Scholarships available

  • I know it's fluid (depending on who stays and leaves), and I've seen everything from 9 to 15...but could someone who has a decent grasp of the situation offer a good estimate of how many scholarships we have for the 2014 class. Does this include the three EEs I think are available? Any input is greatly appreciated.

  • Yeah, easy request. Right now we have 9 scholarships available, 3 of which can be used as EEs. 3 have been filled with Allen, Scott, and Reeder so we have 6 more guys to go. That can obviously open up in a number of ways, like you mentioned.

The EE's are not a factor at this time because we are now going up against the 65 limit cap. Right now we have a scholarship roster of 69 players with 11 exhausting their eligibility after this year. That means that we currently have room to add 7 players. However, it is speculated that a couple of players will not be asked back for their 5th year (Bars and Kenney). Then you have a couple of former walk-ons that will have eligibility after this season... they may not have a scholarship next year. So, I would say that we are almost certain to have 9 available. With that being said, we still have to see if anyone transfers after spring practices and there are a few players (Robinson, Carter, Amos and Smith) that may jump early to the NFL.

When it's all said and done, I think that 12 is a reasonable target at this point, but if I were to guess, I think that number gets close to 15 by signing day.

So in your scenario. If we only take 9 this year with 3 being EE, we could take 24 the following year. We would need 9 EEs but would need to be at 65.

wow, i sure hope Donovan Smith or Kyle Carter won't jump to NFL after being only a redshirt sophmore.......Logical guy would be Robinson if he has another season like he did. I wonder if the staff thinks Amos too -

Just to clarify, these figures/estimates you present are in addition to any EEs we may add this class?

Is our EE limit at 3?

The EE's don't factor in to the 65 limit. They only help us when we have more than 15 scholarships available to give. With that being said, you want to try to use them up if possible because you can "bank" this year's unused scholarships for EE's next year. But in terms of working against the 65 limit cap, EE's count just the same as a normal scholarship.

I do believe that we have 3 EE's available for this year.

It would stink, but if they get a good draft grade, I can see them leaving. Of course, that would mean that they would likely need to have really good years, so it's not all bad. But yeah... it would be nice to have those guys longer.

this is correct. Using the the 3 EE's available in this class makes sure we use up all of our available 15 scholarships for the 2013 class. If we don't fill our 15 scholarships in 2014 (class total of 18, 15 + 3 EE's) then we can use whatever unused scholarships from the 2014 class as EE's for the 2015 class. Gotta keep using the EE's as much as you can because you never know when we will be able to go above 15 (and stay under 65) in the future and you want to make sure we are maximizing our scholarship limits from the sanctions.

On one hand it would hurt to lose those guys. On the other hand, what a selling tool for recruiting.

It would suck to lose Kyle Carter but PSU has enough guys in the pipeline to make up for that loss. Donovan Smith leaving would be absolutely devastating though because there really isn't anyone behind him ready to step in and take his place. Hopefully BOB can convince him to stick around till atleast the end of his junior season so the staff can develop a replacement.

I don't have any problems with guys jumping early to the NFL if they are grading out really high....that is a huge recruiting tool that we are going to have to harp on for the next couple years and essentially it's why many guys stayed here in the first place after our sanctions. Need to keep guys in the public eye in the drafts to keep the PSU name out there. Sure, it sucks but these guys deserve it if they earned those high grades.

Are you counting Scott as a RB on your spreadsheet?
