Our spring previews series continues with a look at a Penn State secondary that is about three-quarters of the way settled.

  • Good stuff Jeff.. Really enjoying these spring preview articles!

  • Aggressive, instinctive safety play really makes a difference for a defense. It will be very interesting to watch how Midget develops this position.

    fullback dive

  • I am really excited to have good safety play for once. In my opinion it has historically been a position lacking athleticism and talent on the roster. Could be fun to watch them back there this year.

  • I'm not sure what to think of Lucas yet. I'll be interested to see who after Davis and Amos step up during the spring game. I expect both of the Smiths to play, at least on special teams, this Fall. I think Anthony Smith will surprise some people who are assuming he'll redshirt and not contribute right away. He's an underrated athlete for his size.

  • Jeff i remember info on a few guys hearing they were bigger this winter but don't remember hearing anything about Davis. Does he look bigger than the buck sixty he played at last year?

Saw him outside the football complex today and honestly, it was hard to tell. The difference between a buck sixty and a buck sixty-five isn't always evident (believe me, I know).

Morris said he weighed in today at 188, and just looking at him and Davis, you wouldn't be able to tell he was 20 pounds heavier.

  • Unlike most other positions, we actually have pretty good depth at DB. We'll see if the quality is there to match the quantity, but most Big Ten teams can't pass the ball any way.

Jeff, do you expect we'll see Kiley on the field this fall? Also, I'm surprised Golden is at S rather than CB.

  • It's nice to have some bodies in the secondary this year heading into the spring. I like having experienced safeties. If Willis and SOA stay healthy we should be ok at the position. We all know Amos is legit and should be our best player in the secondary. Davis should be the front runner at the other corner. He will be fine in coverage but might still be a liability tackling and against the run. Lucas was a guy I thought would get more snaps last season and is probably the DB I'm most looking forward to seeing. Jordan Smith will play and should make the two deep at corner. Hopefully JDV and Keiser can be competent depth guys. Along with Lucas, Golden is probably the other guy I'm looking forward to seeing the most. Depth is better overall but it is yet to be determined if the talent level is where it needs to be.
