This is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever heard of. First of all I am sick and tired of hearing how gracious Bama fans were to us. Do you know why they were SOOO gracious??? Because they knew they were going to KICK OUR ASS. Do I think many Bama fans respect Joe and Penn State? Sure of course. But let's not kid ourselves had we been ANY kind of threat last year that place would have been hostile from the get go.
They call it "Home Field Advantage" for a reason. Which means from the time the OTHER team steps out on the field until the clock strikes 00:00 as fans we should do our best to make it as uncomfortable and if possible intimidating as we can. Booing, jeering, screaming (as long as it is clean) are all perfectly acceptable before and during a game. Once the game is over then I agree whole heartily giving your opponent a round of applause win or lose.
If Bama fans are strolling by our tailgate I would say hello, be courteous and even invite some of them for a beer but lets not get all peace love & fuzzy here. Besides the only thing Bama and PSU have in common is a long successful football history and two old coaches beloved by there fan bases. But PSU and Bama are as different as Joe and Bear. Success with Honor and the Grand Experiment came from one coach and one school.

"Last year, Alabama fans were kind, open, and respectful to Joe Paterno and Penn State fans alike. The Alabama student section even gave Joe Paterno a standing ovation every time he walked by.
In return we're asking that all fans STAND AND CLAP FOR ALABAMA AS THEY TAKE THE SIDELINE BEFORE KICKOF. Alabama is not Ohio State. They aren't Michigan. They're one of the most successful programs in College Football history and a friend of Penn State.
Give'm hell at kickoff, but return the favor they gave us last year first. In the very least. Don't boo them."

Huh? I'd stand up and clap for Bear Bryant (not the team, only the legendary coach) if he was still the HC at Alabama........ Since he is not, I would be hospitable and polite outside the stadium, but the only team I'd stand up and clap for, wears plain dark blue and white uniforms.

Guys, I am only 24 years old and the only way I have been able to see any of the old classics b/t PSU and BAMA has been from ESPN classic and such...but this thread and the mutual respect that our programs have for each other has been something I have understood because of my parents and GParents. I was in the student section last year for the game and it gave me chills watching Joe PA walk past us...the guy is a legend. I wish I was able to attend the game but unfortunately, will not be able too. I also wish this was more than a home and away series. Much respect, however I will not be cheering for you guys either haha.

It is quite nice to hear the younger generation (<30) speak of admiration and respect for what Joe represents and has done for not only Penn State but also for college football. It is a shame that it takes opposing fans to realize that. It seems all the younger generation PSU fans continually talk of running Joe out of town and how he is hurting PSU by sticking around. Alabama fans can relate very well with what happens when a legend retires. It wasn't easy to replace Bear Bryant, just like it will not be easy to replace Joe. But for some reason a lot of people think that PSU immediately becomes a national title contender the minute Joe leaves.

It took Bama officials over 20 years to get it right. Ray Perkins was a nightmare as the choice to follow Bear, even though Bear himself had picked him as his successor. The first thing he did was take down the Bear's legendary tower that he had used for decades to watch practices from. Next he ended the tradition of playing Rocky Top at full blast at practice during tennessee week (and yes I know I didn't capitalize the "t" in tennessee.... and I never will!) Point is Ray was so worried about not being compared to Bear that he went too far out of his way to distance himself from of the Tide's long-held traditions. After Perkins the Tide tried a non-Bama man, Bill Curry, who was a terrible coach who actually seemed to hate our program at times. It was weird. Stallings was next and was a Bear-prototype who had great success. Unfortunately he only stayed a few years before retiring. After Stallings we made the biggest mistake in the history of Bama football and promoted another Bama man, Mike Dubose who had zero business being called a D-1 head coach. Dubose had zero control over the players and/or the boosters and his severe lack of leadership ability helped get the Tide slammed by NCAA sanctions. Then after another couple of brief tries out of the family with Francione and Mike Price it was time to go back with another Bama-man. Mike Shula played QB at Bama, so naturally he deserved a shot, right? Wrong. Shula is a great guy from a great family but he acted like one of the players instead of a head coach. Luckily it appears we've finally learned and just tried to hire the best guy for the job, regardless of whether or not they had prior connections to the Tide program. Saban has embraced all of our traditions and he's confident enough in his own accomplishments that he's not worried about any of the comparisons of him to anybody. I hope Penn State hires the right guy and avoids some of the pitfalls we went through. Trust me, it was a freakin' nightmare for years.... The probation problems at Bama kept the Tide from attracting a premier coach for years. Penn Sate won't have that problem and will have no problem getting almost any coach they want right out of the gate.
