Spring Preview: Quarterbacks

  • One example might be here in Seattle though, where Cyler Miles has a good shot at unseating 2 year starter Keith Price - then again Price struggled last year pretty badly. That offense was a mess, with HC and QB criticizing each other through the press.

I would agree, but to be fair, I'm not sure any of us can say for sure how OB will manage this QB situation. Other than 2 years at GT and 1 at Duke, he's never really had to make these decisions. He was pretty much set at QB in is time in the NFL. I don't know enough about his early years coaching at GT and Duke to know if they would offer a hint to his style or not.

He strikes me as an open competition guy for the most part, but there is also something to be said for giving the starter some length on his leash. Also, he named McGloin the starter very early and didn't look back at any point in time. Was that because he was so far ahead that it was crystal clear he was the guy? I'd say yes, but some of his comments also suggest that he thinks its important for a team to have a clear #1 QB.

Last spring OB was quoted as throwing out a play in a QB meeting and asking for a QB to march up to the board and diagram it with all the options. McGloin jumped up and did it correctly while the rest watched. The race for the starter was effectively over. It was intellect and understanding of his system that won the day last year.

Saw an interview the other day where OB mentioned the understanding of the playbook and the system as big factors for the starter (obviously). He has a complex offense that requires complete understanding and split second execution along with instant recognition of defenses and the best play option. OB demands smart QB's first and talented QB's second. This set appear to have both skills. I believe our QB's last spring did not represent those skills as well and McGloin quickly jumped to the head of the class on his understanding and knowledge alone. Naturally they have to be able to deliver the ball but that is why they were recruited in the first place.

IMO, that in a nut shell was last years decision process and will be again this spring and fall with the exception of the fact we have no game experience represented in this group.

The great part is the growth you could see in McGloin. He has someone who believed in him and named him the starter, he needed that confidence. Once he had it he flourished. It bodes well for our future QB's!

anything can happen..... I just think we are in between a rock and a hard place.... IF there were no sanctions I would make Hack the favorite....
