Quick hitters -- Jordan Hill

  • Just got off of back-to-back Big Ten teleconferences with DT Jordan Hill and HC Bill O'Brien, about 10 minutes each. I'll have a story on O'Brien a little later but wanted to share a few tidbits from the Hill call.

--Hill wants to play with Jared Odrick's "motor" this season. "I want to get to the pace he played at. He played 70, 75 plays a game and played them all at full speed." He wants to get to the point where he's not tired during any part of the game.

--Asked about the young defensive linemen that have stepped up this spring, the first three names he mentioned were DaQuan Jones, Deion Barnes and Kyle Baublitz.

--On Michael Mauti: "He probably has the most energy out of all the defensive players and he's not even playing. He's definitely ready to get back out there … from my perspective, he's right there (physically)."

--Hill was "ecstatic" when he found out Larry Johnson was being retained as DL coach but that didn't factor into his decision to return for his senior year; he had already decided to return prior to that.

  • Honestly, the quick hitters are better than the full articles some times. I read the full ones when I get a chance but the quick hitters can be consumed in between projects for me and I get the information a lot faster. Keep up the great work on all ends!

  • P.S. I wasn't sure when I signed up for a free VIP trial run if I'd keep the 247 subscription, but ended up keeping it anyway. Now with the addition of Jeff and his contributions, Sean having his finger on the pulse of everything including recruiting, and Andrew's unrivaled coverage of the basketball team (something missing on all of the other competitors' sites), I might never leave.

I can't imagine the DE's NOT surpassing the play of last years' DE's. Lattimore and Crawford played hard and were physical specimens, but we have so many intriguing prospects that a couple of them are bound to blossom into very good players. I can't wait to watch Baublitz against the run and CJO/Barnes rush the passer.

  • Really need Barnes and Baublitz to step up. I'm really excited to see Barnes getting upfield. We haven't had a strong pass rusher on the edge since ... Maybin ? Heck, I wouldn't even be surprised to see Stanley and Massaro bring some quality pass rush, but Barnes seems to have the speed to get around the edge and cause chaos.

I think Stanley has definitely shown flashes off the edge and I'm looking for him to put it all together this year.

If Massaro's knees are okay, he is the best DE we have at generating a pass rush. I'm hoping that Barnes can be even better.

^^^^ love that. Cause I was already happy Massarro was coming back. Stanley always leaves me wanting more... he'd be close then not finish all the time. Just a step slow... just a step or 2 out of position.... just everything.

Either hope Massarro and Stanley have returned healthy / made strides or let Barnes / Baublitz take over.

I really think Massaro is primed to have a huge year.
