Starters next Year

  • Who will probably be the starters next year and who else will get playing time

    PSUgo15

  • What do you guys think

    PSUgo15

  • QB: Going with McGloin right now cuz he seems to be the only one that can play
    RB: Redd
    FB: Zordich
    WR: Brown
    WR:Smith
    WR: Kersey
    TE: Gilliam/Haplea
LT: Smith (4 year starter I think)
    LG: Kolb
    C: Stank
    RG: Urshel (sp?)
    RT: Farrell

    DE: Stanley
    DE: Massaro
    DT: Hill
    DT: Jones
    LB: Hodges
    LB: Fortt
    LB: Mauti
    CB: Morris
    CB: Amos
    FS: SOA
    SS: Willis

  • QB McGloin (until someone steps up in practice, he's going to be the starter)
    RB Redd
    FB Zordich
    WR Brown
    WR Drake
TE Haplea (I think Gilliam will get ample time, may even start if he's 100% back)
    LT Smith
LG Mangiro (I'm hoping they let Smith/Mangiro play and develop)
    C Stankiewitch
    RG Urschel
    RT Farrell

Honestly I have no clue about the offensive line with the new staff. I think Drake and Brown will be the top 2 receivers with Belton seeing plenty of reps. I like Gilliam's potential if he recovered well. The QB race is going to be the position to watch again this offseason banghead. I expect Zordich to be utilized this year, while BOB doesn't have his tight ends.

    DE Massaro
    DE Stanley
    DT Hill
    DT Jones
    LB Mauti
    LB Fortt
    LB Hodges
    CB Morris
    CB Amos
    S Willis
    S SOA

I expect to see lots of different players to get reps at end. I'm hoping to see a Barnes or Oakman step in. I fully expect the starting three LBs to be Fortt/Mauti/Hodges with either Mauti or Fortt in the middle. If Fortt is getting to 247, I'd expect him to play in the middle and let Mauti stay on the outside. Carson wasn't bad, but he never really did anything of note. Hopefully Thomas can stay out of trouble and he'll contribute in at least the nickel. Safety is just pathetic.

This, although I think we see plenty of Glenn Carson at MLB, and Mike Hull may split with reps with Mauti early in the season until his knee is healed. Ditto for Baublitz splitting reps with Massaro.

  • Im willing to bet Carson starts. Vandy loves him and he did a fine job last year. He'll get roatated out plenty, but plying against B1G teams he will be nice to have in the middle.

    MTayl72

  • Mauti, Fortt, Hodges, damn.....Cant wait til Sept!!!

    MixedDrink11

  • I fully expect Deion Barnes to be a starter at DE next year.
I'm not nearly as high on Massaro as most others I guess. But Barnes has the makings of a stud and with the new strength program, his physical development will be much improved.
I know it sounds kinda homerish but I also wouldn't be surprised to see Baublitz also make an impact at DE. He was another one tabbed as "can't miss" coming out of HS and I loved his physical ability.

And Dear Lord please let Jordan Lucas be able to step in at starting FS right away.

  • I think one of the most exciting thing about this whole transition from Paterno's system to the Bill O'Brien system is that everyone on the team or coming in gets a full re-evaluation by different sets of eyes.

Sure the LB and DL are probably going to remain at the same sort of depth chart due to retention of Vandy and LJ Sr., but I would imagine that they will also have to take into account what Roof wants to do on defense and any input coming from O'Brien himself. We may in fact see a decent amount of movement of players to new positions because of this evaluation or because of off-season gains/losses made in S&C.

I am interested in particular with what happens with guys like Gilliam, Drake, Thomas, Shrive, Yancich, etc.

  • That defensive front 7 has me drooling. I know Still will be a big loss but Mauti and Massaro back from injury really make it good. I think Jordan Hill is going to have a monster year as well. I think we would have heard his name alot more this year if Still wasnt so dominant. I think the defense will be lights out next year. I know PSU loses all 4 secondary guys, but other than Lynn none were better than average players.

Hopefully with the addition of BOB, the offense atleast has a pulse next year. If it does, I think PSU will be playing in Indy for the BIG championship

Where did you see anything about Fortt wanting to get to 247 pounds? That's pretty damn big. He played at 235 this year.

I agree with your whole list. LG and LT could be different, but I like your choices.

I guess I could have put Mangiro in at LG. Who else would be at LT?

Possibly Gress, but I think Smith is the most likely choice. Kolb, Arc, Shrive, and Mangiro will all get a shot at LG. I think the right side is pretty firm w Farrell, Urschel, and Stank.

I agree with that at LG. I wonder if Gress might as well if he doesn't take one of the tackle spots.

Probably. If Smith emerges at LT, that's really the most open battle in the spring/summer. There are 5-6 guys who could win the spot.

  • I hope we see Amos at FS. I'm not sure Willis is athletic enough to play the position, maybe SS.

I would agree with this quite a bit.

I like Drake too but I was just assuming Drake would be behind Moo-Moo in the slot so I figured I would throw a bigger receiver out there along Brown.

My feeling always is, with WR's, that they will rotate regardless, so I am not worried about who actually starts the game. I like the list, and about what I would have to. I like Kersey's potential if he can put it together

  • I like Brown, BMF, and Drake as the starting wrs. BMF is a bit of a wildcard, but I thought he ran good routes in the little extended action we saw him when Moye was out. Unfortunately, he got hurt too so he did not get to show much. I think with a proper precision passing game that they will want, the coaches will prefer his route running over Kersey's. Drake belongs on the field, and I am not sure MooMoo does.

At DE, I am not sure I like Massaro and Stanley together. I think they are our best two DEs, but I would prefer a better run stuffer on the opposite side. Baublitz may be that guy.

In the secondary, I just don't want to see Willis and SOA out there together. Hopefully, if it is not possible due to CB depth to move Amos over, Keiser can step up.

  • I bet MattyZ has a breakout redshirt freshman year...he's like a hybrid between gronk and welker (at least that's what i hope he'll be anyways haha)
