    A pretty smart PSU fan pointed out to me that since 1994, the best PSU teams have all had dominating presence on the edge . . . . C. Brown . . . M. Haynes . . . Tamba . . . Maybin . . . .

It would be nice to see the lightbulb go off in Crawford's game this autumn . . . Especially with all the experience we have in the Back 7.

Evans had an equally dominating season in 2007 than Maybin did in 08.. That led to a 9-4 campaign

    08 Maybin 20 TFL, 12 sacks, 3 FF

    07 Evans 21.5 TFL, 12.5 sacks, 5 FF

Which year have we played Iowa where we haven't been the better team? Every year we play them we have more talent then them and are the better team.

Last year we were not the better team. 2009 our offensive line was awful, their d-line was the best kept secret in the country.. 2008 was just a trap game, qb recovering from concussion, weather was not favorable, away game..

I expect that we will have an outstanding defense this year that will keep us in most every game. The only question in my mind is "Can we put points on the board ?" Lots of intangibles in that regard, but I keep hearing good things, hence my optimism. I say that based on the things I see, hear and know.

    Add to that, lots of people want to make sure this is a special year.........................coffee. . . . . . . . . . . . . ....................................................lol

Don't tease me with that last sentence.

A., we had more talent then Iowa last year.

    B. Our Oline is rarely good as they aren't a well coached unit.

    C. 2008 was no trap game. Ferentz outcoached Joe, AGAIN. According to Joe and the medical staff DC was 100%. If he wasn't, that was our coaches fault for playing him (well, we all know there is a lot more to it than that), you realize Iowa played in the same weather we did, right? It's all excuses. We were outcoached in that game and usually are by Ferentz.

Our defensive line was facing injury problems, our offensive line talent was young and they had one of the best defensive lines in the country. They were much better than us in the trenches and that's pivotal in the game of football. Talent is one thing, but that team had a lot of senior leaders and underachieved last year outside the PSU game. If talent was everything, why even play the games?

I agree talent isn't everything. Iowa does more with less, their lines (both O and D) are very well coached and that is a major part of the battle. I understand that upsets happen but we should not be owned by Iowa the way we are.

I'm gonna throw it a different angle:

I am going to go the psychological route and predict based on attitude. I think this team has a ton of fire under their brims do to the record last year. I think the Alabama game win or loss is going to show a lot of heart from this team. We seem to have better leadership, and going into a season like that, hopefully it leads to playmakers reinforcing it. The real test won't be the amount of talent going into the terrible three, it will be if PSU is 8 and 1 or even 9-0 for that matter will the team remain as levelheaded and determined as they do right now. Eyes on the prize baby cool

    ForTheGlory90

  • From a leadership standpoint...you have Green and Redd in the backfield...both just want to win and both play hard (both better hold on to the ball!!!) You have Moye who seems to have stepped it up out wide. OL not sure who is leading there. Rob has a year under his belt and I expect that to pay off a bit more in terms of leadership and confidence.

On the defesive side...Mauti is leader and the center of this defense. All of the DB's are multiple year starters and hopefully Still can lead by example up front. I know the trend online is to say woe is PSU and boohoo all of the time, but this team does have some good pieces to the puzzle. There isn't a team on the schedule that isn't replacing a key piece somewhere, so we can stop with the question marks only exist at PSU stuff already. Most see PSU has question marks and they are valid ones, but so are the other squads PSU will be lining up against. I almost like having a murders row at the end because this team could really have some momentum going into those games. This idea that I need to warn folks PSU may lose is foreign to me...and it's pretty much BS. Of course they may lose, but nobody had PSU as the favorite for the last 2 BT titles, so I'm not sure how this team can or should be written off. It's ok to say I think PSU has a shot no matter how far some will go to say otherwise....because they do have a shot. If those spouting out they had no shot really believed it...they wouldn't pay for anything or really bother to care IMO. It's almost an act at this point.

  • Why do people think we will beat Illinois?! They manhandled us last year.

    jayer

  • Don't watch PSU play them if you know the outcome I guess. Just in case you didn't know this....last years results don't win games the next year. In college football last year pretty much means nothing unless both teams are lining up with the same exact teams...which they are not. They are replacing 4-5 players on defense and a home game are two reasons why. PSU had a frosh QB out there last year who tossed a pick 6.

    Wow.............................(nuff said)
Didn't Illi have a young QB?? .....................and wasn't he exceptional! That might have a little bearing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The FACT that they whipped us badly LAST YEAR does have bearing for the next season..........................

  • LaJolla I totally agree with you. If you can't be optimistic about this team then why bother. I also feel the dire prophecies are somewhat of an act. Why follow sports if you can't believe in the " well if this happens and this happens then maybe" scenario. Penn State has had much more recent success than not. One bad year should not turn fans back into the they have to show me first attitude. 2005 sure. Pittsburgh Pirate fan sure. I just don't understand how people make these negative predictions and still enjoy the season. They have painted themselves in a corner where at least a small part of them is rooting for their predictions and not the team.

  • So bet on them since you think it's a lost cause...I don't. How did they beat us last year when we killed them the year before? Ooops...boom goes that theory.

    1994 Penn State 63 Ohio State 14
PSU lost to OSU in both 93 and 95.

Last year Illinois killed us in the trenches and PSU had 13 key players injured. This year PSU has the decided advantage in the trenches.
