SI's Stewart Mandel......

  • MarkEmmert, NCAAoverstepped bounds in hammering Penn State - Stewart Mandel - SI.com

Children were raped. Lives were destroyed. High-level administrators stood back and enabled the crimes. A once-revered coach betrayed his followers.

  • We cried foul when the NCAA came down on us....we claimed the NCAA didn't follow precedence and made up rules as they went along...we screamed that the NCAA was a corrupt institution...but no one listened and if they did they would rejoice in our pain and say; there had to be something there, we were punished for our AD's arrogance, we were punished because of the fun and loose environment at practices, for our dominance..and that seemed to be OK with everyone...we warned everyone that if the NCAA can throw out the rule book and levy the worst sanctions since the SMU death penalty against us...then no one is safe....but no one listened.

I beleive the NCAA is a corrupt organization and needs to be dismantled.

  • Nothing will come of this. The media wanted blood and now are saying ooops, it really wasn't the NCAA's job to go for the kill here. Let mob mentality rule and this is exactly what you get. No NCAA investigation. PSU didn't even get a shot to propose their own penalties, they got a threat of DP or else. The Freeh report didn't talk to MM, Joe, or Curley but was conclusive enough to act on. All you can do is shake your head. Horrible crimes were committed, but where is the history of NCAA violations again? Oh yeah, they don't exist and aren't even there in this case.

In addition it is a PR nightmare. If PSU appeals (which the NCAA knew we wouldn't), then it looks like we are just reinforcing their claims that all we care about is football and not the crimes and the victims. We should have this right just like everyone else. There are so many issues with the Freeh report and they take it as unquestioned truth. If we fight the football program might come out with fewer, more appropriate sanctions, but we look bad (even though as a school, students, alumni and entire community we have done - and will continue to do - more than any other institution around child abuse. This will never get picked up by the media.) The NCAA had the perfect situation to overstep their authority and processes, and know we would not fight back (especially considering how weak our leadership has been to this point).
