So, When Joe is gone....???

  • POV said...

There will be backlash from idiots like Mark May who will criticize PSU no matter what. Other than that, as long as we don't make it personal, everyone will understand. You will hear a lot of "It shouldn't have come to this, but it is understandable." We almost all feel the same way. Damage done to PSU will be next to zero, short term.

Long term, assuming a successful hire, you will see much renewed interest from fans. I know I have refused to attend games this year due to Joe, and I will be back at the Beav once an outside hire is made. Can't wait. If we are successful again, you won't see any seas of Crimson anymore at Beaver Stadium. STEP will be much more successful minus Joe Paterno, imo.

May shouldn't even comment on it. He has been on Paterno's case for years. I can't imagine him saying anything else but its about time.

You will get the old school guys like Mustberger doing his "I can't believe it came to this" deal, but for the most part, everyone else will say a "sleeping giant is about to awaken" depending on who the hire is.

May shouldn't comment on it, but he will. He will be the first to question the integrity of the school for forcing out an icon. It is his schtick, so he will be his usual contradictory fool. The poor, stupid sPitter.

Yeah, same here, bills. I chatted with a few major contributors to the University about this after a few games last year, primarily after the debacle vs. Illinois on Homecoming and they all said things were in motion and like previously mentioned, it will all come down to timing. The timing wasn't right with the whole situation, hence why we are here today with Joe still our head coach. The time will come and hopefully sooner rather than later and by sooner I mean after this season.

What was wrong with the timing last year, and what will be substantially different about the timing this year?

    Urban Myer!

Lock it! Either that or Chris Peterson.

  • I just hope we lock up a premier level coach prior to the announcement. Really dreading going through a debacle like Michigan.

You guys are all friendly handle names that I'm glad to see on this site and this will likely be my new home, but if not for sharing info you can't get otherwise... what do we come here for - you guys have some inklings and have to balance it for one reason or another, but...

What are the key differences - those aren't state secrets right - I mean we know that: Joe wants to stay - and it's implicit some PTB don't want him to. so...

  • I thought Joe said he wants to coach 4 or 5 more years, if true you know Joe won't go without a fight.

The more the Urban Meyer rumor is spread throughout the media outlets and our collective minds, the less likely it will happen IMO.

If I had to guess, the admin could use Joe's contract running out at the end of this season as an excuse to get rid of him and "cover up" him possibly ultimately being forced out. Not saying that's how it could actually happen but it could end up that way.

Also, like already mentioned, Urban Meyer had just retired last year and it would've been pointless to pursue him at that time and made Urban look really bad. By January of 2012, he will be retired for about a year and is probably getting the itch to come back and coach. He seems to be genuinely interested in the PSU job. Some people worry about his "health" and "personal" issues if he comes to PSU, but I'm honestly not concerned about them. I think the environment at PSU is much more friendly and family oriented, which was one of the reasons why he retired once (to be closer to his family).

Like some have already posted in this thread, I don't think Joe will go down easy and a decision won't be made unless the admin has a guy pretty much ready to sign on the dotted line. That's the best way to handle this situation, IMO.

Comm can probably offer more specifics than I could...

    But from what I hear...
    - the timing is good based on the options at the top of the list to replace Joe, which was not the case last year. That could mean Meyer, Golden, or someone else.
    - not that contracts mean very much (b/c they don't with Joe), but allowing Joe's contract to run its course will help from a PR standpoint with the BOT...who is heavily PR sensitive.
    - preliminary discussions have already occurred between Meyer and Spanier. That has been confirmed by more than one place.
    - as others have mentioned, finances will play a large role. The myth that Joe's presence will always pay the bills is finally dwindling.

With all that said, I heavily doubt that Spanier and the BOT would mount a type of 'forced' resignation. Joe will need to give some amount of consent. If he absolutely refuses, the contract will likely become a year-to-year deal until either Joe agrees to step aside or expires. The level of urgency should be higher depending on how seriously interested certain candidates are, but Joe ultimately holds the power.

  • I just wonder if Joe is truly hanging on for the sake of his son keeping a job and *possibly* having a LONG SHOT at getting the PSU job when he's gone?

If Jay got the job, there would be tremendous uproar and PSU would lose alot of support. I don't think there is a chance at that happening. Also, if I'm Joe, I wouldn't want my son replacing me.

If all this is true, I would say the odds are much greater than 25% that Joe returns. Barring heath concerns, I don't ever see him giving consent. Someone at some point is going to have to man up.

thanks for the reply. all seems logical.

The question I have is how certain is this Urban Meyer meeting. I am always skeptical such secrets of such a huge name can be kept and there's not been any reporting on it other than rumors, right?

I've had it confirmed to me by 2 different individuals who usually have reliable knowledge with these types of things. Both have the occasional ear of Spanier. It was also confirmed by the wig over on BWI. He typically wouldn't make such an assertion without definitive knowledge. The extent of the discussions is up for debate, but the meeting took place while UM was in town to interview Mauti.

Let me add on that I'm also not raising my hopes at this point. Signs are encouraging, but they have been several times before and yet, here we sit.

If that happens we should have a pool for how long it takes before FJP kills somebody in pure frustration.... I'd say over under is 6 minutes chairshot

Actually, part of me wants to see it happen so I can say I was right and ask everyone to apologize to me for my dislike towards Fredo. Then I'll go off the handle and call up the NLC and say I'm finally done with the program.

Plus if Jay Paterno goes bye-bye I need to rename the site from FireJayPa to something else. I have a few domains registered in case of emergency, but I like the domain name.
