Scholarships available?

I had a conversation with someone last night regarding available PSU football scholarships available this year. I though I read that we would have limited scholly's available but a few recently opened up to get us to 16-18, the other party believes that there are 24-25 available. What is the real number available?

20 is the magic number.

20 is the best sure bet. We may go higher than that. Expect many guys with a 5th year eligible to not be asked back. Some transfers may also happen. 20 is the best number now, it may get up to 23 though. But work with 20.
So right in the middle of those two.

No one knows what the real number is right now. It's way too early. There will be some kids that don't return and move on. I think the end will be somewhere between 22-25.

I think you may end up being right. But like I was trying to communicate to rmj in another thread, I think 20 is the best bet now and we keep watching how things evolve.

Hoping for only 19-21, maybe 22.
Right now, 16 is what I have. 12 more to go with the 4 in the fold. I think min of 3 OL leave from the '09 class (7 brought in) bringing it to 19. Couple more, through transfer or asked not to return is solid I think.
That would give us the range listed, and then also around 20 for next season's recruiting as well, which I think is am important factor. I wouldnt be asking so many guys to leave. To much attrition I think can harm a team, if a team atmosphere is truly what you are looking for. JMO there.

Doesnt matter how you "designate" them. You still need to be 85 or less by the start of Fall practice I believe.

In a sense, he'd take one away from this class and add one more to the following class to reach the 85 number. There would be one less available roster spot in 2013 with him on the team and when he's done after 2013,someone takes that ship in 2014

The Plus 3 rule pertains to the number of available scholarships you have on LOI day plus 3 more for kids who may leave BY The cut down day...The first day of practice in August ( pre season practice).
In the end ,you can ONLY have 85 scholarship athletes on your roster that first day of pre season practice.
The devil is in the details of how you ended up at that magic 85...on that issue the BIG is silent.
It is easy to recruit as many as you want,You just need to show you have that number (minus 3) of ships open or soon to be open on LOI day...
Grey shirts, medical red shirts,striped shirts ( the guys you ship off to JC or prep school to "improve their grades"), or any other ruse you can think of to make the numbers fit.

Fly, first off thanks for the explanation. That said, I do understand the rule and the process. That is what I meant by needing a "plan to get to 85". This is going to get interesting in the future with 4 year scholarships of course. Medical redshirts are interesting that you mentioned, becasue that doesn't free up a scholarship that year though.
