  • I think lost in Coach O'Briens interview with Jones was his praise for Seven Bench. I know most PSU
fans are excited about Hackenberg and Ferguson but don't forget about Bench. He has a good arm, wheels
and is reported to be smart. I wouldn't be surprised to see him as the starter next year.

And add to it that a ton of the team is in frequent communication with him.

He is a twitter all star.

Bench also seems to have some leadership qualities. He is confident, has some charisma and seems to be well liked by the team. I wouldn't be surprised to see him win the job but he is going to get some good competition from Ferg and Hack.

  • I think we'll have two good QB's to choose from this offseason. I'm excited about Bench as well as Ferguson.

  • I think Bench wins the job. Kid will have had a lot more time to learn the playbook and what the coaches want. He is starting so far ahead of the others it will be tough to catch up and I think he is better than most give him credit. JMO.

  • I like Bench a lot too. Hope Hack redshirts and Ferguson push Bench for the starting job. Ferguson was a big get for depth but either should be solid as a starter. Bench may have the edge with a year already in O'brien's system.

Unlike past best will play. So I can see bench winning job this year and hack replacing him after red shirt year

For Bench it's easy to get praise when he and McGloin are the only two D1 qb's on the team... It will be interesting to see how he deals with competing with Hack and Ferguson. Let the best QB win...

  • I have high hopes for Bench also. He's got some really nice tools to work with and I think there's a decent chance he comes with some nice intangibles. His arm is pretty good, he's solid size at 6'2" the one thing mentioned on here is he has pretty good wheels. He's had a good amount of time on this offense and whoever starts will have a fairly easy transition as the early schedule keeps getting easier and easier with Cuse and KSU losing tons of players and their coaches. I think everyone should go to YouTube and watch his junior highlights to watch him as a runner, his senior highlights to see overall rm strength and ability to throw in the run and then his 7 plays against Virginia at least provide a small idea of his arm and running ability. T Te college level.

  • Agree with let the best guy play. Liked the wheels Bench showed vs. UVA and he had a money throw that should have been a TD catch (think it was right before halftime). Hack could be it, too. Pitt used to have their summer camp in my hometown and we used to go to the practices and scrimmages and I remember Danny Marino as a true frosh going against the #1 Pitt D and he just took the offense right down for a TD in his first scrimmage action....and the rest was history. Think he displaced Rick Trocano as the starter after that.

  • By the way isn't it great to be what feels like a million miles away from the Bolden, Newsome, or McG quagmire? All due props to 2012 McG.

  • Well, we went from 1 returning QB to 4. Gotta love BO'B. He nailed the QB depth issue this year with a #1 5-star recruit, a 3-start JUCO, a returning 3-star redshirt Frosh and a "run-on".

I think we'll be sound at QB. I'd like to see Hack RS, but he may be too good to do so!. TF is coming off a good year of starting at a JUCO. Bench hasn't really had a significant snap since HS, but he's benefited the most by bing in OB's system longer than the others.

Ferguson coming in for spring practice is a big deal, I think. And because he's fresh off a good competitive year in the Jr. College ranks, I like his chances at starting.

OB is in much better situation QB-wise then he was last year and look how that turned out!

  • I've been thinking he would start even when we were in the running for Waters. Experience will count for something if the offense is as difficult to pick up as we've been led to believe.

I don't have any doubt OB will play the best QB. My ideal situation is Bench or Ferg play well next season and Hack wins the starting job after the redshirt year.

This is the wildcard, IMO. Which is why I think Hack redshirts this year. That means the competition is really between Bench and Ferguson. Bench has the advantage of being in OBs system for a year. And Ferguson has the advantage of starting QB experience at the next level.

I'll be following the QB competition this year from Spring training thru the regular season. I truly believe though that OB wants to redshirt as many freshmen as he can including AB and Hack!

  • I think another big factor will be what are Ferguson's intangibles like? What kind of leadership does he show? Seems like Bench has full support from his teammates which is huge. WIll Ferguson be able to come in and gain the trust of his teammates to lead the team? I think if he can, he has a great shot to win the job IMO.

  • Hack will red shirt, IMO. I think Ferg's ends up starting, but who really knows at this point. Even Bill does not know. All comes down to who is ready for Cuse.
