Spring Preview: Tight ends

Our spring preview series explores what should once again be the deepest group of tight ends in the country.

  • I'm incredibly excited about the dynamic potential of this group. With a new starting QB, these guys create so many different looks and mismatches in the secondary. The QBs have the size and arm strength to get the ball out quickly, we should have some consistency in moving the chains with big targets like these. LBs & safeties reading the TEs off the line should keep 8-9 men out of the box at the snap. That little extra defense read time should help build rhythm & confidence in Benchsonhackenferg. Even in a blitz, one of these guys presents a huge target on a hot route. Can't wait.

    Benchsonhackenferg.

As a writer, I hope this doesn't catch on.

As a fan, it would be kind of awesome.

  • I'll be interested to see if the group as a whole can eclipse 100 receptions. The tight ends should be a good outlet for the new QB and I think they can hit the mark.

  • I'm most excited to see James and Wilkerson. As it's been reported James is turning into a freak and Wilkerson has gotten rave reviews.

    Should be fun to watch.

  • "The challenges for O'Brien remains the same -- finding ways to get everyone on the field and making sure everyone gets targets". This can be said for RB and WR as well. When was the last time we had to worry about keeping so many skill position players happy? I really hope we can figure out a way to keep BOB around for a long time as it is nice to have an offense that we are excited about. This group of TE's are going to be fun to watch, especially once our QB's gain a little experience.

    +1 for Benchsonhackenferg

A "green" QBs best friend...our stable of TEs.

Hell Lehman is the least talked about maybe and I think he has a real fine skills set and plays well.

Lehman is our version of Brandon Myers.... not a physical freak but a solid and steady TE who is more than capable of getting the job done out of the Y-TE spot.

  • PSU TE's create matchup issues as A Rob will demand a ton of attention this year. James will be an absolute freak with his height and a full year under his belt and Carter was damn good last year. If PSU has a QB that can limit the turvovers, the O will still put up some points this year.

  • I got a feeling we will have a this group will have over 100 catches, with 13+ tds. James and Carter will be lethal.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

  • I think this offense with the sanctions is going to be better than any offense we've ever had. That stable of tight ends is going to keep Big Ten defensive coordinators up at night. Just get a solid offensive line, a quarterback that can deliver the ball, and a running back to keep the linebackers honest it's all good.

  • I don't think any other College Football team has the studs that we have at the TE position. Everyone knows BOB and his style of play now, but the special thing about it is his ability to disguise his TE's for big plays. With another year in the books for James, can anyone else see Gronkowski's double???

  • Our embarassment of riches in this department is fantastic.

This is probably the dumbest comment I will ever post, but imagine if trading players or loaning players was a part of college football? We could trade a TE for somewhere we lack depth. Okay, back to reality...

I think Wilkerson is going to be better than Carter when it's all said and done.

  • With Gilliam at tackle how many times do you think BO'B runs a tackle eligible plays, don't forget about this in the offense.

I thought he had that type of ability and had the size/speed combo to be our version of Gronk when he came in as an EE, but even then I didn't think it would actually happen! I'm not saying James will burst onto the scene in his 2nd year the way Gronk did in his 2nd year in the NFL, nor am I saying that I think James will do the damages on Sundays that Gronk has done, but I wouldn't be shocked either.

It's not that much of a stretch considering JJ is pretty much the same size as Gronk, with similar testing numbers already...........and he's 18.

  • This will be one of the longer WR/TE squads PSU has had.

    A Rob 6-3
    Felder 6-2
    T Williams 6-1
    James 6-7
    Lehman 6-6
    Carter 6-3
    E Lewis 6-1
    Matty Z 6-3
    Kenney 5-11

I know some could be off an inch or so, but it's not a small WR group. We have 2 power forwards with some good height and A Rob plays a little bigger than his 6-3 height. I hope which ever QB is out there can exploit this advantage as PSU will be bigger than most secondaries this fall.

  • I still can't believe that Jesse James has only scratched the surface of his potential. 18 years old. A true soph. WOW. Beastmode is now a 6' 7" white dude storming down the seams- Cannot be stopped, Will not be stopped.

    IronLion05

  • Benchsonhackenferg + TE group + play action= TE seam route = problem for cover 2 zone defenses

Really think a strong arm QB can zip some balls in that 10-20 yd area over the middle. Our offense can really get more vertical with a stronger armed QB. I thought last year a lot of the times we are working in front of the LB's and I hope we can start getting behind them and really open the run game.
