Something cool Michigan is doing

  • They are un-retireing numbers and putting a legendary patch on the jerseys for special numbers. They did this with #21 last year and are doing more this year. I think that's pretty cool!

What would our legendary numbers be?

    31-22-12-11?

  • That is pretty neat, and could be a nice recruiting tool. I would imagine a hotshot DB recruit would love to wear Charles Woodson's 21. Pretty neat idea I think.

I just don't see it flying at PSU with the traditionalist aspect of our uniforms, but cool idea though.

  • I saw that article. Kind of sad that I only had ever heard of two of their honored players and one was only because he was the POTUS and not because of his accomplishments on the football field.

They have a good chucnk of players I'd consider legendary, which ones did they pick?

  • Desmond Howard, Gerald Ford, Bennie Oosterbaan and Ron Kramer will be honored. Tom Harmon and the Wistert brothers (?) are the only other players that have had their numbers retired.

Edit: I know they've had great players. I was surprised these guys represent their "ring of honor" or whatever they call it at UM.

  • Legend-type #'s for those who don't know.

#1- typically reserved for our game changing receiver, like Anthony Carter, Braylon Edwards, etc.

#2- normally reserved for our top DB ala Charles Woodson

#21- reserved for our top receiver like Desmond Howard or Junior Hemingway

#47-Oosterbaan was a 3X AA in football and 2X AA in basketball, All Big 10 in baseball and won a national title as a coach

#48-Gerald Ford, obvious president and won 2 national titles as a player

#87- Ron Kramer, 3X AA at Michigan and in the Pro Football HoF.

Did you guys bring back the tradition of #1? that actually pissed me off when Rich Rod did away with that. Michigan had was always known for having the best pro-style offense in the country, churning out WRs, Lineman, and QBs like we did with linebackers and Dlineman and he just came in and blew it all away like it never existed.

I think he means Split End (#1) vs. Flanker (#21), which is how I understood the tradition.

lol Not sure, before Desmond our top WR's generally wore #1 but then last year Hemingway was given #21 to honor Desmond so I'm not sure how that works.

I think we can go 10-3 or 11-2 but we won't really know until that first game. I could probably give you a better answer after week 1, if we can show some strength upfront on D then I think we can win our division, it should be interesting.

We'll bring back the #1 only if there's a receiver worthy of it, Hoke was saying that he doesn't expect a #1 this season but one could be given it later down the road. The problem with RR is that he didn't even know about the #1 legacy and tried giving it to a freshman CB, needless to say, that didn't fly to well with our fanbase.

You have to be able to score, to run up the score. They have One (1) offensive threat, their QB, and then Stoneburner.

  • That is pretty cool. For some reason though, I thought the size of the patch was a bit ugly and big last year, especially on Junior Hemmingway's jersey during the Notre Dame game. If they could make it a bit better looking, I would be fully on board (even as a Spartan!) cool

That QB is also a weakness, if that was possible. Threat with the legs but so far liability with arm.

3 loses? I figure Bama is a really tough game... but I am not sure your division or crossovers are going to be that tough.... MSU lost their QB, ND sucks, and the Bucks have a QB who passes out in the shower after loses....
