Screw the B1G

Dude, I hate the BIG. It has done nothing for PSU absent the research money. That said, I was showing if PSU decided to bolt, it would have an impact. The BIG would have to make some major changes. Not saying its going to happen, but saying if it did.

What's more important to PSU? What the BIG has done for PSU with regards to research money or what they haven't done for PSU with regards to athletics?

  • I feel your pain and understand the hatred. The punishments were too severe. Having said that it would not surprise me if someone on your board started a thread wanting to secede from the Union.....and from the state where the great Battle of Gettysburg was fought no less.

Not every team qualifies ... there is an academic requirement associated with it. Florida State wouldn't qualify; NC State wouldn't; all the Big East wouldn't; every SEC school sans Vandy wouldn't qualify; Kansas wouldn't qualify, neither would Iowa State, ... the list goes on.

    ND doesn't qualify

Actually, PSU needs the B1G more than ever because it is gonna help keep PSU above water on the budget. You have to consider that if this stands, There is no incentive for a kid to come for a least 3 years. There is really no incentive for this new coaching staff to stay or any kid on the roster. As an independent, you won't make it. Total kick to the nuts IMHO.

Just added $13M more on top of that ass-kicking. I say screw em. Let's go back to being an independent. We can schedule all over the country - BYU, Boise, Miami, ND, and go back to owning our own destiny....See how they like having absolutely no good school left to add to make it 12 again.

Join me in cancelling your Big Ten Network subscription. They won't show our games anyway. If PA and NJ go dark on the BTN, Delaney and his cronies will feel it.

  • The reason PSU has taken its medicine and not fought these sanctions is because they're scared of being boot from the AAU, Big Ten, and NCAA in general. The billions in research dollars are far greater than a hundred million or so in football penalties. Don't be stupid. This is an academic issue and your university officials are finally looking out for what is best for PSU. Fools.

You are thinking like football fans and not like scholars. Let those in charge lead you out of this, you'll be better off in the long run. Your university leaders aren't so narrow sighted.

ok first lets look at what your statement is wrong

1.) AAU could still give us the boot, there sanctions could be independent of the NCAA...
2.) DOE could still decertify us so that research money could be gone
3.) even if DOE doesn't decertify us, technically they could blacklist us for federal grants which would kill all those research dollars
4.) if the B1G wishes to keep us in as an academic institution they could (look at U of Chicago).

JMO, I think the B1G should have kicked us out a sports program...we are going to bring down the conferences strengthen of schedule for the next 20 years...All sports will suffer because of these sanctions...However, They should have kept us as a research institution based upon metric goals to reach with regards to research monies attracted.

    Lion_in_CBus

  • Your on crack. The B1G is standing right by your side at a time of dire need. All they are doing is taking your share of BOWL money that you can't contribute to and donate it to a charity that cares about abused children. I know it is tough....it is going to get worse before it gets better. The B1G will stand by you....your return will be much quicker with us by your side. This is not USC.....it is worse.

    Stay strong...

I think the Big Ten is above kicking you guys out. You'll recover quicker than 20 years. Still have the facilities, stadium, fans, and an environment to have a great program. It's not over.

    Agreed.

Much of this thread is stupid talk. The BIG wants PSU to be a strong, competitive program on the national stage. Within 10 years, there's no reason you shouldn't bounce back bigger and better.

The 20 years was hyperbole, but explain to me were the money is to fund our AD...all sports program will take a dive. The money just isn't going to be there...Its naive to think otherwise...Our endowment (in all likelihood) will be windled down to nothing after the DOE, the victims (rightfully so) and other organizations take their portion.

    Lion_in_CBus

  • It could of been worse and after a day of introspection I think this is pretty fair.

    1. No death penalty potentially over 4 years.
    2. Still on TV which coupled with scholarship reductions and bowl ban would of really drilled the program into the ground.
    3. Penn State cannot cut and burn their way within the athletic department to pay the fine.
    4. Although still a ways to go but this is likely the low point.
    5. Taking the universally accepted big hit with acceptance by your leaders will pay dividends with avoiding the losing end with more important battles ahead.

You'll still get TV money and a cut of the Big Ten $$ (except bowl money). You can still play games, sell tickets, food/drink amd memorabilia. I I think your endowment is over one billion. And i assume the alumni will still kick in money. PSU has more money than you think.

  • Swofford and the ACC would cut off their collective group of left nuts to somehow land PSU and ND.

Just remember that. Y'all might be down now, but you're still Penn State and you'll always be a big deal in college football.

  • It's hard to swallow the pill but we must. Leaving the Big Ten does nothing for us. Unfortunately we'll have to stare at both their logo and the ncaa logo at beaver stadium every game. We may be their bitch now, but if we stay strong, we will give the next generation of lions the ability to stand strong against them. I really think they are underestimating our strength

I do agree that PSU has a ton of money, I guess I should have phrased it this way...the point of the punishment is to re-prioritize football (and sports) at the university. We should use significant portions of our endowment to:

    Pay the victims
Establish a world class institutes in child abuse and organizational/insituation control research
Establish a national awareness campaign on child abuse
Continue to build our research infrastructure
Continue to turn PSU into a premier academic insituation
Pay the DOE and other entities that could fine us/pay for the policies to be adopted

The reality is that sports and funding for sports is going to be down on the list right now. I am not saying they won't survive, but they will have to do it with reduced budgets. Wrestling and Hockey being the exception due to their booster clubs.

I am going to support PSU under the extremes circumstances....I wouldn't care if the football team never has a winning season again (I would root if we didn't win another game). I will still show up early and stay late! BUT to say that these sanctions do not set back the football program and the AD at least a decade is wishful thinking...I hope your right, but we have to repair the image of the entire university...

Actually, the BIG hasn't been with PSU for awhile. Just a question I want an honest answer for. The BIG went out of its way for OSU brokering that deal so ineligible players could play against Arkansas. Why did they do that? What have they done to support PSU during this? Nothing. Their actions are far from standing by our side IMO.

  • MSU fans trolling pretty hard?? So odd. Did that forced "rivalry" that we had for teh ugly Land Grant Trophy actually work? I had no clue that we had a beef with them or they with us?? I know we beat them something like 13 out of 18 times since we joined B10, never really thought much of them at all until Mark D got so upset he called back to back timeouts to freeze us fans waiting for our Rose Bowl celebration on a COLD night in Happy Valley. Enjoy it, all the trolls. Have your fun. We are the new easy target.....

Remember, Swoffords vision, much like the Pac-12 isn't in the next 5 year window, it's 10 years from now...and yes, I firmly believe, even now, if the Big 10 were to boot us (they aren't), the ACC couldn't get on the phones fast enough to talk to ND and PSU and get each on board in the conference.

It won't happen, but completely dismissing it would be wrong.

I do agree, Swofford would castrate himself to land ND and PSU...even now.
