SIAP: Playoff system...

  • I think we will eventually get to 8 but before that can happen, we need to get to 4. If you know anything about the history of college football, you know they move very slowly.

Hell, this was discussed in the early 90s and we are just getting to it now.

Two good reads on the subject are death to the bcs and the 50 year suduction. The latter is out of print but it's still avaiable on amazon. While its older, it really does show how we got to about 2004. I think it's a must read for anyone who calls themselves a hardcore cfb fan

Good unless they are undefeated they don't deserve to be in anyways.

Boise State isn't ranked 3rd if they aren't undefeated.

  • I like it a lot.

I actually wrote my final paper for my rhetoric class on why we should have a college playoff. The professor was a big ND fan and relatively young, so it went over well.

Anywho, great news for CFB in general, although it makes conference ties even weaker IMO.

‏@Cordale10 Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS

  • Fort Worth and TCU could hold a playoff game on short notice. We're a pretty big city and the metropolis on general is gigantic and there are tons of hotels in the area. The stadium is small though.

It's schools like Texas Tech, A+M, OkieState and VaTech that would have issues with this, and here at PSU because of the lack of hotels.

I think this system favors schools in bigger cities though, as the BCS is more likely to pick them to be a venue for logistical reasons.

Love the idea though, very excited.

Especially if the games are midweek. Could you imagine a Wed or Thu night game at the Beav? Wow.

  • BCS eliminates eight-, 16-team playoff proposals - ESPN

FBS conference commissioners, Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick and other college football officials Thursday agreed to eliminate eight-team and 16-team playoff proposals to determine the sport's future national champions, but settled on very little else.

  • I like the 4 highest ranked (by computers) conference champions. I know this year it would suck to be Alabama. But it is the best way to preserve the importance of every game in the regular season. Every other sport does wildcards, but every other sport doesn't have as fantastic a regular season with pressure to perform every week.

If you make it only conference champions, then those 1 vs 2 games do matter. And undefeated teams in mid-majors matter. And the ACC race matters.

If you limit it to 4, then teams can't afford to lose even if they have wrapped up their conference because it could knock them out of the top 4.

It would slow down conference expansion if even 16 team conferences only get a maximum of one team in the final 4.

And Notre Dame, you can't win your conference unless you join one. Choose. Now.

    More than just football

  • I'm actually suprised how many people want more than 4 teams in the playoff. Lets be honest - in college football do more than 4 teams actually deserve a shot at the title? I don't think so, and I think letting in more than 4 teams will greatly devalue the regular season, which in my opinion is the best in all of sports.

  • I agree, 4 teams is good enough for me. The max I would do is 6 (with byes for #1 and #2). But this needs to be a selection committee like the NCAA Basketball Tourney, not computer driven.

No, I actually think that the BCS formula is about as good as we will get to having "impartial" rankings because it combines both computer and human rankings. I do wish that it would use AP ranking instead of the coaches Poll, as I know a lot of coaches vote dishonestly. But still, I never had a problem with the eventual NC since the BCS came around. Yeah, there were teams left out of the big game, but the better team won.

4 is good. 8 is okay. Anything beyond that is ridiculous.

Coaches have agendas and they also don't watch near the amount of CFB as others.

You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game, life or football-the margin for error is so small. -Pacino
