouble. Since it's been completed, they raised it quite a bit, which is good for those making the trip this weekend. All other routes seem to be closed off or will be in due time.

I would advise to leave plenty plenty early in that case, since the turnpike will likely be HEAVILY populated with cars.

  • I would think 81 would be ok across the Susquehanna as it is raised. If so, you can take 81 to Carlisle, get off at E. High St and then take 74 then 75 Port Royal. You can get on 322 there or take the back way to Lewistown on 333. That is if 322 is flooded on the East Shore and 11/15 is flooded on the West Shore.

    That's the plan.

I've seen this mentioned a few times now. So there's no water that could impede travel on 74/75 before you get to 322?

  • Don't want to be a buzzkill here, but things in central PA are really f-ed up right now. Roads are buckling, towns are submerged, and it appears bridges will be swept away based on pictures coming in. The Susquhanna River is expected to peak on Saturday at a level that is only one foot below its highest recorded level ever. Seriously, stay safe and don't take chances. If it means staying home, then stay home and watch the game on tv. Some risks are not worth taking. If you *can* get to the game, cheer extra loud of those that will not be able to make it.

  • Wrong answer, get to the game.

Leave early, tonight if necessary...sleep in your car, pitch a tent in Paternoville, do whatever you have to do and get there before things get worse. Tomorrow is a perfect day to call out sick. We need everyone at this game.

All the bridges are closed, so if you're on the East Shore there is no taking any bridge to get across the Susquehanna.

I thought the turnpike as well as the 81 bridge across would assuredly be fine. If my memory serves me right the 81 bridge across the susquehanna is a good 50 feet above the water (on normal occasions)

George Wade Bridge (81) is open, but you can not get on or off at Front St. due to flooding.

Must've misheard that. I wouldn't be surprised if the GW gets shut off at some soon in the next 24 hours.

Yeah, I agree. I was down along Front St. this morning and took some pics of the rising water. No way that bridge stays open through all this. Only bridge around here that is likely to stay open is the Turnpike bridge.

  • Harrisburg is already evacuating up to 3rd street.

  • So if I go 78 to 76 to 99, will that still work?

  • I made it from State College to Exton, PA today.
Best man in a freakin' wedding.

Regardless I took rt 322 to rt 11/15 TO I81 and had no issue. Traffic was slow northbound but not stopped.

Was a 10 minute detour. Got here in 3 hours.

I81 will not flood and neither will the turnpike.

So you had to cross the Susquehanna right? So it is possible. Just as long as there is no more major rain, there is a way!

There is no way the water reaches the George Wade. It should stay open.

  • What do you mean no way? It's gonna rain more today and tomorrow and now the tributaries are swelling again. I sure hope it doesn't get closed, but it's certainly not out of the question. The other thing is parts of 11-15 are going to flood shortly.

Yup. And the 10 minutes on route 11/15 I was nowhere close to being able to be flooded.
