So Allen Robinson can jump

  • Mel had this in the twitter thread, but I don't know how many saw it there.

I had to watch these videos a few times to make sure those are 10 foot hoops. I think my favorite is the last one.

    Holy Schnikes.

  • Prob what liked most about him when we were recruiting him.

His vertical will prob be around 40 when he goes to the combine, which is insane.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

    psu2013

  • This is why I don't expect him to be around in 2014. Kid will test through the roof. He runs a decent 40 and he'll be an easy first round selection. Someone with his size, vertical, and rapidly increasing strength will be incredibly difficult to cover.

Best WR we have had in a loonngggg time. Engram maybe? JJ? Definitely better than Butler or Johnson.

He's got all the tools, he just needs to get more consistent. I have no doubt Hixon can get him there. Lord knows in OB's offense he'll have plenty of chances.

Somewhere (but not at the combine) Justin Brown weeps.

so much fun to watch our guys develop as athletes.... The Spring Game will be interesting to see who has taken big steps. I also wonder what the defense will look like.

agreed....Fitz is really starting to kick in and it's showing with the most recent testing. No matter the absolute validity of these times...they are using the same people and same systems and guys have definitely gotten faster and stronger since their first testing times last spring. Sky is the limit for some of these younger guys that are already special athletes like James, Amos, ARob, Lynch, and DSmith.

    Cool videos. Thanks for posting.

It reminds me of a (back in the) day in the gym and watching OJ McDuffie hammer down some dunks. He was easily the most athletic WR I ever saw play at PSU. Robinson looks right up there.

I love the guy, but unless he gets faster, he will not be 1st Rd pick.
On PSU fied, which is faster than the Combine field, he runs 4.6 .
A WR that runs 4.6 will not be 1st round pick.

working on sprinting technique can take a lot off of the 40. You also don't need a 4.3 to be a first round wr. Dez ran a 4.5 and was a first rounder. Not saying Robinson is on that level. Just saying

  • I think Robinson's NFL comp is Larry Fitzgerald, he should have similar numbers at the combine.

Larry Fitzgerald ran the 40 in 4.63

I believe, Rice, Carter, Crabtree, Fitzerald, Boldin. Never broke 4.5 out of college.

A lot of times I think they should do the moving 40 yard dash. Start at 60 yards, and then time the final 40 yards. A lot of these 40 times greatly vary from how you start out of the gate. It can easily account for the difference between a 4.3 and a 4.6 40 - and that starting position isn't something that's replicated on a football field really. If you combine the shuttle runs and that running 40 time, I think it gives you a better idea of how explosive someone is.

A moving 40 gives a better idea of how explosive a guy is?? I'd argue the exact opposite....that gives you a better idea of what kind of track athlete you are, not football player. Explosiveness is all about quickness off the line for most positions on the field. The moving 40 shows absolutely nothing other than top end speed....the 40 shows the more important trait of quickness IMO

  • A. Rob is going to have a tough time winning any national awards next year with a new QB. Plus, there are a few other elite wide receivers in his same class who have much better career numbers like Sammy Watkins and marquise lee.

That's why I included the shuttle run, which I think does a better job than the 40 time in measuring how quick players are, and how much control over their body in those first 10 yards they have. The moving 40 tests how fast you are.

Nothing in the physical tests really show what kind of football player you are. That's not really the intent of the combine.

You start each play not moving though so I don't think a moving 40 time is all that important. The NFL guys wants to see how well you can get off the line and get to top end speed.

You're right. There will always be the exceptions. Jerry Rice (27 Tds his senior year & arguably the greatest wr of all time who had arguably the greatest QB throwing to him). Larry Fitzgerald. Generally, you give the exceptions that ar the hall of famers at their position. Hell Michael Jordan got cut from his JV team but does that mean guys that get cut on jv will prepare you to become hall of fame bball players - generally no.

But, usually, the rule is that if you run slower, you will not go in the first round. I can give you a list of reasons why ARob is not in the class of Fitz or Rice. But im not about to do that b/c i think he is an incredible player. Yet, anyone that is about to compare Arob to these two needs to take a step back. He had one good season. An incredible season, but next year his numbers will likely decrease. He might get better as a player but his numbers will likely fall. Or am i wrong on that too.

I can name many PSU players we all thought would be 1st Rd who didnt go. Recently, - Poz, Lee, Connor, D.Still. NFL execs put more emphasis on 40 time than they should & Rice, Fitz, C.Carter, Boldin are all good examples. But lets face it, speed counts. I think ARob is better than Bryant Johnson, who went in the 1st Rd. But Johnson didnt have the career Arizona expected. A.Boldin ran slower 40 & he went in 2nd Rd the same year to Arz & had much better career than B.Johnson. Why did he go in the 2nd Rd, he had a slow 40.

We all expect PSU players to go earlier than they do, then they end up going later than we thought. Im not saying the NFL execs are smarter, but they tend to put more emphasis on time. I dont expect Alex Kinney to get drafted highre than ARob b/c he runs a faster 40. But if Arob expects to be 1st Rd, get faster. I also think he has good hands but he could get more consistent. He did have more drops than he should during the year. His body is NFL ready. Reading defenses & Route running will only get better with Hixon & OB. I hope he does get 1st Rd & leaves early. But dont give the NFL a reason to avoid drafting you in the 1st Rd. If he runs 4.5 I expect he will get drafted in 1st Rd. If he runs 4.6, 4.7 he is hoping someone likes him enough to disregard his 40 time. And you dont want to do that.

You think all of those PSU players didn't go in the 1st, because of their 40 times? Interesting...

I don't know whether ARob will go in the 1st or not. However, I do know that teams that draft based off of combine numbers and 40 times tend to suck, so maybe it would be for the best for him to run a "slow" 40 time and be drafted by a team that actually watches film.

No i think all those players were thought to be 1st Rd talent & didnt go in the 1st Rd.

The difference between the Big 10 & SEC is speed.
More skill guys get drafted higher (not necessarily have a better career) from SEC than other conferences b/c speed.

Example. Evan Royster was the leading rusher all-time at PSU. He went in the 6th Rd. Why?
he ran a 4.65 40 at the combine, with a high of 4.75.
If he ran a 4.4, he would have been drafted in the 1-2nd Rd.
He then came back & ran 4.53 at the Pro Day on a quick track.

So yes, PSU Pro Day #s are faster. Yes, 40 yard time counts. And yes if you run slow, your draft stock will drop. I dont see how this is breaking news.
