ROAD CLOSURES (updated 9-8 @11:00PM)

  • bmorepsu said...

I have to think that it's only Thursday, the worst of this stuff is gone, and every state dept. is aware of an event the size of PSU/Bama and the traffic that is associated with it. I have a feeling (and a hope) that some of you will be pleasantly surprised at the conditions of the roads on Sat. morning. I'm not as in the loop as a lot of you with what exactly the situation is with these roads, but I know that there are many other fans like me that would need a SWAT team outside my house, aimed to shoot me dead when I stepped out my front door to keep me from finding a way to get to UP for this game. Just under 48 hrs...

OK...anyone know about Rt 34 going north from Carlisle to pick up 322 at Newport? If I can get an ultra cheap hotel room in Carlisle tomorrow night, that's not a bad shot on Sat morning. I have the day off tomorrow, so I can be adventurous in finding a way across the river.

34 is a piece of cake on normal days. Common short-cut to Carlisle.......................Crossing the Juniata is going to be your problem

You could also take 74 to 75 and try to cross at Port Royal or Mifflintown. No clue on current conditions there.

  • Are all the bridges in Harrisburg closed? (i.e the Harvey Taylor Bridge and the Market St. Bridge)

Anyone know how things are in Berwick, PA? I'm thinking of leaving the Lehigh Valley via 476N to 80W, jumping onto Rt. 93 at Exit 256 and following that across the Susquehanna.

From there, I want to hop on 254 (Rohrsburg Rd), which intersects with 54S - eventually putting me back on 80W at Exit 224.

    Thoughts?

    When are you leaving?

Haven't heard about the two bridges, but Front St is flooded, so its a moot point.

what you're failing to see is the giant flooding river across the eastern portion of the state (the susquehanna) has no way across

Actually, that is NOT TRUE. The three MAJOR bridges around Harrisburg are currently open. Those are (north to south); I-81, I-83 and the PA Turnpike.

Of course, I don't have a crystal ball, but, as of now, they are all open.

FYI, the Susquehanna is due to crest late Friday to very early Saturday, so, monitor things closely. You can get all the current info on the web.

Get ahold of me if you're anywhere around Harrisburg.

How busy is 34 on game days? Would you recommend that route at all? Or how about if I leave tomorrow afternoon?

Dunno, I live just outside State College

On a normal day ? sure, it's a nice drive

Conditions are going to constantly change. If you can leave tomorrow rather than Sat, you will drastically increase your odds of success........

  • As someone who drives down I81 at 5:30 in the morning every day, including tomorrow, I really doubt that the bridge will close.

  • I live in Harrisburg and just evacuated the city. My girlfriend packed all the tailgate stuff. The major bridges are open, but Market St is closed. Traffic has been bad, but not overwhelming. I'm staying in Carlisle tonight to give us three options to get to State College tomorrow.

  • Leaving from Harrisburg, does anyone know if you can take 11/15 north to get above clarksferry Bridge. Is 322 open from newport to State college?

Probably not. It's been closed since at least early this AM. Water started spilling onto the highway through the Dauphin narrows at some point today. 322 westbound just after the Clarks Ferry bridge is under water too and with the Susquehanna yet to crest, I don't see this being an option at any point this weekend.

I think this is the route I'm going to try. I don't really feel like going all the way to the I99 corridor off the turnpike. Hopefully the conditions aren't too bad getting to 322 from this route.

    For now!

I'd recommend heading west to I-99 no matter how you get there. From BWI [NOT Blue White Issustrated but, Baltimore-Washington International Airport] you need to take I-70 to Breezewood, PA then I-76 PA turnpike to Bedford, PA and then I-99 to PSU. Keep in mind that the major flooding is in NE PA and the Southern Tier of NY and that by Friday into Saturday, the Susquehanna and its tributaries in So. Central PA will be reaching their crests. So from this point forward, conditions will only get WORSE. My advice for those SE of State College is to drive west and then hook up with I-99. For you folks NE, maybe by Sat. a.m. roads will be passable by then. Good Luck! Right now, if I am not mistaken, the PA turnpike I-76 westbound is clear from Philly to Harrisburg and is open, but expect conditions to worsen through Friday.

    not-so Cheers!

  • I live in NE PA and driving down I-81 to I-80 shouldn't be a problem now that the upper branches of the Susquehanna are cresting. The water that was covering I-80 near Bloomsburg has receded thus the opening. By Sat, there should be no problems at all taking 80 from East of the Susquehanna.

I'm more inclined to try 34 from Carlisle to hit 322 in Newport. Accd to vslice, 34 was closed today in Sherman's Dale, but it could be good to go for Saturday. 74 is a much longer back road drive over 2 mountains, and if one section is closed...you're pretty far off the beaten path. However, it does look like less of a risk to hit water. We'll play it by ear, but as of right now, there's a 90% chance that Sneaky and I will stay in Carlisle tomorrow night and leave from there Sat morning. If anybody wants to do a convoy from there, let me know. We'll probably try to be on the road early...6ish.

Hmm, thanks tdiddy. I'll have to consider that route now too. If I end up going up that way, I might take you up on the convoy idea.

  • Guys, i'm flying into harrisburg tomorrow around 4:30 PM. i've already tried to change my flight to pittsburgh but no dice. I'm watching all of the road closings and read all of your posts, but these road numbers and mile/exits mean nothing to me. I'm staying in state college, so i'd like to get from harrisburg to sc tomorrow evening.

What are my options? It sounds like the straight shot on 322 is obviously out, although i will have a gps so i can detour around closings if possible. I have no problem heading west to get a clearer path, even if it does turn a 90 minute drive into 3 hours. Do you guys have any recommendations?

I have no fear about gameday, i have a feeling both sets of fans will be there and make it something special.
