Saban is sooooo confident he has time to get on ESPN tonight

  • helpdesk said:

Saban was mediocre at best while at MSU. But look what he was able to do with the players available to LSU and Bama. He has definitely brought the team pride that was gone prior to 2007 back to Bama.

Michigan St is also borderline not even worthy to be in a BCS conference. I doubt he would have had the same success as he's had at Bama or LSU either at Ole Miss or Kentucky either.

I do agree that the South just has a much better talent pool as well.

I think you have Michigan State confused with Indiana. MSU is no less worthy than a South Carolina on the football field and their basketball program has a great history. Their issue had always been that Michigan got first pick of the local talent, much like Texas A&M or Tech have to play 2nd fiddle to Texas. That has been changing over the last few years.

  • Michigan St wouldn't stay within 2 TDs with South Carolina. We beat Michigan St worse than both Penn St games combined. Maybe it's just the B1G.

"What is Bama's graduation rate under Saban?" implies that you are content, if not proud of his record. If you're proud of 67%, esp given the quality of UA's academics, more power to you. You also apparently have no problem with the issue of over-signing. Fine. What does the fact that other recruits got into other mediocre at best institutions, regardless of their # of stars, have to do with Bama's grad rate? So you don't have the lowest standards in all of FBS. K. My original post was in support of your coach's appearance(s) on espn. Your response was in support of your coach's grad rate and since he isn't breaking any rules, you're ok with over-signing. Good for you. Personally, I believe that if Joe and his staff were more willing to adapt to current trends in offense and coaching in general, we could be much more competitive against top 10 teams with the kids that we currently have on the roster and continue to recruit. The kids that are dedicated to graduating and excelling in the classroom as well as on the football field. All the while, we honor our scholarship offers and even allow our walk-ons to earn them over time. The SEC is by far the most talented conference in college football. Every school, to my knowledge, with the exception of probably Vandy, participates in the most unethical practice in college football recruiting. Pulling scholarships from 5-8 kids a year - baffles me that the NCAA hasn't stepped in and put a stop to this. That's the problem I have with Bama and SEC recruiting practices that I referenced in my original post in this thread. The fact that a couple kids couldn't get into Bama and went to Louisville and South Florida instead is neither here nor there. But they were 5*s, so...

    fuck you

  • All this tripe about oversigning etc is nothing but sour grapes. Academics as well because if you are honest you know PSU athletes are there to play football as well. Academics are what you have to do to stay eligible here in the SEC AND in the Big-10/12.

Saban is a cocky Bellichick desciple that does not give a rip what opposing fans think of him. I doubt seriously that he has many friends BUT you will have to show me some proof of anything "unethical" that is alleged here.

Saban has never offered a kid, signed him and then told him he did not have room to take him. (Lester Big-10 guy Miles did that)

Saban has never booted a kid off the team because he stunk. We have a Sr OT who was a 5 star that hasn't played and he's there every week

Telling someone that they may have an opportunity to play more somewhere else if they choose to do that is not unethical in fact it could be said that keeping someone on for 4 years and using them for tackling dummies when you know they will not play is unethical.

Putting someone who has suffered career ending injuries on medical scholarship is not unethical. They still get a free education. I wish I could have had a medical scholarship.

Bama has never signed 36 kids in a class (Houston Nutt) and the only times Bama over signs above 25 they have players who have agreed to take grey shirts if necessary. Usually there are 1-2 academic casualties per class anyway so the numbers work out.

You use an awfully broad brush on you blanket accusations.

BTW Saban was pretty good at MSU his last year and had he stayed he would have built that program into something special.

Glad no one was injured & Good Luck the rest of the way

Stand up guy. No really, class act. I'm serious, I hope this guy takes the PSU job when Joe retires in 2020.

Alabama Crimson Tide Football Has Some Unhappy Castaways - WSJ.com

Former Alabama football players say the school's No. 1-ranked football program has tried to gain a competitive edge by encouraging some underperforming players to quit the team for medical reasons, even in cases where the players are still healthy enough to play.

Feb. 2 marked another joyous Signing Day in Tuscaloosa, Ala. For the third time in four years, a major recruiting site (Rivals.com) deemed Alabama's class the nation's best. On the heels ofthat past success at 'Bama and two No. 1 classes at LSU, the 2011 haul further enhanced coach Nick Saban's reputation as the sport's most renowned recruiter.

  • Yeah I've seen those and they are nothing but hit pieces. No articles about Lester or Nutt who have actually done some of the things people like to accuse Saban of. He is a convenient target because he's winning. I guarantee you that if you asked a bunch of PSu player who have transferred elsewhere some might be sour grapes.

Charlie Kirschmann was a stiff recruited by Mike Shula and Jeramie Griffin blew out his knee. Neither player had their free education pulled from under them. That ridiculous list had 4-5 players that were booted for discipline reasons, several of which would be starting right now. Robbie Green would be starting but lost a year because of the NCAA (allegedly drugs) fouled up again and got booted prior to this season. Moore and Sentimore would be competing for PT on our DL. They both played last year. Alabama was 10th on the list at oversigning.com and has not been accused of breaking NCAA rules here. Why are all these articles singling out Saban? Because he's disliked and an easy target. Just like the NFL media likes to shred Bill Belechik.

Not going to change your opinions here so I'll move on and we will try to muddle through with Saban. I guess every fanbase has their cross to bear.

I didn't say he broke any rules. Relax. 67% of football players graduate at a school that my 12 yr old cousin with a learning disability could get into. Keep up the good work.

To be fair, Alabama is a top 50 public institution, has been for the last 10 years, has a top 30 law school that out ranks a number of Big 10 schools, and at one point a couple of years ago was producing more academic all americans than Harvard.

I think it's fun for many to spout negative southern stereotypes. As if we're all just idiots down here with no "book learnin," but you should probably get your facts straight before you go shooting off.

And as an aside, it's not not like ANY major footbal program in the country is churning out dozens of nobel laureates each year, Penn State included.

Your website doesn't list your players' majors, but I'd be willing to bet there's scores more players majoring in areas like "sociology" and "undeclared" than there are in "engineering" and "pre-med."

Might want to step down from your high horse for a minute.

  • Why oh why does this always have to turn into an academic debate?

I think this thread has taken its usual path after a loss to an SEC school not named Vanderbilt.

  • As an aside, I did want to say that your fans rocked this weekend, and I think PSU is much improved this year over last year on the football field -- even if it didn't manifest itself on the scoreboard for this particular game.

You saw what we did to Mich St last year. We weren't having our way with you in the same manner.
