Starting QB?

  • Read in several articles that BOB will not name a starting QB until prior to the season opener... I don't know about anyone else, but I hate that ... Anyone else's opinions?

  • The only people that it hurts are the fans who want instant gratification. For all we know, it could be a 2 person race to the public, but the QB's and BOB are already 99% sure who will start at the beginning of the season.

And if BOB truly doesn't know, it can only help for a more impressive opener since they won't have time to fully gameplan.

  • I think he's just trying to get a feel for the qb's and maybe it is in the teams best interest to wait and see.One qb might have an ok spring and tear it up in fall.I am one that is glad that he will take it to a two qb race after spring.Im wanting to see PJ as the man,but would like to see Bench as well.

  • I think a lot of people get upset about not naming a QB early this year because of the garbage we had to sit through with last years coaching staff not naming a QB.

To the contrary, I think a lot of schools/teams just want as much time as possible to evaluate, especially in a situation like the present where the new staff has not seen these guys play. I of course want to know who starts, but am absolutely willing to let it play out.

  • I am OK with them not naming a QB right now. I would rather them wait and give each QB a chance to prove themselves. Why name a QB now? What does it really accomplish in spring?

Fall is where the staff is going to install more of the playbook, right now it is just the basics. Naming a starting QB, probably wouldn't change that. Also, a starting QB isn't a guarantee that players will rally around him. We already know that Bolden and McGloin have their guys on the team and I would be that Jones does, also.

  • My guess is he may not name it because as it's already been said before......it seems every day someone new has the better day. Today McGloin looks better, the next day Bolden shows some signs....then Jones....

With it going like that, it's hard to decide.

Personally, I'd prefer a guy be named 1 week into fall camp so they have a chance to develop. Even if it's a tight race, still pick a guy and go with it. If he stinks it up for 2 weeks and does not show he can do it, then switch. Not like you lose anything switching at that point.

  • I agree, he's only seen these guys practice a few times, if he named a starter right now he'd be doing them, us and himself a disservice

  • I would personally prefer he waits... no starter named until much closer to the season.
PJ could shine on the field and not be available....
Both McGloin or Bolden could look the part but struggle like last year.

I'd want as much information as you can get before it's officially time to start gearing up for the season. If your "starter" is losing reps to 2nd/3rd on the chart and missing out on first team reps as week one approaches, that would be a problem.

  • New playbook, new system, new everything.

BOB is going to need more than a week or two to decide whom the #1 guy is. There are so many factors going into it and at this point all he can do is try to trim it from 3 to 2 and split reps a bit differently.

  • Competition breeds success. I'm cool with him waiting too. Hopefully someone steps up and surprises us next season!

  • I don't care when the starter gets named, if it's the week before the opener then fine. I just want the best guy for the job to win the job. I know most of us want PJ only because it brings us hope. We have seen plenty of McGloin and Bolden and we all want to see something better. I think under the new coaching staff we will see QBS start to develop and not regress, I think that is the part we won't fully see until the fall. If McGloin/Bolden wins the job and they look much better this year then we will know it was coaching/ offensive system.

The coaches have time and there is no reason to name the starter yet, competition is always a Good thing. With all that being said there is no way I want to see anything with our QBS like we saw last year.
