Staff Recruiting

  • How would you rate their ability to recruit? I believe that is the 1st thing we can judge them on, before we see an on the field product. Certainly put in a good effort trying to salvage the class, reaching out to 2013's, and expanding our recruiting footprint. All of these things aside, are you excited for what this staff can/could do in 2013?

  • Absolutely...I'm really excited to get the 2013 class going

Yes, I'm excited about the recruiting prospects for 2013. It will be nice having the WHOLE STAFF recruiting and not four or five. It is bound to help. Staff will be expanding the recruiting efforts to different parts of the country and not spending more time in Delaware than Florida. It will snag some kids this program normally doesn't get.

They know what the shortcomings are within this program already and they haven't even had one practice. They know we have a problem at QB; identified that by getting Bench which is an upgrade over Morningwheg. They identified a major area of concern by getting some late DB guys. They also thought our strength and conditioning program sucked before and have done something with it.

The effort will be there and I expect 2013 class to be a boatload better than this class.

  • Good recruitng staff, better than before the only loses we've suffered is Bradley ( ovbiously a great coach) and maybe Kermitt buggs

JMO, Bradley's recruiting prowess was starting to lose its luster a bit. That comment probably strikes a nerve with people, but if you sit back and look at the recent classes, who did he get? When he was one, very few are better. That said, PSU has right now has very few players on its roster recruited by Bradley.

  • I would give them a solid C at this point. They havent really done anything to make me excited for 2013 just yet, other than to get this dreadful end of the year over with and in the past. For the most part, we lost out on the key players that were previously commited, we didnt get any high profile commits from those uncommited players, and werent able to sway any high profile players commited elsewhere. I think this is the 1st signing day in ages where PSU fans as a whole arent really excited for the day, as we are about to sign a class that lacks quite a bit in talent, but gets points for in heart. I know a lot of that has to do with the situation, but we cant use that as an excuse. Meyer just had sanctions dropped on him and put together a top 3 class in 7 weeks. Miami is a candidate for the death penalty, although unlikely, and they will sign a top 10-15 class as well.

I am excited for Wednesday to be over so we can see what the staff can do moving forward. So far, a good effort but average results.

    Spulv400

  • to that end......who has Larry Johnson got in the last several years? Not a lot for as celebrated as he is as an ace recruiter

  • I like the staff. I think they will represent the academic/athletic balance well, which means they will interact well with parents. You will see a pendulum swing in a couple of years in our favor. In the short term, we need to own PA, NJ, and MD. That alone will give us a top 15 class. If we get in the top 20 next year I will be thrilled, because I feel like we have a staff that will make our players better and stronger than in years' past. I said it several times this year..we easily could have went 11-2 with no passing game, poor offensive line play, WR's that can't get off the line of scrimmage cleanly, and a defense that seemed like it played prevent half the time. Personally I think if we survive the early test at Virginia we will enter the conference season with big momentum. Our secondary is what really scares me. I think we will see a lot of kids switching positions in spring practice.

...and if you're not down with that, then I got 2 words for ya.."suck it!!"

  • New staff from different areas of the country which will open up opportunities especially down south. Looking forward to 2013.

Keep in mind our staff has not even been in the same room together yet, and our HC has not even started the job!!

Yes, but he was a great coach and he would've gotten Cox, and almost landed Pryor. I didn't like Kenney as a coach, he was a good recruiter but JMO a bad coach

Bradley was cut off at the knees by Joe re:recruiting.

That was all a while ago if you think about it. The PSU scandle happend just recently in the heat of recruitng. And this class is 2 times better than the class in 08 (recently, 14 commits) This class is ovbiously much better. And shouldn't have been considering the surcomstances

To answer your question, based on what I've found:

Brent Wilkerson, Deion Barnes, Donovan Smith, Kyle Baublitz, Dakota Royer, Malcolm Willis, Derrick Thomas, Chaz Powell, Navorro Bowman, Maurice Evans, Aaron Maybin, Bani Gbadyu, Jared Odrick, Antonio Logan-El, Phil Taylor, AJ Wallace, JB Walton, etc.

Pretty much all 4 and 5 star guys. And that's just in the past few years.

    Jay23

  • 3-4-5 years ago on all of these guys except Smith and Barnes.........

    Spulv400

  • I believe he got Gaia and Dowrey as well. IMO, he would have done more this year except for the scandal. Also, my guess is that LJ played a big role in getting Pollard. All of our guys had one hand behind their back since the HC didn't recruit.

Is that a serious statement? EVERYONE we have gotten from Maryland and Virginia has been LJ. Just to name a few...

    Devon Still
    Aaron Maybin
    Navorro Bowman
    Adrian Amos

If I am wrong on any of these feel free to correct me guys, but I truly do not think you can question LJ's recruiting ability. He is one of the best in the B1G.

My bad Jay...hadn't seen your post before posting my response.

Again, I love LJ. He has, IN THE PAST, landed some high profile guys. He sends dudes to the NFL. But all the names mentioned, outside of 2 star Amos, and Donovan Smith......we are talking about guys that were over 4-5 years ago when they were recruited

    Spulv400

  • How can anyone begin to call out Larry Johnson in any aspect of his position at PSU.

First and foremost the guy is still here. You don't think that he couldn't get another D-Line coaching position (at the very least) at a bunch of different high level schools.

Recruiting-wise: This guy has been instrumental in the recruitment of many of the best players to play at PSU over the last decade. There is absolutely no reasons to question his recruiting prowess.

Player development: Ask the NFL. Look at the All-Americans.

If one wants to complain... complain about something or someone who deserves to be complained about. LJ Sr. is not in that category.

Hell... his offspring has one of the greatest rushing seasons of all time in college football, (he's a knuckle head, but his 2000 yard season was amazing)

  • Barnes, Baublitz, Royer...pollard? If 2 star Amos becomes a draft pick will you be saying the same thing in a couple years?

agree on every aspect.......the original post I was responding to said Bradley hadnt landed many big names in a while. I was just saying that niether had LJ. Several years ago he was dead on and dominated the mid Atlantic. That has not been the case for several years.

I wasnt calling out LJ.....just pointing out that while Bradley hasnt killed it in recruiting, niether has our best recruiter.

He's also probably the only reason some elite guys even considered PSU, like Jelani Jenkins, Shariff Floyd, Noah Spence, Ishaq Williams, Jarron Jones, etc.

    Jay23

  • While I am very optimistic and hopeful, it is really hard to tell at this point. They have made a tremendous effort and got some guys in a short period of time, but the next two years will really be the tell.
