Quickly from Thursday's scrimmage...

  • I'll have more later today, but here are some quick, basic notes:

    - It was a pretty intense scrimmage on Thursday, complete with a couple of scraps between players. Someone said it was nice to see a little more fire from some guys. Most of the scraps were between the offensive and defensive line, as usual. As far as the format goes, there was a lot of situational work done - i.e. 3rd downs, red zone, goal line, 1st-and-10s, so it wasn't a typical scrimmage. I know what you're thinking, and yes, the offense did find the end zone a couple of times in the Red Zone.

    - That sigh of relief you hear is on the injury front. From what has been communicated to me so far, I have yet to hear of any injuries occurring in the scrimmage. We'll try to get more on the personnel revolving around the players returning from injuries later today.

    - There are still some experiments going on along the offensive line. That is something that should clear up next week. They're also testing a few guys from the line at tight end. I was told that Nate Cadogan got a look at the position on Thursday. The good news I heard regarding the offensive line was that it was able to get a little bit of a running game going against the first team defense.

    - Bob Flounders reported this morning (maybe last night) that it was possible that D'Anton Lynn could see a move to safety in the near future. I can confirm that has been something that has been talked about, but a move has yet to have been made.

That's all for now, we hope to have some more for you this afternoon.

  • Thanks, Sean. As for intensity, I'm glad to read it was an intense scrimmage but that means nothing until we see it sustained on the field in games. Absolutely no offense meant to you but we've been hearing about intense practices before during this season and preseason but yet the team always appears to play without fire, save one or two guys. Maybe the debacle against Illinois was a wake-up call? I hope so!

You noted the discrepancy well. The proof of the pudding is in the taste. No matter how long it took, how hard they had to whip it in preparation or long it had to sit in the back of the refrigerator the TASTE is all the matters and that is the goal all along.

Sean, you bring us what you hear and that is why we come here. You give us the best down and dirty news I can find. But you can't judge the real desire of the team or the coaching staff, you can only report. Keep it up.

We will see how the pudding tastes next Saturday.

  • Lynn would be a heck of a safety.

  • Not really sure whether I'm happy or not that our O could run against the D. Doesn't seem like much of a feat and really just says that our rush D is worse than most of those that we've played so far - minus Temple, and not getting any better.

  • Came here to post this. Illinois ran wild on our defense, I'm not sure our offense doing it is a very impressive feat.

  • I am definitely glad to hear about the intensity as well. That is how every practice should be, if you ask me. We need to have guys getting ticked off at one another and challenging each other. It's all part of competition and making yourself better.

Definitely good news to hear about injuries and I'm hoping that Fortt and maybe a few others who are banged up will be ready to go and make an impract vs. Minnesota.

That's all fine and dandy regarding our offense getting a running game going on our first team D but to be fair in that judgement, our first team D hasn't tackled too well so far this year and got stomped on vs. Illinois and their running attack.

I'm all for Lynn at safety. That would likely mean that Morris and Powell will get the nod at CB, if that change would happen. Didn't Lynn want to play safety anyway? Considering how many tackles he gets from his CB position, I think he would be a major force at safety for us in racking up tackles and being in on nearly every play. Plus, we know he can cover well.

Thanks for the update, Sean. Look forward to more.

  • The secondary I wanted from day one was Sukay/Lynn at safety, Morris/Powell at CB and Thomas at nickle. That would have been the most athletic secondary PSU had for a long time. Lynn's future in NFL is at safety not CB. Now I would like to see Willis/Lynn at safety, Morris/Powell at CB and Astorino at nickle.

True Dat..haha. Yeah, I think he may be the best safety on the team, even though he's playing corner. He has the size (height and mass), speed and would be a very good coverage safety with his time spent at corner. I still feel, however, that it may not be only the players, but the schemes in which they are coached to play, that still prevents (excuse the pun) us to be more aggressive. My next question is, if this happens and Lynn moves to safety, who takes his corner spot?
Agree with the others too, not sure who the big winner is of this statement, "The good news I heard regarding the offensive line was that it was able to get a little bit of a running game going against the first team defense." That is NOT a good sign from our D front. They should be crushing that O-line. BUT, props to the O-line. Still, not sure if this is good or bad news?!!?

  • Some more from the scrimmage. I must apologize because I missed catching up with one of my contacts this afternoon so I don't have as much as anticipated.

    - Thursday saw more of the same with the running backs, with the top three guys getting roughly the same amount of carries. The guy who drew the best reviews from the day was Silas Redd, who had a long touchdown run estimated at 50 yards during the scrimmage. As was noted earlier, the offense ran the ball better against the Lions' depleted defensive line.

    - There were a number of rotations on the offensive line, many of which are the same as I listed in yesterday's update. A lot of players got reps with both the first and second team units on Thursday, as the coaches continue to try to find the best fit. We'll have a better idea of where that unit stands on Monday. As I mentioned before, Nate Cadogan got a look as a blocking tight end on Thursday. He's the only offensive lineman that I've heard worked out at the position this week.

    - The linebacker spots also saw a number of rotations, and all three 'backers returning from injury - Michael Mauti, Bani Gbadyu and Gerald Hodges - participated in the scrimmage. Sources say next week we'll see a return to more traditional reps, with Mauti and Nate Stupar at the Sam, Chris Colasanti and Glenn Carson in the middle and Khairi Fortt, Gbadyu and Hodges at the Fritz. Looks like Mauti, Colasanti and Fortt will be the likely ones heading into next week. Mike Yancich, who has switched around from the middle to the outside, has fallen off a bit since winning the No. 2 inside job in camp. Freshman Mike Hull and walk-on Jamie Van Fleet have also seen time on the outside.

  • So if Lynn goes to safety I'm guessing Dailey gets moved to the nickel or safety in the nickel formation.

But that would mean our CB's would be Morris and Thomas/Powell ... does that seem idea for us?

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

I'm guessing the nickel package will be:

    CB - Morris
    CB - Powell
    NB - Lynn
    SS - Dailey
    Hero - Astorino

Sorry for the omission. For some reason, I got stuck on having Willis in there for Sukay, but Dailey likely takes his spot.

Also, Thomas is done for the year...maybe more.

I think 42 just forgot him ... I would think Lynn would play safety over any any of our current guys.

Oh ... 42 ... I have also heard the same about Thomas ... not looking good for this year, but hoping he gets back for spring.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.
