Recruiting PA

  • I know this is very early to look at our recruiting and be critical at all. The board here shows we have offered 36 young men. Out of 36 only 10 of them are from PA. I do realize it is very early to judge, but what about the statement that we would make PA our prime target. Is it players from our state are simply not interested, academically deficient, not willing to make follow expectations, not really scouted until later, etc? Just kind of curious as to how that ratio is that way. I am very excited about bringing it back around. Lord, knows I have no right to second guess those recruiting. Just trying to gain some insight is all.

  • Or a vital piece your missing....not more than 10-12 are offer worthy lol we're recruiting PA VERY hard as evidenced by our recent junior day. In fact, a couple of our more "questioned" offers (Issah and Boyd) to this point are PA guys

  • I suspect there aren't 36 Div IA (BCS) level kids in PA. As long as we go after the best in-state talent with the grades and character, the ratio is irrelevant.

  • I want the best players PSU can get. If they're from PA great, if not I really don't care cause I want to win football games. PA isn't what it used to be as far as recruiting so we can't rely on it alone to get players.

  • I dont think PA is particularly deep this year. We need to lock down the PA guys that we want, and then fill our class with our targets from other states.

    This is it - we offered all the guys in PA that we feel are worthy and are at a position of need - no need to offer a guy at a position where we don't need anybody. Also does not benefit PSU to get a PA player of lesser quality than an out of state player - PSU will recruit the players it needs and feel will make an impact on the team and if a PA player meets that criteria then they will go hard after that player (that is what they mean by recruiting PA) - not getting PA players for the sake of having the team loaded with PA guys..

  • In my opinion, recruiting Pa is very important. You create pipe lines to PSU from the high schools around the state. Now I agree that you don't offer a kid of lesser talent because he is from PA. But if you have two kids of equall talent from two different states I believe the PA kid should get the first shot. Recruiting your home state is always easier so if you get the PA talent wanting to go to Penn State then it makes it that much easier to land your top in state players. If we would have secured more of the top PA kids over the last 6 to 10 years I think we would have seen a better product on the field.

    In no way am I saying you should not offer kids from other states I think you just need to keep your top in state kids at home. The same as what tressel did at Ohio St. Same that Texas does. A perfect example is Virginia Tech. If you look at their recruiting classes they land about four or five four stars every year. But they are turning out 10 win seasons on a regular basis. Now if we can do the same with our in state kids and recruit the hell out of Ny,Nj,Md and Virginia we should see a huge turnaround with our success on the field.

  • The number of offers to PA kids doesnt bother me. I really dont think we owe it to anyone in PA to recruit PA kids. The only thing I care about is that we make a strong effort for the top kids in the state on a yearly basis.

  • Pitt made a habit of this with Wanny. He would pull down all the frozen slush when it was picked over in order to create his pipelines. Got some good players (shady, baldwin), but in the end we all know what happened...

    Agree. I'm not so much worried about owning PA as I am about owning the Northeast.

    I hear ya ..Agree with that as well .. If we were to own the NE, be very competitive in the Mid Atlantic and pluck some top talent out the South. PSU will NO doubt in my mind, Officially be BACK.

    While you make a statement to protect your borders, that doesn't mean throw out offers to everyone in the state to do it. Protecting your borders means going after the top talent you can - say the top 12 with the understanding you aren't getting everyone. This is a down year for PA, so no need to throw 30 offers in the Commonwealth. Focus on your 10-12 and if you do so, that is putting an emphasis on the state.

    Or we should be looking at the best fits for our O and D (like NE does in the NFL) regardless if they are in the top 10 in each state. Of course it will prob. work out that the top 10 are the best fit (if they pass academic-character wise) most of the time.

    A while ago JC Shurburtt (I believe it was him) said that 247's rankings/ratings were actually based on professional potential. College systems vary so much that it's almost impossible to predict how a kid will do in college, as he could do very well at one versus another.

    Well if we don't offer kids outside of the top ten then we would have missed out on kids like PAul P, Sean Lee, Darryl Clark, evan Royster, Johnny Troutman, Norwood, Butler and Jordan Hill. I'm sure there are a lot more of them i am missing.

    I know what you trying to say about offering top talent but i think the key to it all, is if you are a good talent evaluator. I think this is the most important part, since we don't over sign we live with our recruiting mistakes so it is very important that we limit them as much as possible.

    Pretty much it. One year is never a trend either as some years will be better than others for PA.

  • So much of western PA. recruiting was Bradley, plus Paterno until about 7 years ago, I think it will take some time. Lots of burned bridges east of Bradley.

    The National Underclassmen is proud to present their first ever Keystone State Rankings. Below is the initial Pennsylvania Top30 which will be expanded upon as the year goes on. Pennsylvania currently has four players in the NUC Ultimate100 and five players in the East Top30. It definitely looks like a great year in the Keystone State so expect those numbers to drastically increase. The State rankings will be updated once the NUC Five-Star Academies have been completed this spring.

    Therein lies one of the problems - the top 10 according to who? Hopefully the staff has their own "top 10"
