Screw The NY Times

What a sorry excuse for journalism. Yes it is an opinion but none the less, the paper has full authority over what they decide to publish. When is the media and the zombies of our society ever going to get it. This is not about who was wrong and if people should be punished. This is all about the NCAA having zero authority or right to do what they did. It would be like the IRS charging a criminal higher taxes just because they can. Not applicable at all.

I would find your thread more appealing if it read "Screw NY". biggrin

  • How long is it going to take before people realize that posting a link (basically, spreading it and getting them more clicks) is not the best way to approach an article that you dislike.

I refuse to click on the link, personally, because reading it doesn't help my blood pressure and ranting about it doesn't help the situation at all. Just how it goes with the internet (and news media/entertainment in general).

  • I dont get the "They havent learned their lesson" crowd. As long as they report child rape/all crimes from here on out, we've learned our lesson. We are still allowed to try to run a successful football program, which has nothing to do with any other lessons learned.

I think you are going to have to acquire some thick skin. There are going to be journalists with opposing view points to yours. There are going to be alot of people outside PSU that think PSU didn't learn a lesson in this and I can see their point to a certain extent.

Reading the comments of that story is infuriating... people are just ridiculously stupid. Nobody in PA is promoting child rape. Nobody is upset that sandusky is in jail and not able to rape kids. People think child rape and it blinds all perspective.

Yet every time you specifically ask someone on a one to one basis exactly "What lesson do you think PSU hasn't learned?" they stammer and stutter and inevitably mutter something about the victims.

The "haven't learned their lesson" crowd still can't separate Penn State the entity, alumni, students and athletes from the horrific acts of JS and the media storyline on JoePa and the others. Their entire argument is based on emotion and when actually confronted face to face they back down immediately.

  • Thanks for letting me know about the "land mine" that I should avoid. I refuse to even visit this article. Don't want to give them the satisfaction of claiming another "hit" which boosts their justification for printing more articles like these. If there's a positive article out there...I will visit it many times in order to drive traffic to a site publishing good news and the truth for Penn State.

  • I love the NY Times (and subscribe to it), but refuse to read any opinion piece - or most straight news pieces - on the scandal. The ones that I have read are from writers who didn't know the specific details of the situation, but who rather gathered their info and opinions from other news sources that had things wrong or incomplete. Not worth the aggravation.

We need to stop being surprised. You would love to think that the esteemed media outlets would do their homework and be fair. Sadly this isn't the case. What WE can do is learn from this entire sad episode and make small changes in our lives. Be a little more humble and less judgmental of others. As we've seen, it's very easy to judge without the knowing the whole story.

  • yeah listening to the radio here is des moines the other day, they brought up the Corbett lawsuit and just talked about how clearly "we just don't get it".

Then later when they were asking for the best and worst stories of the year, the host was quick to mention PSU for the worst but when someone called in and talked about how the team performed, fought through the punishment they didn't deserve, and came out with a winning record, he basically laughed the guy off the radio essentially calling him a jackass and saying we ahve to leave PSU out of it for the next 4 years

  • Unless your the boy scouts of America and have records of over a thousand cases of child abuse that was never reported to the police.

And yet the Boy Scouts won't let homosexuals into their organization and people support them because of that!

Covering for pedophiles is ok as long as you don't let gays in? What the F is wrong with some people.

I agree with need to have thick skin however the culture of the media in this country is running amok and needs to change. We have the responsibility to question it and bring out it's insane inaccuracies. Of course, we can't let it get to us personally or our heads would explode.

Although I believe Corbett is grandstanding and trying to save his skin, either to garner more votes or further deflect and coverup his involvement. This is a fight that should have happend last summer by the BOT.

It's mind boggling to me that very few people care about the lack of due process, rush to judgement (with no proof of wrongdoing and even admission of no actual rules broken), circumventing their own rules of checks and balances (NCAA), lack of coverage of ESPNs Mark Shultz's coverup of Bernie Fine, the absolute disregard for the truth, lack of care about the Second Mile's involvement, and on and on and on....

Someone needs to put a stop to this. Ok I will stop my rant now.

  • Who exactly do you think is abusing these kids? Heterosexuals?

I'm not a expert in the field, but pedophilia has nothing to do with being a homosexual. That's a common misconception.

I thought the same thing you do until I did further reading on it. Pedophiles hide in plane sight, they have wives, girlfriends, families.

I went to HS with two kids who's father was arrested for pedophilia years later, he was married and had 3 kids.

Another story from where I grew up was a photographer for a local paper that everyone knew, and used to take pics of swim meets, was arrested for kiddie porn.

Another example is a girl I went to HS with who's father was arrested for kiddie porn just a couple years ago.

My point is I get why you'd think all pedophiles are homosexuals, but it's simply not true. It's misconceptions like this that allow the real pedophiles to get away with what they do b/c people see a married man with kids and say "he can't be a pedophile, he's not gay". If there's one thing we should learn from the entire scandal it's that pedophiles exist and hide in plain sight and we all need to be more vigilant in spotting them.

We can start by moving past the false notion that pedophiles are homosexuals.

And more on point, the Boy Scouts currently exclude gays, and have over 1000 cases of child molestation they've been hiding. If they exclude gays, then either

    1. they have no clue how to do so and a bunch of gays somehow infiltrated the Boys Scouts

    OR

    2. it was not gays abusing the children in the Boy Scouts.

  • I agree with those that suggest we all need to get some thicker skin when it comes to this stuff because it's not going away anytime soon. Child abuse is horrific and that makes people irrational. No one is more disturbed by what happened here than many of us, but the idea that PSU should just whither away because it happened is so illogical that it's not even worth the energy to explain why.

Let them talk and just ignore it. And, for God sakes, stop posting links and giving them attention! ;)

  • Whoa there, cowboy. You're assuming a LOT from one question. I said none of the things that you're trying to dispute. You've created quite the straw man.

My question was very simple, albeit snarky. Do you think heterosexuals are the ones who are sexually abusing boys?

I will also add (before this thread gets locked) that if you want to go much deeper into this discussion beyond that one question, we should probably take this to PM. I know Sean and co. don't want this kind of debate on the boards, and I know this is a sensitive and controversial subject.

To answer your question... I don't know. I don't know why anyone would ever want to abuse a child. I honestly don't think you can classify these predators according to the gay/straight paradigm. They are a completely different category.

But I agree, let's drop this discussion and move back to how terrible the NYT Op Ed's are in general.

They're still stuck in the bash Penn State mode hoping to get more hits and generate traffic.

And seriously, stop posting links to these idiotic articles. It's like having a cold and purposely coughing on someone to spread the virus.
