Not trying to defend him, but how does a 12 yr old go into Lasch and take a shower? That just sounds strange.

With someone who had a key and did not know others were still around. I guess he did not realize that a few coaches work late.

I've been through, not directly but a family member, a case where a coworker was caught doing similar acts. In this case it was child pornography. Talking to my family member and coworkers when the news broke no one expected it or hjad any knowledge. I had met this person myself and there was nothing to know. In this case these people were closer to eachother than football coaches, and spent more time around eachother that the coaches, and they had no idea. IMO it is completely plausible for Joe and staff not to know. I know in this case, no one suspected anything until there was a federal investigation, which meant one of three things: drugs, sex, or taxes.

This is unfortunate and if true (innocent until proven guilty, we are in America) he deserves to rot in jail and the deepest corner of Hell. If not, I will feel bad for the man's name being dragged through dirt. However, I would implore that we do not assume Joe and the University had any idea about this. Him leaving after the incident is plausible, but in no way do i believe that a man with the stature and character of Joseph Paterno would cover this up and enable these actions. If so, may he face the same fate.

I absolutely agree with this. Say what you want about Joe, but he is a devout Italian-Catholic. This is intolerable behavior and he would have sent JS packing in a NY minute if he knew about it. No cover up.

That said, I realize the irony of Joe's behavior as a devout Catholic and the Vatican's behavior in protecting and covering up similar incidents with their own clergy sexually assaulting young boys and girls.

The latter is due to the church elders trying to keep it on the low down. The former is just a devout religious person who's faith doesn't tolerate deviate behavior.

Kind of a weird post, even from me. But I just agree with MTayl, that Joe is not the type of man to ignore moral turpitude.

  • Why does anyone think PSU knew about this and tried to cover it up, especially Joe Paterno. I can't imagine anyone would tolerate or sweep under the rug such disgusting behavior. Are you guys implying that PSU lied to the police? Only asking because its obvious that the police investigated this accusation in 98 and no charges were brought forth. So, unless someone from PSU witnessed the act as it was happening and lied to police about it, then how could anyone think PSU was covering it up? And who in their right mind would cover up for someone they witnessed molesting a young boy? I highly doubt Sandusky would have came out and told people what he was doing.

This story just makes me sick.

Apparently some hate Joe so much they assume the worst on everything and it's a joke. If you're going to throw out any accusation like that, do it with your REAL name and provide the proof. If not, it's worthless and nothing more than garbage. Nobody knows who knew what, when, and how 12 years ago....but they know certain people screwed up. BS, stop running your mouth like little girls unless you are 100% certain someone up there did something wrong. These aren't light accusations to be tossing around.

Well said. Let this go through the system and see what comes of it. And everyone coming with these theories that Joe or anyone else up there knew about this and covered it up, well that's all they are at this point, theories. Come up with all the stories that you want, fact is nobody at this point has any proof that anyone knew that anything was going on.

Regardless, this is still a sad day for PSU and will undoubtedly leave some sort of black eye on the program in some peoples eyes just because of these charges.

    the million dollar question:

Some of this happened while he was at PSU. Did anyone at PSU know? If so, who and what did they know?

That's the million dollar question as far as PSU is concerned.

It's kinda strange to think that anyone connected with the football program knew what transpired between Sandusky and a kid in a shower. I have suspected since this sordid episode became public that Joe canned Sandusky when he found out that something MIGHT POSSIBLY have been amiss at Second Mile. I sincerely doubt that Joe or anyone at PSU including the A.D. had definite knowledge that Sandusky was molesting kids and that they decided, "Oh well he's a good DCoord so we'll look the other way." But I do suspect that there were "whispers" or possible hints of impending police investigations, and at that point Joe pulled the plug on Sandusky. Or it's possible that Sandusky himself decided to get out of coaching before anything came to light and disgraced the himself and the program. The timeline of the known offenses (1996 and 1998) and Sandusky's retirement (end of 1999) coincide. I doubt if in 1999 anyone knew for CERTAIN what he was doing, but I am speculating that the PSU athletic department started to hear some things that were disturbing, and decided to cut him loose. It wasn't PSU's place to try and convict him of anything, but IF they heard of possible improprieties then they seem to have acted appropriately. What PSU and every other educational system has to fear is, what if they fire a guy or falsely accuse a guy, and it turns out that he really didn't do anything at all? It's a fine line that educators and people who work with kids everywhere have to walk....trying to do the best they can to protect kids without creating "lynch mobs" that could ruin a man/woman who could be totally innocent.

This whole situation is so sad and disgusting. If he's guilty, he'll get what's coming to him for sure. And what I just wrote is 100% my OWN speculation...no facts whatsoever to back it up.

"Sources also tell The Patriot-News that head coach Joe Paterno will not be charged."

just FWIW. In my opinion, it's house cleaning time. Spanier, Curley, Joe, everyone. This is a complete disgrace. Joe reported it up the chain that's true, but he could have, you know, called the police.

Why didn't the Graduate Assistant and his father go straight to the Police instead of reporting to Paterno? I don't care what the protocol is for reporting to the chain of command. If a crime is committed go directly to the police not the head coach.

There are 8 victims referenced in the grand jury report. One was molested in the shower, others were showered with. I am not going into the details because, frankly, it is sickening. Literally, I feel sick right now.

The article I saw said Sandusky washed [inappropriate touching] the kid while in the shower, so I would say it is both.

"During the investigation, older allegations from 1998 surfaced as well. In the older case, Penn State police investigated inappropriate touching in a shower."

Either way, I don't really think it matters which is more true.

Former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky indicted on felony charges of sex crimes against minors

Sandusky was indicted by a grand jury on multiple counts including involuntary deviate sexual intercourse of someone under 16, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault of someone under 16, indecent assault of someone under 13, and corruption of minors.

Read the AG file if you want to know what was originally reported and Curley and Schultz are trying to cover up. It'll make you want to kill the man and/or get sick, so I warn you details are graphic.

Joe needs to make some sort of announcement tomorrow, get clear of this.

When Joe reported it and then nothing happened - he didn't do the right thing IMO.

He should have gone to the proper authorities and not just passed the buck. That's what men of courage and resolve do - not just brush it off and not wonder what ever happened.

It's no use. These people expected Joe to put the cape on and ruin the life of a friend and colleague based on hearsay. What he did was immoral because he didn't press on and push for more when investigations turned up nothing. It's an extremely sensitive subject but people think he should have risked it all by dragging several people through the mud based on hearsay. Paterno was supposed to do the job of the DA, police, athletic director, school president, judge, and jury.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.
