Quick hitters -- Sean Stanley

  • A few samplings from a conference call with Penn State's senior DE Wednesday ...

--Stanley has had trouble putting on weight throughout his career but is currently between 245-247 and said the new strength program has helped him been more consistent with maintaining weight.

--Stanley said he and Pete Massaro have been getting first-team reps with Deion Barnes, Kyle Baublitz and C.J. Olaniyan working in at both end spots.

"They're all having really good springs," he said. "Right now it looks like we'll have a good five-man rotation (at end) going into the fall."

--Stanley was tied for second on the squad with 4.5 sacks last season and second among defensive ends with 30 tackles. He's excited about the chance to be a full-time starter and hopes to have a big year.

"I think I can be a much better pass rusher," he said. "I just haven't put it together over a full season. I think I can be a double-digit sack guy."

--Adam Gress, who has spent a lot of time this spring going one-on-one with Stanley, praised him for his spin move earlier in the day. Like many guys who have been in Larry Johnson's system for a few years, Stanley is working to diversify his pass-rush arsenal for his final season.

"I would say I feel confident with three (moves). I've been working on the spin a lot this spring. I've had some success and failures with it. I would hope to have at least three or four good moves and then some counters going into the fall."

--Stanley was asked about chasing down the quarterbacks and said each evades the rush in his own way (Jones is the fastest, McGloin steps up in the pocket the best and Bolden is "elusive"). Besides Silas Redd, he's been impressed with Bill Belton as far as running backs are concerned.

"He's real elusive, quick," Stanley said. "He's been able to run through tackles and outside."

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

  • Yeah Bolden is about as "elusive" as the Statue of Liberty haha

  • 245 lbs still seems light for a DE.. Fortt just checked in at 244 lbs, we might as well put him as a rush LB for some 3rd downs..

I'm not sure if it's all the practice they had doing it last year or direct orders from the new coaches (probably some combination), but I've been kind of impressed/amazed at the way Penn State's players (both offensive and defensive guys) have been careful to give all three quarterbacks equal praise. If they say something good about any one of the three, they're very quick to make sure they say something good about both of the other two.

By "elusive" (RE: Bolden), I think Stanley meant Bolden plays "reverse psychology" with the pass rushers. They see where he is, and they would expect him to move (slide, or run) -- But BOOM! Robo is actually TWO steps ahead -- He's fooling them, by staying where he is. Genius!

    Maybin was in even lighter.

  • Really hoping that Stanley can put it together this year...if not he better watch out of Deion Barnes!

245 might be light but it helps for rushing the passer. Look at the Colts for example. Freeney and Mathis were "undersized" but it worked for years with Peyton giving that defense a lead so the other team had to pass and the ends could rush the passer. But suddenly last year without the lead they were vastly undersized and ineffective.

If you assume that Penn State will be leading is many game so that other teams need to pass a lot, Stanley will be fine at 245. In the games in which teams will be focussing on the running game against our front 4, Stanley might need to split more time with some of the bigger ends in order to keep opposing offenses honest.

See also Aaron Maybin as evidence that you can be light and still be effective.

  • I really think Barnes has a breakout season this year.

  • I hope Barnes breaks out too, but I have a lot of faith in Stanley AND Massaro. I hope Barnes shows flashes and gives us great depth off the bench and can step in as a RS Soph as a starter after Stanley leaves. But I have high hope for our starters as well.

  • Keep in mind that while the coaches wouldn't mind seeing him a little heavier (Larry Johnson wanted Stanley at about 255 last year; not sure yet if the new defense has changed that), Stanley is only 6-1. If he's playing at 260 he might be a bit better against the run but won't have the kind of explosion he needs to rush the passer.

Yeah, its pretty good. But I do think he can get like 5-7 more lbs and be just fine. If he keeps up the hard work during the summer, he will be around 250-252... And believe it or not, that will help him with his pass rush and stopping the run. As long as he doesnt get too bulky, he will be fine. I expect him to keep pushing it and put on that last 5 lbs. Good kid. Love the update Jeff.

Yes, reminds me of when my 5 year old draws a picture and asks me what I think, first question is to confirm what the picture is, then to say how wonderful it is, at which point the 3 year old draws a few lines and asks the same question and I praise both for how wonderful they are as artists. This is the current QB situation at PSU, if one of them can accomplish the equivalent of drawing something half legible, all deserve praise, "Oh Robby boy, what a great job on that screen pass, Silas could almost keep his stride on that one and didn't have to reach very far, oh and Pauly and Matty, you both throw wonderful screen passes too, you're all such fantastic screen passers, how lucky we are to have three such talented quarterbacks.
