There will be backlash from idiots like Mark May who will criticize PSU no matter what. Other than that, as long as we don't make it personal, everyone will understand. You will hear a lot of "It shouldn't have come to this, but it is understandable." We almost all feel the same way. Damage done to PSU will be next to zero, short term.
Long term, assuming a successful hire, you will see much renewed interest from fans. I know I have refused to attend games this year due to Joe, and I will be back at the Beav once an outside hire is made. Can't wait. If we are successful again, you won't see any seas of Crimson anymore at Beaver Stadium. STEP will be much more successful minus Joe Paterno, imo.

May shouldn't even comment on it. He has been on Paterno's case for years. I can't imagine him saying anything else but its about time.
You will get the old school guys like Mustberger doing his "I can't believe it came to this" deal, but for the most part, everyone else will say a "sleeping giant is about to awaken" depending on who the hire is.

Yeah, same here, bills. I chatted with a few major contributors to the University about this after a few games last year, primarily after the debacle vs. Illinois on Homecoming and they all said things were in motion and like previously mentioned, it will all come down to timing. The timing wasn't right with the whole situation, hence why we are here today with Joe still our head coach. The time will come and hopefully sooner rather than later and by sooner I mean after this season.

?? @ This
Comm/Tiddy/Driver:
You guys are all friendly handle names that I'm glad to see on this site and this will likely be my new home, but if not for sharing info you can't get otherwise... what do we come here for - you guys have some inklings and have to balance it for one reason or another, but...
What are the key differences - those aren't state secrets right - I mean we know that: Joe wants to stay - and it's implicit some PTB don't want him to. so...

Comm can probably offer more specifics than I could...
But from what I hear... - the timing is good based on the options at the top of the list to replace Joe, which was not the case last year. That could mean Meyer, Golden, or someone else. - not that contracts mean very much (b/c they don't with Joe), but allowing Joe's contract to run its course will help from a PR standpoint with the BOT...who is heavily PR sensitive. - preliminary discussions have already occurred between Meyer and Spanier. That has been confirmed by more than one place. - as others have mentioned, finances will play a large role. The myth that Joe's presence will always pay the bills is finally dwindling.
With all that said, I heavily doubt that Spanier and the BOT would mount a type of 'forced' resignation. Joe will need to give some amount of consent. If he absolutely refuses, the contract will likely become a year-to-year deal until either Joe agrees to step aside or expires. The level of urgency should be higher depending on how seriously interested certain candidates are, but Joe ultimately holds the power.

thanks for the reply. all seems logical.
The question I have is how certain is this Urban Meyer meeting. I am always skeptical such secrets of such a huge name can be kept and there's not been any reporting on it other than rumors, right?

If Jay got the job, there would be tremendous uproar and PSU would lose alot of support. I don't think there is a chance at that happening. Also, if I'm Joe, I wouldn't want my son replacing me.
