Scholarships available by position

  • Intrigued by the new staffs' approach and priorities to what positions they will fill in 2013.
    With ~22 scholarships available:

Positions that appear to have solidifying scholarship quotas
    1- QB
1- RB (per what BOB told David Williams)
1-TE (assuming only 1 since we didn't offer the Wisconsin decommit that went to Pitt)
    1 - Slot (was Switzer)
1 OG - speculation has been only one interior lineman
2 - DE (based on Drennon, closed at two for now, could become 3 based on superior talent)

Total of 7 leaving 15 for ILB, OLB, CB, S, WR, DT, and OT. Assuming no specialists and no FB.

    Best guess:
    1 - ILB
    2 - OLB
    2 - CB
    2 - S
    2 - WR
    2 - DT
    2 - OT
1 - ATH (potential WR/S type aka Boyd)
1 -OL/DL (potential OL or DL aka Wilkins or superior talent DE aka Allen)

Based off the numbers available, can understand why they held off on Drennon. Not due to talent, but due to needs elsewhere.

  • Pretty good plan IMO. Be interesting on how this list fills in based on current offer/targets and who gets added once HS football starts up this fall.

  • Where did you get the number 22 from? Everything I've read suggests less spots than that this year.

  • 22 is quite generous. We'd have to see a few more disciplinary dismissals and several non-returning 5th yr players to get to that number. It's possible, but I think 20 is a more appropriate ceiling to work with.

    QB-1, RB- 1, WR- 2, TE- 1, OL- 4, DL- 4, LB- 3, DB- 3, ATH- 1 IMO.

  • I've read everywhere from 20 to 23 depending on the number of redshift seniors that do not return. Minimum is 16, + normal attrition (Transfers/dismissals), and 5th years invited not to return. Based on BOB's comments about the number of Offensive linemen would expect any of these not on the two deep: Figueroa, Howie, Shrive, and Cadogan. Other candidates are Kuntz, Wallace, and Felder.

  • 22 requires 7 more dismissals after Oakman. It is possible, but I don't think the staff is working w a number that high...yet.

i expect some 5th year guys to be told thanks but no thanks...also, everyone has a clean slate now in the spring, but transfers are inevitable with a new coaching change and we have yet to have any.

  • I'm going w/20 as my # because 4 is not a huge jump from the 16 we currently sit at. Its difficult to assume what 5th years won't be back at this point because a lot of them are currently in the 2 deep of the line up.That said there are a few prospects at WR and OL who could move on, while a kid like Thomas perpetually has 1 foot out the door. Evan Hailes is another one to watch as he has battled recurring blood clots.

    QB-1
    RB-1
    TE-1
    WR-2
    OL-4
    DE-2
    DT-2
    LB-3
    S-2
    CB-2

If the the number exceeds 20 I would like to see another LB and another DB.

Good post 33, it seems like a reasonable plan. For some reason I thought there was a post here months ago that PSU would be able to get nearly the full 25 scholarships. It seems that is not the case but I agree with the post above that some 5th year players may not come back either of their own choice or with encouragement.

Of course this is SEC thinking but are there scholarships out there for these 5th year players to finish their degree? If there are non athletic scholarships available it would make the choice for the players easier.

Agree that Golden and Williams may impact recruiting based on their position. The other two guys that might flex are Pollard (DT/OT) and Wilkerson (DE/TE).

  • Nit wit and the others are right - we have 16 open right now. I remember thinking we had 17 after Thomas was rumored to be gone, but thankfully he's back.

It's a good strategy to keep the numbers down for now, continue to recruit kids and let them know that spots may open later on depending on what happens.

FWIW, I don't count the open scholarship as open. I think one of the walk-ons will wind up w a permanent scholarship (Day, Keiser, DLV).

Was wondering where you got the number 7 from. Curiosity compels me to ask - why do you think that? We don't really know what BOB's tendencies are with that yet, and I'd be inclined to say he wants his first full recruiting class to have a good number of recruits in it.

Your point is valid...we don't know BOBs tendencies. My thought process is...if we have guys like Day, DLV, and Keiser...who could potentially contribute in a significant fashion this yr...they deserve consideration. Furthermore, if some of the potential casualties occur at their respective positions (Thomas or Dukes for example), they are more likely to contribute in the next 2-3 yrs...and deserve to be compensated. In that case, a few of these kids are 'surer' bets at positions of need than incoming recruits, and they wouldn't be one yr wonders. It's rare to find kids who contribute multiple seasons and remain off scholarship. We have 3-4 walk-ons who could contribute up to 3 yrs. I wouldn't be shocked if Day or one of the DBs got a scholly if Dukes and Thomas aren't around.

Hm, absolutely legitimate thoughts. I had assumed that if a walk-on contributed heavily (as you said, it's very likely this year), then he'd get a scholarship, but it would be for the year, not necessarily for multiple years.

You could very well be right, as it currently seems like the staff is trying to keep the recruiting class small (2 DE's, 1 RB for now...). It's one of the situations to monitor this year and see how BOB handles it.

With that said, we could have 2 walk-ons get scholarships and STILL have 7 additional departures. There is that much dead weight lingering. I still think this class will be around 20, while next yrs class could go as high as 25. The staff is playing it safe until they at least get closer to the season, which is wise.

there is an absurd amount of dead weight on our roster...They need to take after Pat on methods to clean out that deadweight. That sounds terrible to say, but different coaching staffs obviously recruit different players. Not every prospect on our team is going to fit in to the new schemes on O and D. They need to be told where they stand early (after spring ball and the staff gets a look at them all).

Agreed. As much as I dislike forcing kids out in general, with the RS Jr. deadweight, it's almost necessary to create a little consistency between the classes. I don't like having so many spots open in one class - I'd rather have a consistent number (21 or so?) each year.
