Running Back Kryptonite?

  • Do we have some sort of special hazing specifically for freshman running backs that they don't get to find out about until their visits? Why the hell does no RB want anything to do with us?

    * Depth Chart wide open
    * Great O-Line classes the last few years
    * Not like we're running Hawaii's offense here?..... you'll get plenty of touches
    * Decent track record of putting RBs in the pros
....... and you play in front of 100,000+ every home game in one of the top atmospheres in college football.

  • Our RB coach is old, nearly as old as our head coach. I think it's really telling that NONE of the top 3 RB's in the state of PA have any interest in us. We did have high interest from one of the top RB's in the state of Ohio but that bridge was burned. This is when being extremely picky with your selections hurts you.

We pretty much put all of our eggs in the basket with Mahone and that ship has sailed. Dunn seems interested but I'm still not convinced he ultimately ends up here. I still think we are 3rd after OSU and UM. Harris, Garmon, Harris....forget about it and they are all PA kids too. headslap

disagree. i think top guys want to be able to come in and compete for a job. Most of your elite kids don't want to be promised anything, and they want to earn their PT.

Very few kids (ie: jimmy claussen) demand X things. Mahone is good, but he's not good enough to demand X amount of PT.

  • 1)84 year old HC that does not recruit.
2)OC/RB Coach who does not recruit.
3)OC/QB Coach who dislikes recruiting but is in charge of one of the most talent laden states annually

This is backbone of our offensive staff. We attempt to recruit top flite RBs with our LB and TE Coaches, where other programs of equal stature counter w/Head Coaches, Coordinators, and young aggressive position coaches. Add a dysfunctional offense w/zero identity and its fairly easy to understand. Penn ST. certainly has a lot of good things going for it and it seems like a slam dunk on the surface for any top back, but below the surface the problems are there. If you are a talent the caliber of Shell or Mahone and could go just about anywhere, why voluntarily join this circus?

I've been wondering that too (for a few years now). I mean, we've had some VERY productive running backs over the years (including in the last 10). LJ, Tony Hunt, Evan Royster, and now Silas Redd.

LJ -- 2000 yard season in college, Pro Bowler in the NFL
Tony Hunt -- 5 ypc in college, NFL draftee. His choice not to make more of it.
Evan Royster -- 5 ypc in college, NFL draftee. Promising RB with the Redskins.
Silas Redd -- True Soph lighting it up. If he continues to light it up like this, could be gone after next season.

Could go back even further, but LJ is as far back as any recruit today would know about (or care about).

  • Good running backs tend to be flashy players, and as such, they tend to want to play for flashy schools. Penn State is not a flashy school. That has always been my take.

-Additionally, you have the myth and stereotype of "Penn State RB's" mentioned every April before the NFL draft. While not necessarily true and grossly exaggerated, in the minds of recruits it can have an negative affect and offset many of the positives of the school's RB tradition.

I have to say, I've followed the draft quite religiously now for several years and have never heard that - what exactly about "Penn State RB's" are you talking about? In fact, when it comes to RB's, I don't believe I've ever heard a school-specific stigma attached to them.

PSU RBs are a bust and or injury prone in the eyes of NFL people.

    Totally disagree with this...

You can go down the list of any major school and name numerous busts at a position.

    Look at FSU and WR's

The only people that hold these stigmas or stereotypes are fanbases.
The NFL is a business and these GM's and personnel departments are a little more advanced than buying into hoaxes such as this...

Are there situations where they say that a kid might be overrated due to the system that they are in (Texas Tech QB, etc.)... Yes.

But NFL scouts look at the individual and the competition... not something so fleeting as fanbase arguments.

At one time I heard this often with Blair Thomas, Carter, and Enis. Honestly, I haven't heard that in over 10 years.

Disagree, if that's the case ND wouldn't be in contention for so many of the top RB's. After our starter there will be plenty of opportunity to come in and contribute. Woods will be the man next year and hopefully the year after that.

So...one example? Sorry, it's not something that ever came up when discussing Royster - there were plenty of other things to consider, but I never heard anyone say anything about "PSU RB reputation." If anyone has a link to some commentary or analysis of draft picks, I'd like to see it.

Unfortunately, the "success" of running backs at Penn State since LJ left is more myth than reality. I've heard people talk about the streak of 1000 yard rushers before. Now, averaging 5 ypc is considered an incredible feat? If you take the time to look at the NCAA's database, about 50 kids per year in Division I rush for over 1000 yards per year. I just looked at last year's stats and considerably more than 50 kids averaged over 5 ypc. Any college offense that is predominantly based on the run and utilizes a featured back should be able to accomplish both of those goals with a 12 or 13 game schedule.
