    According to "Free the Nittany Lions! The Amazing Saga of the NCAA & PSU Football" by Keith E. Nelson, professor of Psychology at PSU and member of the faculty senate, he believe that Gene Marsh and the NCAA were the Greeks and PSU were the Trojans (essentially they planted Marsh, he believes). Smart move by the NCAA if he was planted within the higher ups at PSU to gauge reaction to Freeh Report and sanctions.

    This whole thing with Gene Marsh has stunk since the beginning.

  • Everyone needs to take a step back and look at this for what it is. Corbett is merely making a desperate attempt to gain votes for re-election. He will be happy to drag this thing out for two years so that he can use it to campaign. "I'm fighting for Penn State!!! I'm fighting for our taxpayer dollars!!!! I'm the only one who will stand up and say that this is wrong!!!!"

    IMO, you will see a multi-year fight that will end with the funds for the fine being used exclusively in PA. That is it. The NCAA is going to walk a fine line so that they don't give up too much power. The easiest thing to "give up" is the ability to direct where the funds will be spent.

    only issue with that is if he was retained as counsel for PSU, that is a MAJOR ethics violation that not only would lead to being disbarred, but would be a huge open and shut malpractice civil suit for PSU as well. I don't see him doing that.

    just my opinion but that's not going to swing voters....lessening the football sanctions, however, will. Thus is why I think he fights tooth and nail for it. It is literally his only chance.

    no offense, but until we hear what he has today, no one knows how far or hard he and the commonwealth are going to go. it could be just a ploy that he drags out just long enough to get some votes next year, or it could end up being a landmark case like OU case in 1984. Like I mentioned, anti trust suits and the NCAA are not strangers and the bigger college sports gets the more people that will have increased motivation to go after their authority. the OU case was about TV rights and a HUGE loss for the NCAA. There is still a pending suit filed by former athletes about licensing rights. recently a judge condemned the NCAA for their handling of the USC investigation and there is a yet another suit from a coach that was fired because of unproven NCAA allegations.

    The bottom line is that college sports is too big for them to control as a small time nonprofit and one of these law suits is going to change the landscape of their authority just like others have in the past. if it's not the PA suit, it'll be another one. it's inevitable IMO. sooner or later, their legal department is going to be bigger than their compliance department with 10x the budget. They will be consumed defending their purpose.

    I agree with that, I just think that Corbett doesn't care at all about PSU. However, he will certainly challenge everything which is why he is holding his PC in State College. If he was just going after where the funds were to be spent, he wouldn't be making the trip to Centre Co.
