Last year things were nearly in place but a few steps that needed to happen didn't.

Timing in relation to our potential next head coach is setting up to be perfect for this year, however.

I'd put the odds of Joe returning at less than 25 percent.

    Wow comm,

Good to see you over here as I just made the leap from TAP to here.

So, your post is scintillating... care to elaborate on last year and your 25% prediction for next?

Agree, and I'd say much less than that..........................

  • I don't want to hear the Meyer talk. Don't get me wrong as I'm all for it, but I'm not getting my hopes up on that one. No way, not gonna happen. I can't hear you....lalalalalalala with hands over ears.

  • He should retire right after the Rose bowl against Oregon. Oops, timewarp. Any day now then.

    Jon,
Cool - think you'll like it here.
I got burned last year when I posted the Bradley to Pitt near-happen as a done deal. If you recall I made a post apologizing profusely and said I'm not gonna post anything that's not 100 percent anymore.
So I try not to relive last year. ;)
Like Driver said about the percentage being less the only reason why I have it UP at 25 percent is because Joe won the power play last year. I'd be VERY surprised if Joe is our coach next year but then again, I was very surprised last offseason.

It's just a damn shame that Joe has so much say in the situation (which I think he has earned but it's time right now) and that the administration lets him walk all over them. I know all the AD and University see is $$$$ and as long as Joe's around, they will continue to bring in big bucks but when is enough is enough? Imagine the money we could bring in with some fresh minds on the coaching staff that are actually exciting to watch and take risks during the game. People of all sorts would flock to Happy Valley even if they can't get into the game. I honestly don't think it's going to be as bad as some make it out to be when Joe's gone. That of course depends on who the hire is.

Interesting. So basically if Bradley had gotten the Pitt job, Joe would have retired?

The safest way for the BOT to best guarantee themselves solid footing after a transition is to have an organized plan and universally accepted successor in place before any announcement is made. As comm stated, the timing in relation to that successor is a huge issue...and that timing is far more advantageous this year than last year for many reasons. Basically, everything is in order for an efficient transition come January...BUT...nothing is 100% assured with a man who has changed his mind and won the 'tug of war' several times before.

PSU doesn't like bad publicity. It thinks there would be a public outcry if it forced Joe out; it thinks the media would take a shot at PSU for doing this. FSU got short term backlash, then everything got quiet. Who cares if Joe wants to play tug of war? The fact of the matter, the program is a joke and isn't competitive against good teams. I think the public, except IndyNit and his fellow Paterno followers who think he deserves a pass, would understand. I think the media would applaud the decision as well.

Driver, you and comm are making me cautiously excited.

That being said, I'm not going to believe this until I hear the words at the PC. Maybe not even then...maybe not until we officially have a new HC.

The media would celebrate Joe. Who is really going to get outraged (other than IndyNit) about an 85 year old man being told to step aside? Especially if a media darling like Urban Meyer or Tony Dungy were to assume the reins. Also, not to bad mouth Tom Bradley, but I think Joe would be far more receptive of handing off the mantle to a guy like Urban Meyer than the supposed plan for Bradley in '08.

Yeah, same here, bills. I chatted with a few major contributors to the University about this after a few games last year, primarily after the debacle vs. Illinois on Homecoming and they all said things were in motion and like previously mentioned, it will all come down to timing. The timing wasn't right with the whole situation, hence why we are here today with Joe still our head coach. The time will come and hopefully sooner rather than later and by sooner I mean after this season.

  • I just don't see how this is that hard, I know they worry about their image, but his contract is done after this season... There is a difference between firing a legend and not resigning him because it us unsafe for him to continue coaching (devon smith anybody?)

Very valid point, ejb. Maybe letting Joe's contract run up is all part of the plan with the admin. We won't know until this off-season.

  • Make no mistake, Coach is still the captain of this ship. I have been doing what I do for a long time now and my loyalties still lie with the team AND with Coach. Let's hope level heads prevail............................

  • Hamilton, it is amazing how winning and top recruiting classes at FSU cures all negativity of getting rid of Bowden. Bowden also was undergoing prostate cancer treatments (not public at that time).

I am nearly certain that Joe had a few health issues that he was dealing with last year at Hershey. The backlash at PSU would be only for a few weeks, then it would be out of the media entirely as there are too many new stories in sports bigger than JoePa.

    PSUGrad91

  • Going to add a wrinkle.

If you looked around the stadium against ISU (or now pay attention against home cupcake #2), you'll notice that STEP wasn't near the success the AD hoped/projected. In particular, the intermediate seats, ($400 license) really undersold (there were HUGE empty sections).

Everyone is saying it is about money, well I agree with the posters that said a new coach will bring renewed interest. With a lot of unsold season ticket plans (they didn't really sell out, they just removed them and sold way more single game sets), watch the $$ train drive Joe out for a HC that can fill out the STEP orders, an especially tall order with the downgrade that is next years home schedule.

Agree with you with everything you said. That said, I don't think PSU will agree, at least, the higher ups. I don't think the backlash would be great. It would be less than Bowden received. Everyone knows its time for Joe to hang it up with exception of Joe himself, maybe Jay and Sue.

  • There will be backlash from idiots like Mark May who will criticize PSU no matter what. Other than that, as long as we don't make it personal, everyone will understand. You will hear a lot of "It shouldn't have come to this, but it is understandable." We almost all feel the same way. Damage done to PSU will be next to zero, short term.

Long term, assuming a successful hire, you will see much renewed interest from fans. I know I have refused to attend games this year due to Joe, and I will be back at the Beav once an outside hire is made. Can't wait. If we are successful again, you won't see any seas of Crimson anymore at Beaver Stadium. STEP will be much more successful minus Joe Paterno, imo.
