Short Term DL Plans

  • I have full faith in this staff and the choices they make. When I look at the roster including 2013, there is an obvious need at DL. Of all of the guys who flipped, Pollard and Webb hurt the most IMO. My thought is if the coaches are not pushing to fill the position, they have something in mind. Would it be a young guy has shown them something or a OL switching to DL. Anyone have any information to offer?

Actually allocation-wise our numbers stack up for an 85 man roster for the DL. We're holding 14 for next year (including those committed). 6 DTs, 8 DEs. You may want them 7 and 7, but that's about as good as you're going to get. Experience is light, that's for sure, but certainly not raw numbers.

  • Yes, DL depth overall is not awful. Did not clarify myself. No concern at DE. I was looking at DT beyond 2 likely starters this year. Who is the 3rd guy or who is going to step in after this year. IMO you know what you have at each position for the next 2-3 years. DT seems to be a big question.

  • Sean- new to board. I have been following your info for a long time. By far the best site for information. You make it hell to get anything done at work but glad to be on board. Your inside information is well worth the price.

  • This has been a good topic for discussion and I was in your camp until looking at roster and comparing to what they will be required to have next year with the 65 man limit kicking in.

Here is list of Scholarship players

92 Albert Hall DE FR 6-4/250
52 Brent Smith DE FR 6-2/240
94 Evan Schwann DE FR 6-6/225
48 Jordan Kerner DE SO 6-4/239
95 Carl Nassib DE SO 6-6/239
98 Anthony Zettel DE SO 6-5/253
31 Brad Bars DE JR 6-3/254
    86 C.J. Olaniyan DE JR 6-3/248

91 DaQuan Jones DT SR 6-3/324
84 Kyle Baublitz DT JR 6-5/287
88 Tyrone Smith DT JR 6-4/251
99 Austin Johnson DT FR 6-4/297
72 Brian Gaia DT FR 6-3/271
53 Dereck Dowrey DT FR 6-3/311

Not a lot of experience at DT, which is my concern, not so concerned at DE as there is talent and some experience. This list is from the PSU website, does not list which are scholarship versus walk on. I believe all DT but Smith are Scholarship.

Hall, B. Smith, Nassib and T. Smith aren't on scholarship.

  • that is what I thought, but the numbers work out to about with expected numbers for DL under sanctions of 10 to 12. The loss of the kid to RU hurts as does the loss of Webb this year.

We will have 14 DL this year. 8 DEs, 6 DTs. Ideally you want 7 of each under and 85 scenario. Numbers-wise we are absolutely fine.

  • My opinion we are shorter on the interior of the offense line than we are at defensive tackle. We have only four guys who are currently either freshmen or sophomores on the interior of the offensive line. IMO we can't afford to move Alosi from the offensive line to the defensive line - he can play either offensive guard or offensive tackle.

IMO The guys that need to be starting on the defensive line are Barnes, Olanijan, Jones, and Zettel. I realize that Zettel is a little on the light side but he has a tremendous motor and seems to be able to shed blockers like no one else on the team. If Baublitz is one of our starting defensive tackles, we are in trouble IMO.

Yes but it is really easy to kick tackles down, especially someone like Hartman who could easily be a floater.

I really hope Zettel can add weight to get up to 270 atleast.....yea i haven't been impressed with Baublitz but he's only been playing DT for a year. Austin Johnson is the wildcard and who knows about Dowrey.

Zettel is just too light to be an every down guy. I mean, the guy is a bit undersized as a SDE... an every down DT is just not realistic.
