So Far...

  • I am up to the interception in the 2nd quarter.

    My notes at this point:

On WR screen to Robinson where he set the record, he received zero blocking. I actually thought the play was set up well, but Farrell and Felder didn't block anyone.

I saw the injury to Mauti, and rewound it about 5x. It is a clear chop block. RB wasn't rolling up, but what he did was turn his body so his back it the knee, to give the impression that it was a roll. Very smart play, but at the same time, very illegal. The way the knee snapped back, it's an ACL tear. If that is all it is, he'll be fortunate, but I can't see any NFL organization drafting him with 3 torn ACL's in his career. Will he get a look as a UFA? Potentially but he won't be able to really work out for the scouts in March and April. Gun to my head, I hope Mauti goes into coaching because I feel his football career could be over. I hope I'm wrong, but multiple ACL tears for any player are very rare to overcome and have the type of career we all think he could have.

Robinson is a baby. He's just scratching the surface of his ability. He is just now starting to learn how to high point the ball and control that 6-3 frame of his.

McGloin has come a LONG way. He went through 4 reads on the check to Zordich in the first quarter. Don't care what level, that's impressive and an awesome amount of coaching. Don't look now, but after saying he had no chance to be drafted, I think it's a lock that he gets picked in the later rounds, maybe as high as the 5th.

John Urschel is an NFL player. Another year in Fitz's program will just push him over the top. An OL guy with his ability and strength to go with his brains? There's not a scheme that he won't be able to pick up.

What we lose in Mauti is the leadership. We gain athleticism and speed with Hull. It's not a tradeoff I'd make, but there are some positives here, because I'm a big experience guy and you can't replace "having been there, done that". In terms of college schemes, Mauti has been there done that, Hull hasn't (as he showed on IU's 2 runs at the end of the first quarter where he overpursued, opening up that running lane on back to back plays).

I will pick back up after the 2 year old (soon to be 3) is out with her mother in a little bit. I lost the TV to Charlie and Lola.

  • Who do we have on the OL that's eligible to return next year?

    Urschel
    Smith
    Dieffenbach
    Howle
    Mangiro
    Gress

We'll be fine on the interior but concerned about depth at tackle spots

  • I think Smith, Gress, Urschel, Mangiro, Howle...Arciadano?

Offensively, as of right now, we should be ok at RB, WR, OL, TE.

Defensively, the only position that I think we're set in stone at and I feel good about is DE and LB.

  • Agree with everything you said except McGloin getting drafted. UDFA or CFL is my bet. I don't typically watch interior line play but BOB said Urschel would play on Sundays after spring practice. I was a little skeptical but maybe he was right. If he does, he'll have a long career barring injury.

I would agree with you, but this guy is running an NFL offense, with NFL plays, and reads. He's running the offense from the LOS. I am not a McGloin fan, but I gotta give it up, the fact he's running this offense, with efficiency, to me gives him a shot to get drafted. Does that mean he'll stick? no, absolutely not, but he's going to get a shot.

Hope you're right. It McGloin gets drafted, BOB will be able to hand pick his QB's going forward. How fortunate are we that Hack grew up a Penn State fan. Otherwise, he would not be coming next year no matter how much he likes BOB.

I didn't say he would go in the 5th, it's possible. Probable? no, I personally have him as a late 6th, 7th rounder.

Hull obviously steps in for Mauti's position. How bout Hodges spot? Is it a battle between Kline and Wartman? I'm concerned about our lack of depth at LB, next year. The secondary should be better than this year since we only lose Morris and the young guys should show tremendous improvement from their freshman to sophomore year.

We're going to have depth issues for a while going forward.

I personally would load up on OL, and DL spots, but we're going to be thin across the board in some areas such as LB, DB, RB.

Maybe 10-12 OL guys, 9 DL guys and then fill in the gaps. IMO, we need to be 2.5 deep at the OL spots when the sanctions fully hit.

  • I didn't think the RB had an illegal hit an Mauti. It looked like the RB just lost his balance and fell into him. Seemed more bad luck than malicious intent.

Nahh, he may get an invite to a camp. That will be about it IMO.

This is coming from someone who spent the last two years trying to debunk the many Moxie myths. Heck, I can type with a straight face that his performance this year hasn't surprised me all that much. He's having a very good year and has improved quite a bit. But your NFL scouting report reads something like this.

Lacks size (6'1 on a good day)
    Below average NFL arm strength
    Average accuracy
    Can't make all the throws
Slow, not good at avoiding pressure, cannot make plays with his feet at all
Does not throw well on the run, noticeable decrease in arm strength and accuracy on the move
Will force throws from time to time

So basically you have a QB with well below average measurables, who can't make plays when things break down, doesn't excel under pressure in general, has lots of bad film before this year....

On the plus side he is generally accurate when he has time to throw, now has experience in a true pro style offense, seems to be pretty adept at picking things up, seeing the field and making the proper read MUCH better this year, etc etc etc.

He will get a combine invite and that setting will not be ideal for McGloin. Bottom line, why pick a QB with no NFL physical skills who has literally zero chance to ever be an NFL starter?

Again, McGloin is a good college QB this year, wish he was around for another year, but he just doesn't have NFL skills.

I take it you haven't watched the replay. He jumps with both legs and is aiming at his knee. He didn't fall, he didn't roll, he dove at his knee.

People said the same thing about Brady Quinn when arguing he should be the top pick in the draft....
