Quick Saturday scrimmage update

  • The Nittany Lions had their third scrimmage of the preseason today. Here is a short summary of what went down, we hope to have some more info tomorrow.

    - Three quarterbacks - Matt McGloin, Robert Bolden and Kevin Newsome all got time with the first team on Saturday. Kevin Newsome got the first look from what we've been told, and he had a nice run of about 30 yards. Was told that Robert Bolden had another good scrimmage.

    - Derek Moye turned in the biggest play of the day, catching a fade pattern from Matt McGloin that ended up going for about 80 yards and a touchdown after he got behind the defense.

The first team line was Quinn Barham at left tackle DeOn'Tae Pannell at left guard, Doug Klopacz at center, Stefen Wisniewski at right guard and Lou Eliades at right tackle. Onlookers say that they had a better scrimmage than they did on Tuesday, although Joe Paterno did lay into Wisniewski for a few mental mistakes.

    - At running back, Curtis Dukes had a good day, according to onlookers. He had some strong runs during the scrimmage, including one in which he trucked starting linebacker Bani Gbadyu on the play. He 'ran hard' on the day.

    - Starting tight end Andrew Szczerba is still out of action. Garry Gilliam is taking first team snaps in his place. He is currently working on improving his blocking but 'he's been doing pretty well.'

    - The linebackers were Chris Colasanti, Bani Gbadyu and Nathan Stupar.started out as the first team linebacker unit. Michael Mauti and Gerald Hodges worked in with the first time as the scrimmage progressed. Was told that Chris Colasanti looks good at middle linebacker right now.

    - Safety Drew Astorino played in the scrimmage. He was back with the first team after coming off of his minor shoulder injury.

Colasanti always looked the part... glad he is stepping up. He could be a monster at MLB.

Any word on an injury to Silas Redd? Read that he may have a sprained MCL?!?

  • Funny...it is being reported elsewhere that there were no big plays for the offense today.

  • Yea and 80 yard TD is just run of the mill for this offense no biggie :)

  • I'm starting to really be concerned with Szczerba. This injury seems to not be going away. It's getting to the point where I don't think he will be starting in game one.

  • Thanks for the update, I love all the PSU coverage we get these days....much more than the days of just BWI and Playbook.

    Hmm...

Was told about the play by a couple of people, 80-yards was the shorter of the two estimations. Moye apparently burnt the corner (not sure who it was) on a double move and he was off to the races.

  • Yes - your report has been corroborated elsewhere. Another source reported there weren't any big plays.

  • I'm also on the list of "very concerned" people about Szczerba. I have a good friend who knows Andy very well, but hasn't spoken to him in a month or two. Last I spoke with him, he said Andy claimed it was minor, but I don't think there is any such thing with back issues. I will do a little digging to see if he's heard anything else.

  • On the new call in show the other night Jack Ham all but anointed Gilliam the starter at TE. Szczerba is missing to many reps and he has to be falling too far behind, and that back injury has to more then is being let on IMHO

    psuskeet

  • Mauti wasn't starting with the first team? I thought he was "the man" at linebacker this year? Were they maybe just giving him a rest and getting Stupar (who I think is also very good, so not losing much) a starting run. I guess as long as Gilliam is progressing,TE will be okay, its not like in Szczerba we're missing our 3 year starter. Good to hear the O-line getting better. Just wish the 80 yard TD had come from Bolden.

  • Hey guys, I just read through my report and feel I owe you an apology for some careless grammatical/typographical mistakes. I was flipping back between this and something else and my mind was moving faster than my hands... I'm really sorry about that. Shoddy work like that is something that you should not expect from Lions247 and for that I apologize.

  • My main concern about Szczerba is he's arguably your best edge blocker (or potential edge blocker) or the entire team. Yes, on the entire team. He's 6'6", close to 270, and a monster run blocker. I know several of us have discussed elsewhere the belief that Szczerba's best ceiling exists at LT, which was where many projected him to end up coming out of High School. With Barham, in my mind, being a question mark at LT...I think Szczerba's support on that side in the run game is huge.

Again, not getting into numbers too much...but relying on Gilliam in strongside run support after barely pumping out 6 reps at 225 at LFL makes me very concerned. Gilliam's far more gifted in a role like Quarless IMO...while Szczerba is a prototypical strongside blocking TE who we would miss very much if not available.

Still needs a bit of editing. ;)

  • Hey Sean - nice Board you have here.

Questions: do you get a sense that Andrew S. might miss through the Bama game? If so, do you feel that Gilliam can handle the bulk of snaps from a blocking standpoint, and can Haplea or Wedderburn handle any snaps from a bloking standpoint yet?

    splorka

  • Sporka, I answered this in another inquiry, here is what I said:

I get the sense that things could be more serious than they really are. He missed time in the spring, including the Blue-White game, and a back injury is something that doesn't go away as easily as a knee or an ankle. I don't think he'll miss that much time, as far as the Bama game goes, but it's definitely a concern. We keep hearing it's minor, but if that were the case he wouldn't have missed the first two weeks of camp in my opinion.

Gilliam's blocking is a work in progress, I don't think the staff thought that they would have to rely on him as a blocker this early in his career. If it would get to the point where he is the No. 1 guy by the time Bama rolls around, I would consider that to be a concern. He'll get there, but I don't think he's ready for one of the top defenses in the nation.

It would be nice if they could throw a lineman out there with the tight ends for blocking situations. I think they did that with Mike Lucian a few years ago but I could be wrong there. If Gilliam is the guy, I would expect to see a lot of Brett Brackett right there with him to help block as well.

  • That actually sounds like a good idea...possibly of course. Throw out Pannell to help Barham with Dareus on the left side. Especially if AS isn't ready by that time.

  • I remember the Wisconsin at PSU game several years ago. Tamba Hali ate the right tackle alive in the first half. I think it was a true freshman who clearly was NOT ready to block a quality DE. Wisconsin did not make an adjustment until the 2nd half when they had an extra blocker available on Hali EVERY play.

I've been thinking that for a while too. I'm really worried about Sczerba, especially with his size he seems like he will be a great asset for the Oline/blocking.

I thought Coasanti was going to be the next big thing at LB for PSU when he was recruited. I was a big fan. I'm glad he seems to finally be putting it all together.
