  • Sean, do you remember how Mateas got on PSU's radar? His commitment came as a real shock last year, so I was wondering how they got wind of a kid up in Canada who wasn't already on the national stage.

    getmyjive11

  • so do you think that this years haul of offensive linemen or last years is better?

  • I like this feature. And focusing on a unit or 2 is nice.

Good to hear on Mateas. Freely admit to knowing much less about him than the others here.

Yeah, I don't think anyone knew about him, Seltz. All that was said about him after the initial "what? who???" was "well... he has nice size". That's why I am really curious as to how PSU found out about him in the first place.

    getmyjive11

  • Mateas just looked strong......unusual for a PSU O-Lineman.

    jayer

  • Am I the only one who caught the reference to Mateas and olympic lifting thing??

So he was ahead of the curve, able to do more than most others (yes I know he was a year older) and we bring him here and now what, he regresses?

Never Mind, no sense in starting that H.I.T discussion again. Seen those get ugly on BWI before.

That is my name on their tops and no one can tell me any different!!!!

  • It'd be pretty cool if we had a canadian start for us someday imo

He got into the recruiting process extremely late... Didn't send out his film until December. Had offers from Syracuse, North Carolina, UConn and a few other smaller programs. Was actually committed to UConn and was gonna sign with them for this years class. Then JayPa got a hold of his film and flew up here to visit him. Since he was older and had already graduated, Jay fast tracked him and allowed him to be a part of the '10 class rather than this years class. Offer came in, LOI was signed, and the rest was history. He had to take some extra classes in the summer to catch up but he's all caught up now in his studies.

  • hahaha the player who is the strongest used Olympic training... Wonder why the majority of colleges use the same?

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

  • Few thoughts...
For the most part I try to have faith in coaches and stay positive about PSU...but this is a touchy area for me...

Maybe it's the fact that OL play continues to be a weakness ... or getting manhandled by teams like Iowa (who seemingly have more effective S&C programs) every year... There's no reason that we can't or shouldn't be able to dominate Iowa on both sides of the ball (or freaking Illinois - that still stings)
Anyway, i was really hoping for more progress from this class. Who has made the most progress of any OL in this class? The kid that came in stronger than the others.

Anyone else with me? Tired of the OL being a weakness instead of dominant?

With that being said, I finally stopped being stubborn and signed up for my 3rd pay site... I must say that there's really not much of a reason to even read the other boards (except finding some sick humor in all of the negativity at BWI). This site is bad ass Sean. Good work.

Phil Yeboah-Kodie started at OLB and played during the '94 undefeated season. He's Canadian and ended up being drafted by the Redskins. I think he also played for the Colts.

    Kirk

p.s. I'm not sure Phil was the first Canadian to start for a PSU team, but his name was the first that came to mind.

Pete Giftopoulos was the first to come to my mind

  • Nice article, Sean. A couple comments:

    (1) IIRC, Graham was a pretty good d-lineman in high school. With that said, is he athletic enough to play DT at the college level?

    (2) I've been a big fan of Kolb since he verballed. He was one of the top two-way linemen in 2009 in the DC area. Just a pure football player.

    (3) It is good to hear that Mateas is advanced, but how much of that is simply a reflection on the fact that he is older than everyone else?

Not Sean, but to me, for (1), Graham's athleticism is the part I do not worry about. I think he is a very athletic big man. Just needs to be a bigger more filled out big man lol. If that made sense.

Strength/size to me is what he needs. JMO there.
