What does it matter if she's smart or not? Double D's and Pretty face are all I care about...

Heres the Virginia drive he had:

Thanks for posting. First time I had seen those as I missed the second quarter of that game. Gotta say, that was encouraging - good mobility, decent pocket presence, and that should-have-been a td pass was thrown right on the money while on the move. I've liked Steven from the beginning, rooting for him to win the job.

On another note, how frustrating is that Virginia game, still? Robinson had that td in his hands and dropped it - four weeks later that's a catch. All the fg's - just stunning that was a loss.

Well, we went from 1 returning QB to 4. Gotta love BO'B. He nailed the QB depth issue this year with a #1 5-star recruit, a 3-start JUCO, a returning 3-star redshirt Frosh and a "run-on".

2 run-ons, both just enrolled, so bob will have a 4-deep to work with this spring..

I think lost in Coach O'Briens interview with Jones was his praise for Seven Bench. I know most PSU fans are excited about Hackenberg and Ferguson but don't forget about Bench. He has a good arm, wheels and is reported to be smart. I wouldn't be surprised to see him as the starter next year.

Seems to have some good leadership qualities as well.

This is the wildcard, IMO. Which is why I think Hack redshirts this year. That means the competition is really between Bench and Ferguson. Bench has the advantage of being in OBs system for a year. And Ferguson has the advantage of starting QB experience at the next level.

I'll be following the QB competition this year from Spring training thru the regular season. I truly believe though that OB wants to redshirt as many freshmen as he can including AB and Hack!

Is it a given that Ferguson won't redshirt? Doesn't he have four years to play three years, and aren't the scouting reports that he is a bit raw?

Unless Bench (assuming he starts) takes every snap or one of the two walkons step up to take the backup spot. I think it would be pretty difficult to RS both Hack and Ferguson next year.

However there is a possibility that Hack gets the RS in 2013 and if Ferguson is number 3 going into 2014 - he could RS that season.

Good point. That would make sense.

I don't think anything is given at this point. I think OB had one scholarship QB heading into spring practice and had a top recruit planned to join the team this summer so he went out and got the most talented guys he could that were immediately available. We needed bodies plain and simple. Where the chips fall from here is anyone's guess.

Personally, I really hope that Hack can redshirt because true freshman QBs usually don't fare well in college football, even the better one. That would put Bench and Ferg as the 2 guys that need to be ready to play. Either way, 2 guys are going to play this year (hopefully not 3) and my money is on Ferguson being one of those 2.

It's true that Ferguson could RS in 2014 if Hack beats him out, but if that were to happen, I can see him transferring. He's got his RS year to sit anyway and 2 years to play. That depends on him though and what he would want.

I remember him doing well, all things considered. Love his mobility, nice live arm, seems to have that QB leader gene. Of course things were probably running 1000mph as he was thrown into legitimate action his 2nd collegiate game ever. Get more reps with the 1st team and some game experience and I think we have a strong QB for the following 3 years (and beyond with Hack).

But yea, he should have 1TD right now, but I am not worried as I expect him to win the starting job and have plenty more. I'm pulling for Bench to start, Ferguson to back up, and Hack to redshirt.

Yup, Robinson would've made that catch a few weeks later. Hell, he made catches that looked much harder than that one (Indiana comes to mind).

I also think Bench had several accurate passes besides that one dropped as well. It's a great problem we have at QB right now, especially compared to this time last season. I just remember hoping PJ could learn the playbook so we didn't have to see yet another pick-riddled season from McGloin. That crow sure was delicious, haha.

I really never considered that possibility Cambria! Ya got me athinkin' shrug

Man if Fergie RS and Hack RS, then Bench is the Starter with a couple of run-ons backing him up.

So if Bench starts as a true Soph, he is likely the incumbent for 3 years. Which means that Fergie gets to compete against him for same 3 years.

Hack, if he redshirts has 4 years and if he is second fiddle to Bench/Ferguson means Hack could be a 2-yr starter (RS-JR and RS-SR)

Lot's of possibilities other than these.

The way I see it fold out is like this last season. BO'B starts the the best position QB for the job based on practice performance, precluding any injuries.

This year is especially exciting to see which QB breaks ahead of the pack for the starting job. And I'm lovin' it!

    cheers

This is not the old staff. Just because bench starts next year does not mean he will start for three years. Hack dad wanted him to red shirt and the depth may allow it so Ab and hack would have 4 years to start and 2 bowls

Exactly ... the best player will play. Just because XXX starts next year doesn't mean it is a given he starts the next year.

However, based on how much BOB let the backup play this year, it doesn't seem like there's much opportunity for the second-string guy to pass the incumbent. So, whoever starts next year will have a decided advantage in experience going into 2014.

In fairness, Bench was a true freshman that didn't get on campus until the summer. That was all that was behind McGloin. While I think there was a few games where Bench should have gotten some snaps I'm not sure if that is how OB will handle the QB's in coming years. We shall see.

By the same token, next year, Hack will be a true freshman that won't get on campus until the summer. He'll be behind Bench and/or Ferguson. If he RS's he'll be behind TWO guys in terms of reps and experience. Doesn't lend itself to passing anyone on the depth chart if the two guys ahead of him get all of the reps.

  • I wonder if OB will put in a zone read package for Bench. He did some of it in high school and is a pretty good athlete. If he wins the job I'd like to see some read option and some designed QB runs. IMO he could have some success carrying the ball and it would be something else defenses would have to prepare.

I expect him to strt in the fall, have been high on him for a while.

I agree. I think Ferguson has some work to do on his mechanics, which isn't all his fault since he missed a big year in his development his SR year, but Bench also has more playbook exposure and has some tools of his own.

I'm excited to see what he can do. Hopefully he's as hard of a worker as McGloin is.

They kind of ran a zone read against Virginia (see first play of the video posted on page one). Except the OL didn't leave anyone unblocked so there was no one to read. Second play was one as well.

The play at about the two minute mark was more of a zone read with reading a defender. So yeah, I'd say they'll use that if Bench is the starter.

ZERO chance Hack is a 2 year starter. The kid will start at least 3 years.
