Scrimmage Review: A look at the Lions heading into game week

  • Here's a quick look at the team coming out of Friday's scrimmage. Sorry about the tardiness of the report, I didn't have much to go on yesterday and had a function this afternoon to attend to. Without further delay, here is how things look going into game week.

    - All three quarterbacks saw action with the first team on Friday. Onlookers said that Kevin Newsome had the best scrimmage of the three, marching the team downfield against the first team defense on the scrimmage's first drive. He did more damage with his legs on the drive, putting together some solid runs as well as some nice mid-range passes.

The big story of his week in practice has been the charge that Newsome has made for the starting job. A few contacts who said that we would likely see Matt McGloin as the starter last week have now changed their position, stating that Newsome will likely be the guy seeing the first snaps against Youngstown State.

The biggest thing that Newsome has improved upon is his consistency with his mid-range balls. He is easily the biggest threat of the three with his legs, and has gotten ample looks with the zone read out of the shotgun.

Robert Bolden was solid on Friday in his time with the first team, but Tom Bradley's defense threw a few different things at him that caused him to make some mistakes in the session.

McGloin was also 'solid' in the scrimmage, hooking up with Shawney Kersey for a touchdown against the second team 'D'. Sprung by a nice playaction fake by McGloin, Kersey made a nice grab on the play.

We're hearing that all three will see significant action next weekend if things go according to plan.

    - The best news of the day for the running backs, at least in the big picture, was the return of true freshman Silas Redd, who is getting over a minor knee sprain. He only saw limited action on Friday, but he only ended up missing about a week of action and indications are that he'll be back to full speed fairly soon.

Redd and walk-on Derek Day found the end zone during goal line work. First and second stringers Evan Royster and Stephfon Green have seen limited action in camp, including yesterday.

Both the first and second team fullbacks, Joe Suhey and Michael Zordich, were out of action with minor injuries on Friday. Both expect to be back at practice on Tuesday for game week. In their absence, true freshman Zach Zwinak got reps with the first team.

    - The running game as a whole was a positive on Friday, with the first team offensive line coming together for one of its better showings this fall. The unit remained the same as it has been, with Quinn Barham at left tackle, DeOn'Tae Pannell at left guard, Doug Klopacz at center, Stefen Wisniewski at right guard and Lou Eliades at right tackle.

The close eye continues to be on the left guard spot, where Johnnie Troutman had a very good week of practice. We expect to see both he and Pannell share some time next Saturday.

    - The tight end situation continues to be the same, with Garry Gilliam getting first team reps in Andrew Szczerba's absence.

    - In addition to Kersey's touchdown grab, other wideouts who impressed on Friday were Graham Zug and Justin Brown. Those two, in addition to returning starter Derek Moye, should see most of the action with the first team when the season starts.

Redshirt freshman wideout Christian Kuntz will likely miss three weeks with his knee injury. Luckily things weren't as bad as originally feared. He'll have some follow up tests but in all likelihood surgery will not be required.

    - The cornerstone of the defense continues to be the defensive line, and the unit had an aggressive scrimmage on Friday. The front four has been described as 'simply nasty.'

The first team continues to be Jack Crawford and Eric Latimore at the ends, with Ollie Ogbu and Devon Still inside. Kevion Latham and Pete Massaro have worked in on the edge, and James Terry and Jordan Hill are still the backups inside.

The two starting ends have drawn praise for their play in camp, and have been dominant at times. Eric Latimore doesn't get much press, but he's up over 275 pounds and has stayed healthy for the first time in his career.

    - The six linebackers we spotlighted earlier this week have been sharing reps with the first and second teams. Michael Mauti and Nate Stupar have both played well at the Sam, Bani Gbadyu and Gerald Hodges saw reps at the Fritz on Friday and Chris Colasanti, Mike Yancich and Mauti have all gotten work inside. Starters have still not been decided, but all six will see fairly meaningful action on Saturday regardless of who starts.

Sources say Ron Vanderlinden is pretty comfortable with the group of athletes that he has a the position.

    - Despite a few minor injuries in the secondary, the first team remains D'Anton Lynn and Stephon Morris on the corners and Nick Sukay and Drew Astorino at the safety spots. Lynn and Sukay both picked off passes in the scrimmage.

According to team sources, the nickel back hasn't been named officially, but Chaz Powell will likely get the nod at the position. Derrick Thomas has also returned to contact after missing some time, and he could also push Powell for the spot.

    - Specialists Collin Wagner and Anthony Fera worked on kicking off in live situations. It's still a toss-up as to who will be the go-to guy on Saturday, but onlookers say that Fera has the stronger leg. Fera also got work as the first team punter on Saturday, where they worked live with the punt team. All indications are that he'll be the guy this fall.

    • A point I forgot to add in the special teams, is that Stephon Morris and Chaz Powell are working as the first team gunners on the punt team.

      • Thanks Sean. I'm beginning to think that much of the information that has leaked about Bolden has motivated Kevin Newsome. In all the reports that we have seen, no one ever questioned Newsome athletic skills or knowledge of the playbook, but his consistency in passing was always of concern. Maybe he has shed the inconsistency and started to believe in himself.

I'm starting to look forward to next week.

          For the Glory...

Another area of great skepticism has been Newsome's leadership skills, or lack of same.

Apparently Bolden is a heck of a leader. I expect him to make the job his own in 2011, if not 2010.

            • I thought the most interesting part of the post was the kicking tidbit. I just assumed we'd see Wagner kicking and probably Fera as the starter. I didn't think Fera would actually have a legit push to be both.

I'm pretty sure Fera is battling Wagner for kickoffs. I think Wagner has FG/XP duties wrapped up for now.

I've heard conflicting things on Kevin Newsome's leadership ability. People have raved about his personality, he's a very likable kid who people kind of flock to, but at the same time I've heard people who say that he has rubbed some guys in the locker room the wrong way. His grasp of the playbook is OK, he had some trouble early last year but he should be able to run the offense sufficiently. I think it's just a matter of can he lead by example? Some have noted that he's a guy who has had to buckle down and take things a little more seriously. I guess we'll see over the next few weeks.

He had a great week of practice, though. Coming into it, I would have put him at No. 3 going into Youngstown, now I think we may see him first.

It's great to know you can be average or worse all summer, but as long as you're the incumbent and have a good week toward the end things will work out. I really dislike this.

                        • Itz - Newsome has been the starter since the spring...no matter what reports have said.

He will have to play his way out of the gig - or Bolden play his way into it - before any changes are made. That being said, I don't think Newsome will be the starting QB for PSU by year's end.

                          • I'm sort of with you here, Itz. Newsome set the bar low for himself with his early less-than-stellar play. Now he has one "good" week and he's being talked about as the starter. Hopefully it doesn't turn into a perpetual situation where since Newsome gets the majority of game time early on he then goes on to be the starter since he "has more experience" than Bolden.

Should be good for the 'Bama game that the guy who has had the most time with the playbook is actually playing moderately well. Just wonder what it means for the long-term...
