    The State of Pennsylvania is preparing a lawsuit against the NCAA to challenge sanctions levied against Penn State University in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation. Penn State, which has been working in concert with the NCAA since the scandal, is not involved in preparing the suit. It is being handled solely by the state.

  • Oh wow, I didn't know they could potentially challenge the sanctions themselves. I guess they might not actually be doing that, but we can hope. Hopefully, the money at least stays in PA.

    Political ploy or not, it's a good thing. The sanctions levied against the student athletes and football program were unjustifiably harsh. All based off of a flawed report without any due process. Like Corbett or not, I hope the state does sue the NCAA

  • Corbett playing both sides of the fence. Maybe it will benefit us somehow now, even if it is just keeping the funds in state. I STILL don't know why the NCAA cares about that.

  • "Penn State has no involvement in this suit". Well played here, doesn't mean we didn't know about it or weren't involved in discussions about what the state is doing. I think this is a Corbett political ploy, the guy is dying on the vine and has no other choice if he wants to continue his political career. That said, PSU already cowtailed to the NCAA AND if WE challenge it, it gets messy. Plus for some reason, we seem to be in a much better PR place right now than I ever thought we'd be, so publicly professing no involvement and letting the state do the dirty work, in a case that really has some legs given what the NCAA did, could make this reaaaaaaally interesting.

    Emmert may ultimately have to pull a Goodell, get out in front of this and we end up getting some reductions IMO.

  • Quickly, who is your AG and his/her political affiliation?

    This doesn't necessarily have to be done from the Governor's Office of course, but I don't know the PA make up of elected officials. Or if your AG is appointed or (I assume) elected.

    AG is elected and is a dem.

    I believe she also has raised concerns over Corbett's role in the investigation of Sandusky in '98

    She isn't in office yet is she? If not in office the incumbent still is in power. They would be the ones to file suit. If the AG is elected they won't need to answer, legally, to the Governor and can file suit on their own. If she is taking over for a member of the GOP, and the the GOP AG is the one filing it, it is an interesting bit of last minute filing that the new AG will be forced to run with or abandon.

    I kinda forgot about the fact that she isn't in office. The current AD is a repub. I can imagine the pressure she would be under if she chooses to abandon.

    I will be interested if they actually go after sanctions or just to keep the money within the state of PA. Should be an interesting piece to read.

    I'm willing to bet its the money staying I state. I would be pretty shocked if they go after the sanctions.

    Regardless of whether they go after them, the court might address them anyway. If they make one of the terms of the sanctions invalid ($$$), it's tough to validate the rest of them. Slippery slope and all.

    With the NCAA making the determination of where it goes, how much of the $60 million will actually go to help kids? I would bet that half will actually go to help kids, the other half will go to the NCAA as administrative fees for overseeing the distribution and or will be unaccounted for.
