SIAP - McCray to Michigan

  • Didn't see this posted - but Michael McCray from Dayton committed to Hoke yesterday. Listed at the no. 10 athlete and 168 player overall by 247.

247 says we have offered him, but in an S-Zone a little while back I believe Sean said he never officially was offered by our staff.

Michigan continues to do well, and even though OSU didn't offer him I enjoy seeing their talented in-state players going elsewhere.

Kid is a hell of a player.

Personally I'm surprised OSU didn't offer him, but they believe if Urban would come knocking he would listen. They believe that with anybody though.

Even Michigan fans are saying that if Urban offers, he could very well go to OSU. We will have to wait on this one.

In this case their arrogance may be justified because I've read that McCray's dad was a team captain there, so his ties go even deeper than the usual Ohio fanaticism. So we'll have to see if Hoke showing him the love from the start will pay off, or if Meyer can swoop in later and tell him that "hey, we love YOU now that other guys we loved earlier didn't love us back"

Considering that he's committing so early in the game, I think he'll just stick with UM even if Meyer takes a run at him later -- he had enough options that he could have held off committing and waited to see if Ohio would come calling.

  • I know i talked about this in a previous post, but i just don't understand why Meyer is letting all these in state talent guy go. I'm mean he isn't even offering them. I guess when you fell you can recruit anyone you want, it doesn't make much difference if its in state or out of state talent. I always figured that locking down your home state first is a priority

This is just speculation, but I think he may feel that since they are Ohio kids, he can come in late and swoop them up if OSU's "plan A" kids go elsewhere.

Personally, I would be trying to lock that state down from day one. shrug

I do and its the same thing with BOB in PA. You identify the top seven or eight kids in the state and go balls to the wall for them. Meyer is expanding the Ohio State recruiting base nationally. There is no reason to offer the top 20 kids just for the sake of offering to protect the state. Is protecting the state getting the majority of the top 20 kids, or getting the majority of the top eight?

They took five linebackers last year and have four or five higher on their boards this year. They probably only take two at the most.

  • I think there is a difference between the love of Ohio St in Ohio and Penn St in Pennslyvania. Ohio St's fandom rivals that of Alabama, Oklahoma, Nebraska and Maybe Texas but that is a different animal for a few reasons. Penn St is just a notch below that but when you consider how huge Penn St the Steelers and Eagles are not to mention High School football is in PA, I think PA ranks way up there in knowledgeable fans and just passion for football from an entire state perspective.

But I digress I think Meyer is in the unique position of being able to wait on in state talent a little bit because Jimmy and Joe's dream is to play for the buckeyes. Where in pa there is a lot more Jimmy and Joe's that grew up dreaming about playing for the Steelers or Eagles more so than Penn St.

  • McCray could help us with Anzalone biggrin Not going to Mich per twitter... Instead, visiting us for the second time in two months! Hoping the team will be back in town to help woo him.

Yeah good point, I forgot they had so many linebackers, I think I'm probably a little sensitive with in state talent because of how many top notch kids we have lost through the last couple of years.

I would love to push in to Ohio. I am really excited for this years recruiting class.

Agree wholeheartedly. If we can keep the TOP PA talent in state, we should be in VERY good shape moving forward... There is always top end talent and solid talent that will help fill the roster. I like the approach by BOB. Also, there are a few guys that will make a leap up in rankings- Anzalone, Johnson, Williams, Boyd- as their offer lists continue to blow up. If we get the top 8 kids in the state in 2013, for example, we will be in very good shape
