Spring Preview: Wide receivers

We know what Allen Robinson brings to the table, but what else should we expect from Penn State's wide receivers in 2013? Our spring preview series continues.

    Geno. Lewis. Nuff said.

  • Given the staff seeming to think that WR is a need, I wouldn't be too shocked to see DaeSean Hamilton play, but I think it would be best if he RS's.

I've been wondering if Williams might be moved to the slot. Would be a dangerous group of 4 top receivers if we had Robinson, Felder, Williams, and Lewis. The slot is a place I've wondered about. Personally, I thought Malik Golden would have looked great there, but the staff knows better than I do. I think Richy Anderson has a good skill set for the slot and could definitely see time there. Kenney...I hope he can contribute, but I don't feel like I can assume anything with him at this point.

  • What are the chances we see a position switch or a transfer from this group? A couple of older guys seemed to be buried on the depth chart.

  • IMO...Robinson's added muscle will help him just enough to create separation between him and opposing CB's. I still see Robinson having a similar year. It's hard to keep a guy with that much talent away from the ball. As far as Geno goes...well GRS154 you're correct. This kid is superstar in the rough.

I kind of like the idea of Lewis in the slot early in the year.... bigger bodied than most slot receivers, but a terrific athlete that would give LBs and safeties nightmares.

Kenney needs to touch the ball more this year, You can't have your fastest guy on the bench all the time.If he is having problems with the routes, then run more reverses.

So long as when it touches the ball, he also catches it. Routes were a problem, but so were his hands and his general receiving ability. I'd much rather get the ball in the hands of Belton in that role. Not as fast, but more of a game breaker with the ball in his hands. Belton will make people miss, Kenney will try to run past them.

I couldn't agree with you more! Kenney may be the fastest player on the team but, you also have to have all the other attributes that go along with being a receiver. toot

  • Let's play the "who does he compare to" game. Not what type of career or success will a guy have, but who's the best comparable player based on size and skill sets.

I'll start with Geno Lewis. I think based on size and athleticism, he compares favorably to a young Anquan Boldin, who at FSU and early in his NFL career was a big-bodied slot-type, underneath routes kind of guy who was also a terrific athlete. Not a burner, but enough speed and athleticism to go with his better-than-average size and strong hands.

Geno Lewis: Brandon Lloyd. Same body type, stride, and acrobatic catch ability. Nearly identical actually,
Robinson: Dez Bryant minus 12 pounds. Not timed 4.4 guys but always seem to get behind the defense and go up over defenders for the ball with ease and great body control. Both physical after the catch.
Need to see more from Trevor Williams.
Kenney: Name any NFL WR with great speed and not much else.
DaeSean Hamilton: Gem says Crabtree. That would be fantastic. I see Patrick Crayton.

  • Prediction: Trevor Williams will finish with the second highest catches out of this group.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

I don't see that at all.....Especially since Felder is still around. Plus once Geno steps in....Williams' playing time will decrease IMO.

Interesting.... I like the Lewis-Lloyd comparison. I thought of Boldin because of body type and physicality. Similar to Hakeem Nicks as well re size/speed/physicality.

I'd love to see Dez Bryant in A-Rob, but I just don't. Dez is a top 3 "talent" at the WR position when it comes down to pure physical (read: below the shoulders) ability. For Robinson, I see him at either the Justin Blackmon (overrated and over-drafted IMO) or the AJ Green end of the spectrum. Not that Robinson will be a top 10 pick in the NFL, but neither are burners. Both have great hands and battle for the ball--i.e. the "my ball" mentality. I think that's where Robinson is headed. Now if A-Rob adds another 15 pounds, he could be in the Brandon Marshall category too.

Again, I'm not saying they end up as high draft picks like these guys, but if you're looking for a ceiling, this is what I envision.

Interesting. You give Gene Lewis an in depth review despite the fact that you've never seen him play at this level, but you say you need to see more from Trevor Williams who saw PT in just about every game last year. That makes somewhere in the neighborhood of zero sense.

    Just sayin.

I saw a lot more of Geno out of high school and in person.

Then you saw him play QB bro. Hasn't played WR since sophomore year. I guess that's where you're getting whole "athletic catch ability" comparison with Brandon Lloyd - from his sophomore year of high school. Hence me saying "you've never seen him play at this level." Guess you missed that part. But this isn't a reading comprehension lesson so I'll move on.

Your logic is flawed bud, if you don't see that then I can't help you. I expect a lot out of Lewis, but to give your analysis of him, and to say you need to see more out of Williams is a straight joke.

Much of my breakdown had to do with Lewis' body type as well. I know I watched him play QB. The athleticism is still there along with the build and strides and what I've seen on film of him at WR.
I can give more about Lewis after seeing him up close and personal (HS or not) as opposed to 10 completely forgettable catches by Trevor Williams.
The logic isn't flawed at all. I've still seen more of Lewis than Williams even though Williams has caught a pass in a Penn State uniform. That's like saying I can't make a more accurate NFL comparison of a newly-drafted rookie WR that I've seen a lot in college than an obscure 4th WR of some rival team simply because that 4th WR has seen time on the field as an NFL player.

  • In your example, If he hasn't played WR since sophomore year, no, you can't. Especially compared with a kid who had 10 catches but got game reps all season his first NFL season, again, in your example.

I just think you may be biased, just a guess. If you are, its ok, say it, but don't say you need to see more out of a player WHO ACTUALLY PLAYED, and give a favorable review/comparison of a player who has essentially been invisible in Blue and White. Its ridiculous to rationalize.

    There, I'm done.
