SIAP: O'Brien on Pittsburgh talk

  • Coach OB was on a Pittsburgh radio talk show this morning. Good fifteen minute interview, plus hosts' comments were very positive until Paul "the douche' Alexander chimed in. Pittsburgh beat writer Paul Zweis (spelling?) found it comical the number of emails and questions he received from Pitt fans asking if Pitt's football program is now on equal terms with Penn State after the scandal. In so many words, he said the programs were not in the same universe, that Penn State's is far superior; and if Coach OB continues on his current path Penn State should return to being one of the top five programs in the country!

Pitt's new coach was interviewed separately. Seems like a down-to-earth guy, but not nearly as sharp as Coach OB. Predictable, considering Coach OB has probably been interviewed many more times the Coach Chryst.

  • I heard the interview too and I thought BOB did an excellent job. I was alittle annoyed w/ how the hosts kept trying to bring Pitt into the situation and talk about Fraud Graham and how he trashed the Pitt program. I guess that's the Pittsburgh media bias!

All those comments were from Paul Alexander, who hates Penn State.

yeah, but it is a pitt based radio station, so gotta figure the main fan base wants to hear about pitt every now and again

  • Ya I was actually impressed w/ Paul Zeise's comments. I thought he basically said what Pitt fans refused to accept, that Pitt isn't in the same universe as PSU, also I love how all the people in the media who said PSU wouldn't be able to recruit have to eat crow now that BOB and Co. and putting together a great class and Pitt doesn't have a commit yet!

    Why?

    He's a Penn State grad.

  • He used to cover PSU back in the day. Fran Fisher just the other day on the Goon Show mentioned him.

Also, Zeise (I believe it was) mentioned that if O'Brien keeps it up that "Penn State is Ohio State." I think he meant the level of play in the program, not the level of pay, if you know what I mean. Good comments from a Pitt guy.

Paul Chryst: "we are you know going to you know play you know you know really tough you know." (he definitely does not have charisma or ability to give an interview)

  • Not sure why you think Alexander hates PSU. He's a good friend of Tom Bradleys. He could be a little bitter regarding how things all played out for Tom, but I think Alexander is generally pro-PSU

  • Alexander doesn't hate PSU. And Zeise is a Temple grad so he's for the most part honest on his assessments of Pitt, good or bad.

  • I'm sure O'Brien held his own. He has plenty of experience with rivalries and aggressive media:

Atlanta (GT / UGA), Duke / UNC, NY/Boston (Jets / Pats), the Superbowl......OB's transition into PSU...

His bachelor's at Brown was in "Organizational Behavior & Management and Political Science"

As we're learning, this guy is pretty good.

If that is true, he must of had a real bad experience there.

  • "Pitt isnt in the same universe as PSU"... woah, took them a while to figure that out. lol +1

I don't think he hates Penn State, he's just performing his craft in the style of the day ... stirring up controversy to grab customers. shrug

I thought about this for the last twenty-four, and maybe hate is the wrong word. Maybe he's trying to compensate for his allegiance to Penn State by dissing them on occasion in order to seem fair in his analysis. However, on Saturday's show he was pretty hard on OB, and has been hard on Penn State in the past.

Unlike Alexander, Guy Junker, who did the "Penn State Football Story", never has a negative thing to say about Ol' State! Guy is a PSU grad.

  • Paul Alexander doesnt hate PSU he just is tentative to be Pro-PSU on the Pitt radio station, so he sits on the fence a lot.

Take note of my last post. Seems like we are actually in agreement.

    Agreed.

Paul has been much more "pro Penn State" in the past with other jobs. His tone has changed since joined 93.7, which is very much a "Pitt channel". He's doing what he has to do on that channel to continue to be on that channel.

I found the entire lineup of hosts to be so obnoxiously biased, I don't even tune in any more.
