Slot Receiver

  • If Smith can't go....I think Eugene Lewis, Belton in some situations (i know he is at TB now), Kenney, and i'm sure they can figure something out with the TE and WR options

    Thoughts?

  • in all honesty, it wouldnt surprise me if Belton is somehow moved back to WR after the end of spring practice or throughout the summer sessions. shrug

I think it's more likely we'll see Drake back on offense.

  • With the potential to see mostly 2 TE sets... is a really good slot WR that needed? If Drake is a good fit at CB, he's going to be very much needed there. If Belton is a good fit at RB, he's going to very much be needed there (he'll probably be the #2 back behind Redd, Lynch #3).

Smith was never a slot receiver anyway. He lined up outside the vast majority of the time. I wouldn't be surprised to see some bigger bodies inside, much like PSU did in the past couple years. I'm not sure size will really play a roll in where they line up.

  • I'm still on the bandwagons for Robinson and Z too (despite little reason to be beyond limited Robinson action and Z's high school stats and tape). I like the possibilities here.... Lewis looks outstanding too. TB is thin = leave Belton there....

  • I wonder if Robinson will be given a look at safety in the spring, since many thought that's were he would start.

  • I think Kenney will get first shot and will pleasantly surprise people.

  • Just a wild thought, if D. O'Brien ends up at PSU, and PJ's grades are in order - any chance Bolden could/would move to WR or DB?

    Nit_wit

  • I think Lewis figures to be a Z receiver along with Kearsey. Don't see him going to the slot.

JMO, but Bolden doesn't look athletic enough to move to another position effectively.

Agree, he'd get demolished if he caught one over the middle.

  • Kenney. It's his natural position. A position he will excel at. I'm very excited to see him play there. His quickness and vision just scream slot.

  • Kenney will get first dibs, IMO. The Robinson will follow suit in all likelihood.

  • I think kenney could be in for a big year.

I couldn't agree more. Bolden does not have the athletic/physical ability to play WR or DB on the BCS level.

I'm optimistic Kenney can have success in the new offense. He is one of the guys I'm most looking forward to seeing this spring and heading into next season.

Actually in OB's ( Patriots) scheme a slot is very important in their two TE packages.

If you notice this package only rarely lines up both TE's in the traditional double tight formation.

They initially line up their speed TE ( Hernandez at NE) as a back with the "slot"guy (Welker) as a wing. They motion their "F" tight end to either side as either a wing (strong) or a tight split TE weak. The slot guy then moves outside or inside the "F". This will quickly get boring if I go through all the combinations and formations, but there are quite a few.

The point of the scheme is to create first, a run/pass delema, second is to put great pressure on the under coverage match-ups....This is a short quick/attack undercoverage match-up scheme.

Simply who covers your 6-6 270# TE, who covers your fast 6-4 240# "F", and who covers your speed slot ?...These guys run all kinds of drags, outs, smash, hook, fade routes at about 6 yards....and they can run their one back behind power to either side.

Pretty complicated departure from an old double TE attack.

That's why I think DOB will be perfect for this offense!
