Say that you are Galen Hall...

  • how do you attack this defense that we are about to face?...do you take risks or slow play it with the running game?

Personally, i would love to see us air it out on the first play of the game (like iowa) and really try to get the crowd in it. I feel like the crowd is going to help us on defense, i just feel like our offense might struggle to move the ball on offense.

  • If we get ball first I go play action rolling rob to the right and sending moye deep with brown and kersey coming across the middle as second and 3rd options

  • I think a lot of it depends on the weather. If it's a consistent hard rain, does anyone want either QB airing it out much? Will Silas/Beachum be able to get their footing? Will some of Bama's front 7 speed be greatly neutralized? How saturated will the field be?

I think he's going to react to the game as it comes because it could get very tricky very quickly. I think Galen is just praying for no turnovers at this point.

I'd say this, except make the first options the shorter passes. An incompletion right off the bat would really hurt, whereas a 5-6 yard completion may help start a nice, long drive. Build the kid's confidence and get things moving. JMO.

  • When we get the lead, we don't play not to lose (iowa). That's what screwed us in that game. We got the lead early and then just shut it down.

  • Spread them out 3 and 4 wide and run up the middle. Once they adjust and tighten things up to stop the run you kill them with quick passing.

  • I would start off with some quick, high percentage 3-step drops on 1st and 2nd down - and if Bama moves their corners up then check to a fade down the sideline.

Galen Hall's #1 goal in this game needs to be to stay ahead of the chains. Last year in Tuscaloosa, on their first 18 1st-down plays, Penn State ran the ball 13 times - which put them in way too many 3rd&longs where they only converted 1 of 9 and turned it over twice.
Getting into 3rd&long plays right into Alabama's hands and that's where you turn it over. (btw, Penn State was 0-8 in 3rd&long against Indiana State).

First thing I would do is reach over and punch jay in the face for trying to take credit for being the oc.

Then I would start with small passes and screens before taking a shot deep.

  • Would love to see Rob move some guys around while under center. Check to a draw with some fat lanes for Silas when we know they're in zone. (How much audibling are our QBs allowed to do?) Don't see us send many guys in motion - would like to see some more of that. I feel like he's always gonna have one or two safety valves on passing plays, and that should draw an OLB or two to the outside of the 3-4 leaving a lane for quick slants. We completed a couple of those to Moye and Brown early last year I believe. As others have said, building his confidence early is going to be key. At some point, he's going to be relied on to gain yards through the air.

  • You go backward.

In baseball pitchers sometimes have to pitch backwards...use their offspeed to set up their fastball. PSU needs to get Bama's heels moving, and you do this by surprising them...Playaction, boots, passing on first down off a PA. You have to slow them down from crashing the safeties up. once you have them honest, you can start hitting them with some runs.

If you think you are going to use the run to set up the pass, you're nuts. (You/You're = Penn State)

Agreed. We don't seem to adjust this philosophy based on our competition. That worries me.

  • I wouldn't even show up. Haven't you heard? Bama is showing up with the '85 Bears defense!

  • Question should be posted to the Offensive Co-ordintor.................I mean, the real one!!

  • Throw! Throw! and Throw some more! Just to set up the run game. I would also mix in the run with spread formation.

  • Does anybody remember 3-4 years ago when the Vikings had the top rushing D in the league, by a lot? I'm talking like 48 rpg... Well on a monday night the played patriots and the experts were wondering if the pats could establish a run game. Belichek came out with Brady in the gun and 4 wide and he threw like 45 times. I bet they didn't run the ball 8 times all game. They crushed the Vikings.
I know we don't have Tom Brady, but I'd do that. We are deep and strong at WR and they run a 3-4 built to stop the run. Well, lets take that base defense out of their playbook. Kick a couple linebackers off the field. Spread em out. Then I would also punch Jay, because thats funny.

That is correct. You need to get Alabama on its heels. A good way to slow down an aggressive 3-4 defense is with screen passes, shovel passes, statue of liberty plays, and traps.

I would go back and look at the offensive gameplan from the Rose Bowl if you want to see how I expect PSU attacks Alabama tomorrow. We opened the game spread out and with DWill lined up at tailback. We all remember the defensive meltdown in the 2d quarter of the Rose Bowl, but that game wasn't a bad offensive gameplan -- we moved the ball and scored 24 points -- although untimely turnovers and an inability to convert 3d-and-short killed us.

  • I really feel like running the ball is going to be tough against this defense. We can't obviously abandon, it but I hope to see us set Rob (and/or Matt) up for success by giving him some easy throws early in the game and then start taking chances and open up the playbook. A vanilla offense isn't going to work against Bama...What I really want to see (but doubt we will) is Silas in the backfield with Zordich or Suhey and then motion Silas out wide and look to pass him the ball in space and let him put his nasty moves to work. This would also leave us with a fb to pass block. I think Silas in space could pose some problems for their D.
