Sanctions don't alter redshirt plan

The NCAA sanctions made the 2012 season a different landscape for Penn State's freshmen and its staff. But Bill O'Brien is not letting them affect his decisions on who plays.

  • Wow... If I were Hackenberg... I would love the thought of having Robinson and Geno to throw to! Can't wait to see that!

Edit: And throw in AB?! WOW!

Throw in 3 years of eligibility for Kyle Carter and Jesse James as well as 2 years for Bill Belton and I think it is easy to see that Hackenberg should still have some solid offensive weapons even with these sanctions.

  • OK, so I am clear, if they actually play they can't transfer at the end of the season without sitting out.

I think unless something crazy happens that Hack would be crazy to not come to Penn State.

In fact, I think with a year of seasoning (again) PJ takes over next year with Bench as the backup, and Hack with a Redshirt and used only in an extremem emergency.

Then the year after it is PJ as a Sr. while sharing time with Hack as he gets his feet wet to eventuaslly take over for good.

I am sorry but I am not sure Bench will be anything more than a great and relaible back up QB. Kind of like what McGloin should be if PJ could have picked up the offense.

Not exactly correct. Guys who play can transfer after the season without sitting out. In other words, our young stars can complete this season and school year, transfer over the summer, and play next year at another school.

What they can't do is transfer during the season and play for their new school (this season).

  • PJ is a great team player but I think its abundantly clear that his future is not at QB. He's an athlete and seems to struggle with the mental responsibilities of QB. He may have better measureables than Bench but I don't see him going back to QB at all. Bench is going to be better than McGloin if only because he has an extra year under BOB and Fisher to learn how to be a QB.

  • "The other unique challenge facing O'Brien and the staff is the scholarship table. If a player redshirts in 2012, that's one less scholarship Penn State, which will be dealing with scholarship reductions for the next four years, will have available for the 2016 season, which could potentially affect offers in the next few classes."

Jeff do you really view this as a problem coming up? I was thinking they would try to RS as many guys as possible to make sure they actually hit the 65 limit when the meat of the sanctions is upon us.

I view it as a guy we can keep on the team an extra year considering we can't hit 65 by only bringing in 15 a year.

  • I think more interesting will be next year when the next stage of sanctions hits.

  • Like so many things, it is tempting to be entranced by the next great shiny item (would you rather have an established 3rd year good player in the NFL or take a gamble trading him for a mid first round pick) and overlook what you already have. A guy in your system for several years is much more valuable than some unknown HS talent.

Hopefully the guys that are poised for a redshirt year are mature enough to stick with Penn State when the snake oil salesmen of the world come calling (the fact they are still here indicates just that). Just remember, the PSU redshirt roster is the waiver wire for every team in the BCS Championship hunt. Injuries happen. When a top 10 team takes a hit at RB or WR, you can bet your wife they will be drop shipping recruiters into Happy Valley to try and lure Lynch or Lewis away with visions of greatness.

Proudly delusional PSU fan for 40 years.
